  • Recently, as water pollution accidents in rivers have increased, there is an increased interest in water quality forecast with accurate simulation. QUAL2E model, widely used for water quality analysis, uses the same hydraulic characteristics, such as depth and velocity, in a reach. The flow of the river is changed by various hydraulic constructions or by topography in a real river channel. In this study, a hydraulic connection module is developed to consider flow variations of river channels in QUAL2E model. The module uses the simulations results of non-uniform flow of a 1-D hydraulic model such as DWOPER or HEC-RAS. The improved QUAL2E model with this module was applied to a downstream section of Paldang Dam on the Han River. The results show the variation of water quality very well in a reach where flowing vary abruptly, like the Jamsil submerged weir.

  • Detailed flow analysis in river is essential to increase the accuracy of water quality simulation since flow variation depends on many factors such as cross sections, channel slopes, and bed materials. In the QUAL2E stream water quality simulation model, the hydraulic coefficients are assigned to the reach that is collection of computational element using the hydraulic coefficient. This study developed a module that can incorporate the results of non-uniform flow analysis and assign such information to each individual element. Model application focused on the upstream of the Hoengseong reservoir including the reservoir where significant flow change is expected. Comparing with original QUAL2E model the developed module improved the result of water quality simulation without considering the relation of flow velocity and flow depth in terms of flow rates.

  • It is often believed that a more complex water quality model is better able to simulate reality. The more complex a model, however, the more parameters are involved thus increases the cost and uncertainty of modeling processes. The objective of this study was to compare the performance of two steady-state river water quality models, QUAL2E and QUAL-NIER, that have different complexity. QUAL-NIER is recently developed by National Institute of Environmental Research aiming to enhance the simulation capability of QUAL2E for eutrophic rivers. It is a carbon based model that considers different forms, such as dissolved versus particulate and labile versus refractory, of carbon and nutrients, and the contribution of autochthonous loading due to algal metabolism. The models were simultaneously applied to Nakdong River and their performance was evaluated by statistical verification with field data. Both models showed similar performance and satisfactorily replicated the longitudinal variations of BOD, T-N, T-P, Chl.a concentrations along the river. The algal blooms occurred at the stagnant reaches of downstream were also reasonably captured by the models. Although QUAL-NIER somewhat reduced the magnitude of errors, the hypothesis tests revealed no statistical evidence to justify its better performance. The contribution of autochthonous carbon and nutrient load by algal metabolism was insignificant because the hydraulic retention time is relatively short compare to the time scale of kinetic reactions. The results imply that the kinetic processes included in QUAL-NIER are too complex for the nature and scale of the real processes involved, thus needs to be optimized for improving the modeling efficiency.

  • Major factors affecting water quality in rivers are transportation, input of pollutant loads and kinetic transformation of pollutants. Government level decision makings on water quality management are based on steady state water quality modeling. However, it is more than often that such a steady state assumption is far from real situations in rivers. Therefore, it is unavoidable to have modeling errors in water quality modeling especially for steady state modeling for longer period of time. Authors attempted to identify sources of errors in results of steady state models and thus tried to find out ways to minimize those errors. Three water quality models, QUAL2E (Brown et al., 1983), QUAL2K (Chapra et al., 2006) and CAP (Seo and Lee, 2000) were applied to the lower stream of the Geum River. $BOD_5$ and COD tend to underestimate observed data while TN and TP showed relatively smaller errors. QUAL2E model provided best calibration results for BOD5 and TP and QUAL2K model showed best calibration results for TN. Since these errors are only relative values, it was difficult to conclude which model is better performing in certain situations. The most probable reasons for errors in water quality modeling are; 1) inappropriate consideration on flow characteristics, 2) lack of information on incoming pollutant load and 3) inappropriate location of sampling for water quality analysis.

  • QUAL2E-AFOSM model is developed to forecast the water quality by reliability analysis in the Nakdong River. A varied-flow analysis is performed for the reach of Waegwan to Mulgeum to estimate hydraulic parameters. An optimization technique by BFGS method is applied to determine the optimum reaction parameters and calibrations and verifications are performed based on these parameters. A reliability analysis for the stochastic analysis in a river is studied using the AFOSM method. The variations of water quality and discharge in the headwater, tributaries, and reaction coefficients are considered. Risks of violating existing water quality standards at several loactions in the Nakdong River are computed by using the QUAL2E-AFOSM method. The computed results computed by QUAL2E-AFOSM model agree with those of the Monte-Carlo method in QUAL2EU model.

  • The QUAL2K has the same basic characteristics as the QUAL2E model, which has been widely used in stream water quality modeling; in QUAL2K, however, various functions are supplemented. The QUAL2Kw model uses a genetic algorithm(GA) for automatic calibration of QUAL2K, and it can search for optimum water quality parameters efficiently using the calculation results of the model. The QUAL2Kw model was applied to the Gangneung Namdaecheon River on the east side of the Korean Peninsula. Because of the effluents from the urban area, the middle and lower parts of the river are more polluted than the upper parts. Moreover, the hydraulic characteristics differ between the lower and upper parts of rivers. Thus, the river reaches were divided into seven parts, auto-calibration for the multiple reaches was performed using the function of the user-defined automatic calibration of the rates worksheets. Because GA parameters affect the optimal solution of the model, the impact of the GA parameters used in QUAL2Kw on the fitness of the model was analyzed. Sensitivity analysis of various factors, such as population size, crossover probability, crossover mode, strategy for mutation and elitism, mutation rate, and reproduction plan, were performed. Using the results of this sensitivity analysis, the optimum GA parameters were selected to achieve the best fitness value.

  • Going abreast of high public concerns on the environment, the need of environmental modeling has been increased to assess the impact of space exploitation of environment. GIS offers potential solutions to the many problems encountered during water-quality modeling. But there are also many problems associated with the modeling. The preparation of necessary parameters for the modeling can be complicated. Also, the results from one model can be different from each other even the same area is analyzed. This paper aims to develop the data processing system to couple the Qual2E and HyGIS in which Qual2E input and output data files can be created, modified and processed using HyGIS and assess the performance of the system. A structural analysis and standardization of modeling are conducted to identify data flow and processing of Qual2E. Algorithms of the defined processors are designed and developed as component modules. The data model of HyGIS-Qual2E is designed, and GUI(Graphical User Interface) is developed using Visual Basic 6.0 and GDK.

  • In this study, reach boundaries in QUAL2E Model were set by the locations of point-waste discharge or tributary input and measured or direct calculated hydrologic factors were used in computation as much as possible. South Platte Experimental River in Colorado, USA was selected as a target river and data collected during September 1991 and January 1992 periods were used for calibration and verification, respectively. Constituents modeled in this study are 5-day carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand(CBOD$) and dissolved oxygen(DO). The good agreement was obtained between a calculated using this model and observed, less than 5% to DO and about 20% to CBOD$. According to the result of water-quality prediction, experimental river is classified as the 4th category by the criteria of environmental protection agency in the USA in 2001.
