  • The three-phase four-wire shunt active power filter (APF) is an effective method to solve the harmonic problem in three-phase four-wire power systems. In addition, it has two possible topologies, a four-leg inverter and a three-leg inverter with a split-capacitor. There are some studies investigating DC-link voltage control in three-phase four-wire APFs. However, when compared to the four-leg inverter topology, maintaining the balance between the DC-link upper and lower capacitor voltages becomes a unique problem in the three-leg inverter with a split-capacitor topology, and previous studies seldom pay attention to this fact. In this paper, the influence of the balance between the two DC-link voltages on the compensation performance, and the influence of the voltage balance controller on the compensation performance, are analyzed. To achieve the balance between the two DC-link capacitor voltages, and to avoid the adverse effect the voltage balance controller has on the APF compensation performance, a new DC-link voltage balance control strategy for the three-phase four-wire split-capacitor APF is proposed. Representative simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the analysis and the proposed DC-link voltage balance control strategy.

  • With the trend of technological advances in electronic communications and the advent of ubiquitous environments, the density of existing electronic equipment in the surroundings is increasing significantly. It is hence great importance to study the numerically efficient and fast algorithm for complex and large environments to identify their electromagnetic compatibility and interference characteristics of equipments installed in those structure. This paper introduces a statistical-based power balance method(PWB) for the analysis of these problems and considers its practical utility. The 2-dimensional lossy rectangular cavity was numerically revisited to clarify its relationship with the classical deterministic analysis solutions based on the Maxwell's equation. It can be shown that the statistical assumptions and analysis results from the power balance method correspond to the volume average over the realistic deterministic domain. This statistical power balance approach should be a sufficiently practical alternative to the electromagnetic problem of complex and large environment since it is apparent that the full-wave analysis methods have some severe limits of its computational burdens under the situation of complex and large environment.

  • This paper discusses power balance control of photovoltaic/wind/diesel hybrid generation system for remote area power supplies. There are many control methods for hybrid power system. Among others, it must be adopted that the control method to guarantee a stable balance between supply and demand, regardless of the fluctuation of generator power by atmospheric changes. In this paper, it Is proposed that a hybrid generation system has a power-balanced controller to equilibrate generation power with a load demand, which is composed of DC bus-type power systems. To execute power balance control, it is assumed that all of power generators have a equivalent current-source characteristics. Through the results of simulation, the proposed scheme was verified.

  • This paper presents a method for the digital control of a high power factor AC/DC converter employing the power balance control technique to achieve a fast response of the output voltage control. To avoid the effects of an output voltage ripple in the voltage control loop, the average output voltage is sampled and used as a feedback signal for the output voltage controller. The proposed control technique was verified by simulations using MATLAB/Simulink and its implementation was realized by a dsPIC30F4011 digital signal processor to control a CUK topology AC/DC converter with a 48V output voltage and a 250 W output power. The experimental results agree with the simulation results. The proposed control technique achieves a fast transient response with a lower line current distortion than is achieved when using a conventional proportional-integral controller and the power balance control technique with the conventional sampling method.

  • This paper proposes a validation model using a reverberation chamber for verification of the effectiveness and accuracy of the statistical power balance (PWB) method. The PWB method treats electromagnetic (EM) field distributions in certain environments as a representative value of an "ensemble" average, so a reverberation chamber is utilized as a testing apparatus to experimentally simulate the sets of measurement field "ensemble" inside a complex environment. Measurements are performed with various test conditions for environmental loss using flat absorbers, and front and side doors of the chamber. Comparison between the PWB analysis and the measurement results shows good agreement, indicating the usefulness of this statistical analysis method for stating the electromagnetic field inside the EM zone as a representative value to general structures.

  • This paper presents a new practical method for optimal active and reactive power control for the economic operation in electrical power system, and the programs are developed for digital computer solution. The major features and techniques of this paper are as follows: 1) The method is presented for finding the equivalent active power balance equation applying the sparse Jacobian matrix of power flow equation instead of using B constant as active power balance equation considering transmission loss, and thus for determining directly optimal active power allocation berween generator unitw satisfying the equality and inequality constraints. 2) The method is proposed for solving directly the optimum economim dispatch problem without using gradient method and penalty function for both active and reactive power control. As a result, the computing time are reduced and convergence characteristic is remarkably improved. 3) Unlike most of conventional methods which adopt the transmission loss as a objective function for reactive power control, the total fuel cost of themal power plant is adopted as objective function for both active and reactive power control. consequently, more reasonable and economic profit can be achieved.

  • This paper analyzes the accuracy of the methods used in calibrating the thermal power of Nigeria Research Reactor-1 (NIRR-1), a low-power miniature neutron source reactor located at the Centre for Energy Research and Training, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria. The calibration was performed at three different power levels: low power (3.6 kW), half power (15 kW), and full power (30 kW). Two methods were used in the calibration, namely, slope and heat balance methods. The thermal power obtained by the heat balance method at low power, half power, and full power was $3.7{\pm}0.2kW$, $15.2{\pm}1.2kW$, and $30.7{\pm}2.5kW$, respectively. The thermal power obtained by the slope method at half power and full power was $15.8{\pm}0.7kW$ and $30.2{\pm}1.5kW$, respectively. It was observed that the slope method is more accurate with deviations of 4% and 5% for calibrations at half and full power, respectively, although the linear fit (slope method) on average temperature-rising rates during the thermal power calibration procedure at low power (3.6 kW) is not fitting. As such, the slope method of power calibration is not suitable at lower power for NIRR-1.

  • The electrical power system (EPS) of Korean satellites in low-earth-orbit is designed to achieve energy balance based on a one-orbit mission scenario. This means that the battery has to be fully charged at the end of a one-orbit mission. To provide the maximum solar array (SA) power generation, the peak power tracking (PPT) method has been developed for a spacecraft power system. The PPT is operated by a software algorithm, which tracks the peak power of the SA and ensures the battery is fully charged in one orbit. The EPS should be designed to avoid the stress of electronics in order to handle the main bus power from the SA power. This paper summarizes the results of energy balance to achieve optimal power sizing and the actual trend analysis of EPS performance in orbit. It describes the results of required power for the satellite operation in the worst power conditions at the end-of-life, the methods and input data used in the energy balance, and the case study of energy balance analyses for the normal operation in orbit. Both 10:35 AM and 10:50 AM crossing times are considered, so the power performance in each case is analyzed with the satellite roll maneuver according to the payload operation concept. In addition, the data transmission to the Korea Ground Station during eclipse is investigated at the local-time-ascending-node of 11:00 AM to assess the greatest battery depth-of-discharge in normal operation.

  • The purpose of this study is to determine the most appropriate experimental method of the measurement of "damping loss factors" (DLF) for the statistical energy analysis(SEA) calculation. The successful prediction of vibration levels from the structure is critically dependent on the accurate estimation of DLF's not only in conventional vibration analysis but especially in SEA. Unforunately, calculation of accurate DLF is not an easy matter. So experimental methods are made use of for the DLF values. Three kinds of experimental methods for estimating DLF, i.e. decay rate method, half-power bandwidth method and power balance method, are presented and tests are carried out for the plate and the cylindrical shell examples. Pro and con of each methods is reviewed. Finally, calculated DLF values are used for vibration level estimation using commercial SEA software and compared with measured vibration data.tion data.
