  • Entrance floor in hospital has became important space for medical service in holistic perspective and image enhancement. However, basically a discussion of the qualitative properties and the role of public space is paucity in change of public spaces paradigm. In accordance with this problem, this study consider the change of paradigm in public space based on earlier studies and create classification criterion of space. According to the criterion, G/D ratio and the qualitative spatial area ratio of 26 general hospitals which were planned over 500 beds are analyzed by case study method. The conclusion of this study is as follows. 1) The space according to the medical function is variable element. So the public space should be planned from function-subordinate space to self-reliance space in the future. 2) There is no correlation between the high G/D ratio and the high ratio of qualitative spacial area. In other word It's hard to say that the public space which G/D ratio is high is qualitative space. 3) Since 2000, various types in accordance with the circulation system is applied to public space. And ratio of qualitative spacial area is relatively high in the street type and the concourse type. 4) The qualitative spatial area ratio of stay space is higher than passage's one.

  • This paper attempts to explore the universal foundation on which the discourses on the validity criteria in qualitative research should be based, and further discuss in depth the scope and direction of an adequate validity criterion in qualitative research by critical examination of previous discourses. To establish the foundation for qualitative research, first of all, the concept of quality and qualitative paradigm were examined in terms of ontology and epistemology, especially focused on the works carried out by Aristotle, Kenneth and Boyd. Secondly, the earlier studies on the validity of qualitative research were critically reviewed in terms of the theoretical findings on the concept of quality and qualitative paradigm. The major results include the following: First, the true content of quality is defined as the 'what-ness' or essence of things perceived by subjects, and qualitative paradigm as adequate framework for qualitative research is comprised of two intrinsic modes: one is the mode of awareness and the other is that of expression. Second, qualitative researchers are able to reach to the higher level of validity by considering not only the subjectivity and the originality but also the sociality in drawing a conclusion through qualitative perception. Third, the trend of previous validity discourses can be firmly summarized as the effort to overcome the effect of quantitative research and acquire the true identity for qualitative research, which is subjectivity, and as the quest to compromise the tension between subjectivity and sociality. Finally, based on the findings, several research topics are suggested. For example, the more attention should be paid to the area of the expression of qualitative awareness as a way of overcome the tension between subjectivity and publicness.

  • This paper presents methodological paradigms : quantitative positivistic (logical empiricism) as the received tradition in the scientific inquiry and qualitative naturalistic (post -positivism or nataralism) as a new paradigm in the Kuhnian sense. Various kind of qualitative methods under the umbrella term, qualitative inquiry, were briefly introduced. Details on the definition, epistemology, naming of subject, field technique (participant observation and ethnographic interview) of ethnographic research method as an adequate method for studying on the unique nursing phenomena in Korean culture were done. Besides, the concept of triangulation, issues on the methododogical paradigm, a criteria for rigor of qualitative naturalistic inquiry were mentioned.

  • Computer aided conceptual solution of engineering problems can be effectively implemented by qualitative reasoning based on a physical model. Qualitative reasoning needs modeling paradigm which provides intellignet control of modeling assumptions and robust inferences without quantitative information about the system. We developed reasoning method using new algebra of qualitative mathematics. The method is applied to a conceptual design scheme of anadaptive control system of cutting process. The method identifies differences between proportional and proportional-integral control scheme of cutting process. It is shown that unfeasible investment could be prevented in the early conceptual stage by the qualitative reasoning procedures proposed in this paper.

  • This study emphasizes the everyday life study based on the proper study method. From the sociological literatures, everyday life's concept, it's various characteristics, two different perspectives and life-history approach are introduced. One Home Economics Paradigm Study published in 1996 is summarized to point out the importance of paradigm shift from quantitative method based on positivism to qualitative study for human everyday life study. I examined our everyday life studies as a reader and a member of screening committee and introduced four articles using different qualitative study methods.

  • This study explores the trends and implications of social welfare qualitative research in Korea. The results are follows. At present, social welfare qualitative research is entering in the quickening period. The characteristics of configuration of social welfare qualitative research in Korea are overwhelming inferiority in post-positivism and heuristics, wide differences between universities in metropolitan area and in local area at the aspect of amounts of qualitative research products, rapid increase in the interests of qualitative research in doctoral candidates, and distinguishment of doctoral candidates as a leader group in qualitative research. The results of critics of qualitative researches are follow: 1) initiative of naturalistic interpretism 2) inclination of methodicism 3) poorness of critical themes 4) propensity in grounded theory. These trends of social welfare qualitative research in Korea, in spite of the limits, have various implications: 1) Trying to critics of social welfare knowledge based on positivism and formation of opposing discourse to positivism 2) diversification in paradigm of inquiry 3) spread of narrative thinking of social welfare phenomenon.

  • This paper investigates the interaction among the paradigm of Low-Carbon Society (LCS) and the megatrends in field of population, environment, geopolitics, and energy. The paradigm of LCS is regarded as a 'social will' trend, distinguished from other 'phenomenal' trends. The qualitative analysis shows that the megatrends and the LCS paradigm have positive/neutral/negative impacts on one another, while some impacts can be reversed to other types of impact with the conditions having ripened. In quantitative analysis, the correlation between the LCS paradigm and the economy is traced with our Integrated Assessment Model, looking into such response options as population control, increase in labor force participation, and productivity enhancement to maintain utility level despite the pursuit of LCS paradigm. The future challenges in national strategy and S&T policy are suggested, based on the interaction analyses.

  • The purposes of the present article are to suggest pragmatism as offering a philosophical paradigm for mixed methods research, to explain the fundamental principles of mixed methodology, and to present examples of research for understanding how to apply it to family studies. Mixed methods research is the class of research where the researcher mixes or combines quantitative and qualitative techniques, methods, approaches, concepts or language into a single study. Mixed methodology has its roots in pragmatism, which is a new philosophical paradigm to criticize the traditional dualism and to endorse eclecticism and pluralism. The present article argues that mixed methods research has the potential to answer a broader and more complete range of research questions, and to provide strong evidence for a conclusion through convergence and corroboration of the qualitative and the quantitative methods.

  • Grinding has difficulty in satisfying the qualitative knowledge based on the skilled expert as well as quantitative data for all user. Design of grinding database is based on the frame-based model for utilizing the empirical and qualitative knowledge. Inthis paper, basic strategy to develop the grinding database by frame-based model, which is strongly dependent upon experience and intuition, frame-base model, which is strongly dependent upon experience and intuition, is described. Design of grinding database is based on the frame-based model for utilizing the ambiguous knowledge and inference is accomplised by the object-oriented paradigm system.
