  • Electrical property of polymeric insulating plays a key role in the trend of making power apparatus high voltage, and reliability and safety of apparatus in the long term depend on it. There is a recent trend of applying polymeric material to insulating material for outdoor, and particularly it is expected that it may be used partly as a pin insulator. Using as an alternate of insulating material for outdoor, however, it has still many problems to be solved in the field of material such as resistances of environment and tracking. It has been given attention to that the silicon rubbers and the epoxy have recently been used. but the the reliability in the viewpoint of material property becomes an issue. The polymeric materials such as EPDM, Epoxy and PVC have also been used as an insulating materials for outdoor. In this point of view, we studied each tracking phenomenon with test material such as rubber for pin, PVC for powercable used as an insulating material for outdoor, and Epoxy etc. The characteristics of anti tracking shows EPDM>Epoxy>PVC in order in the results. We also know that there is an close relationship between properties of tracking and thermegravimetry.

  • Recently polymeric insulators and arresters are being used for outdoor high voltage applications. Polymeric insulators for transmission line have significant advantages over porcelain and glass insulators, especially for ultra-high voltage(UHV) transmission lines. Their advantages are light weight, vandalism resistance and hydrophobicity. Polymeric insulator kind are a relatively new technology, but their expected life is still unknown. In this paper, the material property for polymeric insulating material such as silicone rubber and EPBM is investigated by cross-link time and the relation between tracking resistance and W resistance is analyzed by IEC 60587 and W aging experiment.

  • This paper studies on the tracking phenamena by the IEC recommended method with various polymeric insulating materials which are used in industrial fields. Under the same experimental condition, according to the materials it is observed that there are the type of tracking breakdown and the type of tracking erosion. In the tracking breakdown type materials, the tracking breakdown is occurred at a small number of drops increasing of test voltage and solution density. In the tracking erosion type materials, the erosion depth is saturated or proportioned as increasing of test voltage and solution density.

  • In this paper, the effect of surface tension, wettability, flow rate of contaminants with varying surfactant content and frequency of applied voltage on the tracking breakdown of epoxy insulating materials were investigated. As the flow rate of contaminant is increased, the surface resistivity is decreased, and the leakage current is increased, the time to tracking breakdown is decreased. It is found that time to tracking breakdown depends on the surface tension of contaminant, that is difference of wettability And as the frequency of applied voltage is increased, time to tracking breakdown decreased.

  • In this paper, we have investigated the degradation of shed materials of outdoor insulators by UV-radiation by using corona-charging and XPS analysis. The accumulated charges on polymeric surface having intrinsic hydrophobic property have a negative impact on retaining its hydrophobicity. Therefore, shorter decay times of surface charges are preferred. The surface voltage decay on UV-treated silicone rubber and EPDM show a different decay trend with UV treated time. From the XPS analysis, the oxidized groups of silica-like structure in silicone rubber increase with UV treatment time. For EPDM, the oxidized carbon groups of C=O, O=C-O increase as elapse of UV radiation time. These oxidized surface for each material have different electrostatic characteristics, so deposited charges may be expected to have different impacts on their surface hydrophobicity. The degradation mechanism based on our results is discussed.

  • This paper describes the performance of the widely used polymeric insulating material for outdoor insulation. Various methods to describe the surface aging of polymer materials such as the peak and average of the leakage current, the cumulative charge, the weight loss have been investigated. The relationship between surface current, time are plotted and discussed.

  • Increased signal speed can be obtained in three ways: changing the layout and/or the ratio of the width to thickness of the metal lines, decreasing the specific resistance of the interconnect metal, and decreasing the dielectric constant of the insulating material (intermetal dielectric). Further advancement cannot be expected from changing layout or decreasing specific resistance. The only alternative is to use an insulating material with a lower dielectric constant than other ones used presently. A large variety of polymers has been proposed for use as materials with low dielectric constants for applications in microelectronics. In this review, the properties of selected polymers as well as various fabrication methods for polymer thin films are discussed. Based on the properties described so far, and the requirements for applications as intermetal dielectric material, the possibilities for further developments also are discussed.

  • This paper introduces the findings of a detailed study on breakdown voltage strength under DC voltage and the development of HVDC cable. Recently, Nano-fillers are attracting attentions of many researchers and engineers, since they seem to bring higher potentials for advancement of electrical insulating properties as nano-composites. Additives and fillers are often adopted to polymeric materials for improving insulating and machanical properties. We have improved the polymer composition and developed a new insulation material for HVDC cable. Each specimen blended at LDPE1 to antioxidant, LDPE2 to antioxidant, pure XLPE was manufactured respectively. The insulation performances of the proposed insulator were compared with specimens blended at nano powders. DC breakdown strength of LDPE1 specimen at 90[$^{\circ}C$] was higher than other specimens. The experimental results show that polar groups intorduced in moleculars chains of blended specimen plays an important role in enhancement of thermal conductivity.

  • This paper presents the effects of accumulation of surface charges on hydrophobic level and the changes of surface potential decay with various artificial environment treatments on high temperature vulcanized (HTV) silicone rubber used for outdoor insulating material. For this study, the charging apparatus by corona discharge, in which grid electrode was installed between the main corona and ground electrode, was used. From this study, it was found that the accumulation of surface charges above a critical surface potential on silicone insulating materials could lead to the temporary loss of surface hydrophobicity. In addition, corona stress and water absorption stress increase the decay rate of surface charges of HTV silicone rubber, while ultraviolet (UV) stress causes longer decay time. We could conclude that the effects of surface charges on hydrophobicity level and the changes of surface state by various artificial treatments were found through a trend of surface potential decay.
