Adaptive Q-Algorithm for Multiple Tag Identification in EPCglobal Gen-2 RFID System

  • EPCglobal Class-1 Gen-2 protocol has been proposed for UHF-band RFID systems. In Gen-2 standard, Q-algorithm was proposed to select a frame size for the next query round without estimating the number of tags. Therefore, the Q-algorithm has advantage that the reader's algorithm is simpler than other algorithms. However, it is impossible to allocate the optimized frame size. Also, the original Q-algorithm did not define an optimized parameter C for adjusting the frame size. In this paper, we propose an adaptive Q-algorithm with the different parameter $C_c$ and $C_i$ in accordance with the status of reply slot. Simulation results show that the proposed adaptive Q-algorithm outperforms the original Gen-2 Q-algorithm.

  • We present a square root algorithm in $F_q$ which generalizes Atkin's square root algorithm [9] for finite field $F_q$ of q elements where $q{\equiv}5$ (mod 8) and Kong et al.'s algorithm [11] for the case $q{\equiv}9$ (mod 16). Our algorithm precomputes ${\xi}$ a primitive $2^s$-th root of unity where s is the largest positive integer satisfying $2^s|q-1$, and is applicable for the cases when s is small. The proposed algorithm requires one exponentiation for square root computation and is favorably compared with the algorithms of Atkin, M$\ddot{u}$ller and Kong et al.

In the Q-algorithm, the reader calculates a frame size without estimating the number of tags in it's identification range. It uses only the slot status. Therefore, Q-algorithm has advantage that the reader's algorithm is simpler than other algorithms. However, it cannot allocate an optimized frame size because it does not consider the number of tags. Also, the conventional Q-algorithm does not define an optimized parameter value C for adjusting the frame size. In this paper, we propose a modified Q-algorithm and evaluate the performance with computer simulations. The proposed Q-algorithm estimates the number of tags at every query round, and determines the parameter value C based on the estimated number of tags.

A Scheme to Optimize Q-Algorithm for Fast Tag Identification (고속 태그 식별을 위한 Q-알고리즘 최적화 방안)

In this paper, we propose the optimized parameter values for minimizing the identification time by various computer simulations.

  • Both EPCglobal Generation-2 (Gen2) for passive RFID systems and Intelleflex for semi-passive RFID systems use probabilistic slotted ALOHA with Q algorithm, which is a kind of dynamic framed slotted ALOHA (DFSA), as the tag anti-collision algorithm. A better tag anti-collision algorithm can reduce collisions so as to increase the efficiency of tag identification. In this paper, we introduce and analyze the estimation methods of the number of slots and tags for DFSA. To increase the efficiency of tag identification, we propose two new tag anti-collision algorithms, which are Chebyshev's inequality (CHI) algorithm and hybrid Q algorithm, and compare them with the conventional Q algorithm and adaptive adjustable framed Q (AAFQ) algorithm, which is mentioned in Part I. The simulation results show that AAFQ performs the best in Gen2 scenario. However, in Intelleflex scenario the proposed hybrid Q algorithm is the best. That is, hybrid Q provides the minimum identification time, shows the more consistent collision ratio, and maximizes throughput and system efficiency in Intelleflex scenario.

Anti-collision Algorithm with Early Cancellation of Query Round in RFID Systems

  • The performance of anti-collision algorithm in RFID systems, which are based on FSA algorithm, may be affected by the frame size a query round. In this paper, an anti-collision algorithm with early cancellation of query round is proposed to enhance the performance of EPCglobal Class-1 Gen-2. The Q-algorithm calculates a Q value to determine the next frame size during a query round. In the proposed algorithm, if the new Q value is different from the previous one, the reader transmits a QueryAdjust command to cancel the current query round. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can have a stable performance irrespective of the C value of Q-algorithm and the number of tags.

  • This paper presents comparison of 18000-3 ASK and PJM mode RFID in terms of reading speed. This is accomplished by counting the occurrences of a few representative blocks which constitute the reader / tag interactions for each mode. To apply FS (frame slotted)-aloha protocol, four Q-algorithms, which are a Q-algorithm suggested in the standard document, a fixed Q-algorithm, a minimum Q-algorithm and the number of tag dependent Q-algorithm, are used. Through some simulations, we present the reading speed of each mode with respect to the Q-algorithm and the comparison of the reading speed between the two modes for each Q-algorithms.

  • In this paper, we propose an improved anti-collision algorithm. We have designed an anti-collision unit using this algorithm for the 18000-6 Type C Class 1 Generation 2 standard (Gen2). The Gen2 standard uses a Q-algorithm for incremental method on the Dynamic Slot-Aloha algorithm. It has basically enhanced performance over the Slot-Aloha algorithm. Unfortunately, there are several non-clarified parts: initial value. If an incorrect value is selected, it causes degradation in performance. To increase throughput and system efficiency, and to decrease tag identification time, we propose an improved anti-collision algorithm. prorosed Q algorithm has an increment of 5% of system efficiency and a decrement of 9% of tag identification time.

  • In this paper, we analyze the performance of probabilistic slotted anti-collision algorithm used in EPCglobal Class-1 Generation-2 (Gen2). To increase throughput and system efficiency, and to decrease tag identification time and collision ratio, we propose new tag anti-collision algorithms, which are FAFQ (fired adjustable flamed Q) algorithm and AAFQ (adaptive adjustable framed Q) algorithm, by using QueryAdjust command. We also propose grouping method based on Gen2 to improve the efficiency of tag identification. The simulation results show that all the proposed algorithms outperform Q algorithm, and AAFQ algorithm performs the best. That is, AAFQ has an increment of 5% of system efficiency and a decrement of 4.5% of collision ratio. For FAFQ and AAFQ algorithm, the performance of grouping method is similar to that of ungrouping method. However, for Q algorithm in Gen2, grouping method can increase throughput and system efficiency, and decrease tag identification time and collision ratio compared with ungrouping method.
