  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to validate the design criteria of the concrete modular road system, which is a new semi-bridge-type concept road, through a comparison of numerical analysis results and actual loading test results under static axial loads. METHODS : To design the semi-bridge-type modular road, both the bridge design code and the concrete structural design code were adopted. The standard truck load (KL-510) was applied as the major traffic vehicle for the design loading condition. The dimension of the modular slab was designed in consideration of self-weight, axial load, environmental load, and combined loads, with ultimate limit state coefficients. The ANSYS APDL (2010) program was used for case studies of center and edge loading, and the analysis results were compared with the actual mock-up test results. RESULTS : A full-scale mock-up test was successfully conducted. The maximum longitudinal steel strains were measured as about 35 and 83.5 micro-strain (within elastic range) at center and edge loading locations, respectively, under a 100 kN dual-wheel loading condition by accelerating pavement tester. CONCLUSIONS : Based on the results of the comparison between the numerical analysis and the full-scale test, the maximum converted stress range at the edge location is 32~51% of the required standard flexural strength under the two times over-weight loading condition. In the case of edge loading, the maximum converted stresses from the Westergaard equation, the ANSYS APDL analysis, and the mock-up test are 1.95, 1.7, and 2.3 times of that of the center loading case, respectively. The primary reason for this difference is related to the assumption of the boundary conditions of the vertical connection between the slab module and the crossbeam module. Even though more research is required to fully define the boundary conditions, the proposed design criteria for the concrete modular road finally seems to be reasonable.

  • The TEC-Beam system is a composite beam consisting of structural tee, precast concrete, and cast-in-site reinforced concrete slab. The preliminary test of the proposed system was performed for simple beams, showing good behavior. However, for the field application of the system. TEC-Beam - RC column connection was required to produce a mechanism that transfers the force occurring in the lower part of the TEC-Beam. Thus, this study developed a connection mechanism that transfers the force occurring in the lower part of the TEC-Beam. Thus, this study developed a connection wherein the section of the TEC-Beam was enlarged and the lower part reinforced. Two setups of the proposed system were experimentally investigated. using the anchorage length of reinforcement., i.e., length of the increased section, as test parameter. It could be concluded from the result that the proposed system shows good structural behavior, with potential applicability in the field.

  • In this study, a monotonic loading test to estimate structural capacity of 12 meter long full scale precast pre-stressed concrete beam specimen was performed with a 2,000 kN dynamic actuator. A couple of embedded steel plate was installed at the ends of the beam and specimens were connected to steel girder frame with high tension bolts. Nominal compressive strength of pre-stressed concrete beam and slab were 50 MPa and 24 MPa respectively. Two HD25 tensile steel reinforcements were welded on vertical plate of embedded steel plate. Pre-stressed concrete beam specimen was loaded by displacement control method with a certain loading pattern which was repeated loading and unloading with 10mm increment displacement. About 88.34%, 86.97% and 66.83% of displacement restoration ratios were evaluated at elastic, inelastic and plastic behavior region of specimen respectively.

  • The prediction of driving stresses in piles is necessary for optimum selection of driving hammers, better design of precast piles, enact assessment of drivabilities and complete description of piling specifications. However, the existing pile-driving formulas based on the theory of Newtonian impact have some defects and shortcomings; the numerical method by the wave equation analysis using electronic computer usually Involves various uncertainties and limitations which can yield erroneous outcomes because it employs soil constants of which the nature is unknown as essential parameters and ignores the effect of residual stresses set up in the pile .after each hammer blow; and the electronic measuring technique needs extra time and expense. The method developed herein is presented for the purpose of giving field engineers a reliable and convenient analytical procedure for the prediction of driving stresses along the full length of pile using the most effetive parameters without resort to electronic computer. This method is based on the fundamental mechanics of stress waves in elastic rods and takes into account the effect of residual stresses induced by reversed friction in piles.

  • It was applied the grouting method to fill densely the space between the bottom of the caisson and the ground with the grout mixture mixed with anti-washout admixture after locating accurately the precast caisson on three concrete landing pads but it is far different from a costly conventional method, which place concrete to build the foundation of reinforcement concrete on the spot after excavating inside of the temporary coffering wall for the bridge foundation in the sea. To verify the grouting method in advance, the full-scale trial test was performed twice on the land. After confirming the fluidity of material for the injection and some possible problems during construction and then enhancing the original design, the main process is ongoing and it has been finished 12 spots until now. The purpose of this study is to introduces for the first time in Korea the grouting method including the automatic and the manual monitoring process applied to, based on the main process of the caisson foundation finished already in the site. In a similar construction it is sincerely expected to be referred to in the future.

  • This paper presented an structural efficiency of steel coupling beam jointed single plate shear connections with seat and top angle. Parameters for the test specimens were are seat and top angle, reinforcing of concrete, embedded length, section loss. Steel coupling beam with angle showed excellent strength, stiffness, energy dissipation capacity. The specimen with no reinforcement around the embedded steel plate showed slightly low deformation capacity because of early failure in the precast concrete walls. However, the specimen with reinforcement around the embedded steel plate showed good deformation capacity. Deformation capacity was not decrease despite short embedded length. The specimen with section loss showed excellent deformation capacity. Because shear strength of steel coupling beam was lesser than of connections. These results showed that for workability and cost efficiency, the proposed system is promising for one of steel coupling beam.

  • A modified FRP-concrete composite deck applicable to cable stayed bridge with long girder-to-girder span is proposed, and its design and economical efficiency are presented. The existing FRP-concrete composite deck has low section stiffness due to adoption of GFRP panel with low elastic modulus, which arrives at difficulty in meet of serviceability limit such as deck deflection. So a new-type FRP-concrete composite deck, named precast FRP-concrete deck, is developed by extensioning concrete at the both ends of FRP-concrete composite deck, which brings the effect of reduction of net span length of deck. Compared to the existing FRP-concrete composite deck this modified deck has the advantage of increasing span length but slightly increases self weight. For this type of deck the section optimization is carried out for the cases of simply supported on girder and composite to girder. The optimized deck was applied to cable stayed bridge with a center span length of 540m, and as a result it is verified that PFC deck can be applied efficiently to cable stayed bridge due to reduction of quantity of upper structure.

  • As piling works in urban area are increasing, SIP which has low noise & vibration piling method takes the place of driven pile which has good bearing charateristics and is economical. Although SIP has been used far more than 15 years and it's use is increasing year by year, accurate analysis of bearing mechanism of SIP is not enough. So the design of SIP is much more conservative than driven pile. This paper is aimed at analysing the bearing charateristics of 103 SIPs constructed in Korea to give rational design criteria. Research result shows that bearing capacity of SIP is 40% lower than that of driven pile and conservative Meyerhof(20$\bar{N}_b'A_b$) method produced closer result to load test results than any other design method. And this result shows that in order to use optimised design criteria for the economical SIP design, quality control criteria must be settled down to produce high bearing capacity.

  • Dynamic and static load tests are conducted in four construction sites by using steel pipe piles(SPP) and concrete piles to compare differences of load bearing mechanism. Steel pipe piles are instrumented with electric strain gages and are subject to dynamic load tests during driving. The damage of strain gages attached is checked simultaneously. Static load test is also conducted on the same piles after two to seven days' elapse. Then load-settlement behavior and shaft and/or tip resistances are measured. As a result, the allowable bearing capacity calculated by the Davisson's offset method of CAPWAP analysis shows 2~33% larger than that of static load test. The average value of allowable bearing capacity of static load test is closer to the allowable capacity obtained at the safety factor of 2.5 applied on ultimate bearing capacity than to the one obtained from the Davisson's offset method. The analysis of strain gage readings shows that unit skin friction increases with depth. Furthermore, the friction mobilized around the 1~2m above the pile tip considerably contributes to the total shaft resistance.
