  • Recently, alternative and novel energy resources have been developed for use in the future because of the current environmental problems and exhaustion of fossil energy resources. Hydrogen energy has many merits, such as its environmental friendliness, easy storage, and easy production, but it also has disadvantages, in that it is highly combustible and explosive. In this study, a test procedure using a simple SP test under highly pressurized hydrogen gas conditions was established. In order to evaluate its applicability, SP tests were carried out using a stainless steel (SUS316L) sample under atmospheric, pressurized helium, and pressurized hydrogen gas conditions. The results under the pressurized hydrogen gas condition showed fissuring and produced a reduction of the elongation in the plastic instability region due to hydrogen embrittlement, showing the effectiveness of the current in-situ SP test.

  • When using hydrogen gas as an ecofriendly energy sources, it is necessary to conduct a safety assessment and ensure thereliability of the hydrogen pressure vessel against hydrogen embrittlement expected in the steel materials. In this study, by applying the in-situ SP test method, the gas hydrogen embrittlement behaviors in SA372 steel, which is commonly used as a pressurized hydrogen gas storage container, were evaluated. To investigate the hydrogen embrittlement behavior, SP tests at different punch velocities were conducted for specimens with differently fabricated surfaces at atmospheric pressure and under high-pressure hydrogen gas conditions. As a result, the SA372 steel showed significant hydrogen embrittlement under pressurized hydrogen gas conditions. The effect of punch velocity on the hydrogen embrittlement appeared clearly; the lower punch velocity case indicated significant hydrogen embrittlement resulting in lower SP energy. The fractographic morphologies observed after SP test also revealed the hydrogen embrittlement behavior corresponding to the punch velocity adopted. Under this pressurized gas hydrogen test condition, the influence of specimen surface condition on the extent of hydrogen embrittlement could not be determined clearly.

  • Effects of temperature, pressure, and gas residence time on methane combustion characteristics of mass produced oxygen carrier particle (OCN706-1100) were investigated in a pressurized fluidized bed reactor using methane and air as reactants for reduction and oxidation, respectively. The oxygen carrier showed high fuel conversion, high $CO_2$ selectivity, and low CO concentration at reduction condition and very low NO emission at oxidation condition. Moreover OCN706-1100 particle showed good regeneration ability during successive reduction-oxidation cyclic tests up to the 10th cycle. Fuel conversion and $CO_2$ selectivity decreased and CO emission increased as temperature increased. These results can be explained by trend of calculated equilibrium CO concentration. However, $CO_2$ selectivity increased as pressure increased and fuel conversion increased as gas residence time increased.

  • To check effects of operating variables on reaction characteristics of WGS catalyst for SEWGS process, water gas shift reaction tests were carried out in a pressurized fluidized bed reactor using commercial WGS catalyst and sand(as a substitute for $CO_2$ absorbent) as bed materials. Simulated syngas(mixed with $N_2$) was used as a reactant gas. Operating temperature was $210^{\circ}C$ and operating pressure was 20 bar. WGS catalyst content, steam/CO ratio, gas velocity, and syngas concentration were considered as experimental variables. CO conversion increased as the catalyst content and steam/CO ratio increased. CO conversion at fluidized bed condition was higher than that of fixed bed condition. However, CO conversion were maintained almost same value within the fluidized bed condition. CO conversion decreased as the syngas concentration increased. The optimum operation condition was confirmed and long time water gas shift reaction test up to 24 hours at the optimum operating conditions was carried out.

  • Greenhouse gas emissions have a profound effect on global warming. Various environmental regulations have been introduced to reduce the emissions. The largest amount of greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide, is produced in the steel industry. To decrease carbon dioxide emission, hydrogen-based iron oxide reduction, which can replace carbon-based reduction has received a great attention. Iron production generates various by-product gases, such as cokes oven gas (COG), blast furnace gas (BFG), and Linz-Donawitz gas (LDG). In particular, COG, due to its high concentrations of hydrogen and methane, can be reformed to become a major source of hydrogen for reducing iron oxide. Nevertheless, continuous COG cannot be supplied under actual operation condition of steel industry. To solve this problem, this study proposed to use two alternative COG-based fuel mixtures; one with natural gas and the other with biogas. Reforming study on two types of mixed gas were carried out to evaluate catalyst performance under a variety of operating conditions. In addition, methane conversion and product composition were investigated both theoretically and experimentally.

  • Hydrogen has been recognized of the energy source for the future, in terms of the most environmentally acceptable energy source. A pressurized fluidized bed reactor made of carbon steel with 0.076 m I.D. and 1.0 m in height was employed for the thermocatalytic decomposition of methane to produce amount of $CO_2$ - free hydrogen with validity from a commercial point of view. The fluidized bed was proposed for withdrawing of product carbons from the reactor continuously. The methane decomposition rate with the carbon black N330 catalyst was rapidly reached a quasi-steady state and remained for several hour. The methane thermocatalytic decomposition reaction was carried out at the temperature range of 850 - 950 $^{\circ}C$, methane gas velocity of 2.0 $U_{mf}$ and the operating pressure of 1.0 -3.0 bar. Effect of operating parameters such as reaction temperature, pressure on the reaction rates was investigated and predicted the effect of a change in conditions on a chemical equilibrium thermodynamically, according to Le Chatelier's principle.

  • Sulfur-Iodine (SI) cycle, which thermochemically splits water to hydrogen and oxygen through three stages of Bunsen reaction, HI decomposition, and $H_2SO_4$ decomposition, seems a promising process to produce hydrogen massively. Among them, the decomposition of $H_2SO_4$ ($H_2SO_4=H_2O+SO_2+1/2O_2$) requires high temperature heat over $800^{\circ}C$ such as the heat from concentrated solar energy or a very high temperature gas-cooled nuclear reactor. Because of harsh reaction conditions of high temperature and pressure with extremely corrosive reactants and products, there have been scarce and limited number of data reported on the pressurized $H_2SO_4$ decomposition. This work focuses whether the $H_2SO_4$ decomposition can occur at high pressure in a noble-metal reactor, which possibly resists corrosive acidic chemicals and possesses catalytic activity for the reaction. Decomposition reactions were conducted in a Pt-lined tubular reactor without any other catalytic species at conditions of $800^{\circ}C$ to $900^{\circ}C$ and 0 bar (ambient pressure) to 10 bar with 95 wt% $H_2SO_4$. The Pt-lined reactor was found to endure the corrosive pressurized condition, and its inner surface successfully carried out a catalytic role in decomposing $H_2SO_4$ to $SO_2$ and $O_2$. This preliminary result has proposed the availability of noble metal-lined reactors for the high temperature, high pressure sulfuric acid decomposition.

  • Effects of pressure, temperature, gas velocity, and fuel flow rate on reduction of three oxygen carriers, SDN70, OC-1, OC-2, were measured and investigated in a pressurized bubbling fluidized bed reactor. Among three oxygen carriers OC-2 was selected as the best oxygen carrier in view of fuel conversion and $CO_2$ selectivity. However, all oxygen carriers showed good reactivity even at high pressure conditions. SDN70 particle showed maximum reactivity at $900^{\circ}C$ and low reactivity at $950^{\circ}C$. However, reactivity decay of OC-1 and OC-2 particles at high temperature condition was negligible. The fuel conversion and the $CO_2$ selectivity slightly decreased as the gas velocity increased, whereas they are slightly increased as the fuel concentration increased.

  • The Sulfur-Iodine thermochemical hydrogen production process (SI process) consists of the Bunsen reaction section, the $H_2SO_4$ decomposition section, and the HI decomposition section. The $HI_x$ solution ($I_2-HI-H_2O$) could be recycled to Bunsen reaction section from the HI decomposition section in the operation of the integrated SI process. The phase separation characteristic of the Bunsen reaction using the $HI_x$ solution was similar to that of $I_2-H_2O-SO_2$ system. On the other hands, the amount of produced $H_2SO_4$ phase was small. To investigate the effects of $SO_2$ solubility on Bunsen reaction, the continuous Bunsen reaction was performed at variation of the amounts of $SO_2$ gas. Also, it was carried out to make sure of the effects of partial pressure of $SO_2$ in the condition of 3bar of $SO_2-O_2$ atmosphere. As the results, the characteristic of Bunsen reaction was improved with increasing the amounts and solubility of $SO_2$ gas. The concentration of Bunsen products was changed by reverse Bunsen reaction and evaporation of HI after 12 h.

  • Recently submarine and unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) are equipped with a fuel cell system as an air independent propulsion system. Methanol fuel processor can efficiently supply the hydrogen to the fuel cell system to improve the ability to dive. This study investigated the optimal conditions of the methanol fuel processor that may be used in the closed environment. For this purpose, the numerical model based on Gibbs minimization equation was established for steam reformer and three exhaust gas burners. After simulating the characteristics of steam reformer according to the steam-to-carbon ratio (SCR) and the pressure change, the SCR condition was able to narrow down to 1.1 to 1.5. Considering water consumption and the amount of heat recovered from three burners, the optimum condition of the SCR can be determined to be 1.5. Nevertheless, the additional heat supply is required to satisfy the heat balance of the methanol fuel processor in the SCR=1.5. In other to obtain additional amount of heat, the combustion of methanol is better than the increased of SCR in terms of system design.
