  • A column test was performed far a new-type column with a quasi static test. An internally confined hollow reinforced concrete column with a corrugated steel tube (ICH RC-CT column) was tested to evaluate its seismic performance. And also, a general solid RC column was tested fur the comparison. The test was performed as planned drift levels. The lateral displacements and the lateral loads of column specimens were measured during tests. From the test results, the ICH RC-CT column showed smaller energy absorbing capacity than a solid RC column but showed the almost equal energy ductility and equivalent viscous damping ratio to those of the solid RC column.

  • Past experiences from recent earthquakes indicate that shear failures of beam-column connections were one of the main reasons causing significant damages and collapses of RC structures subjected to earthquake loadings. Many researchers and engineers have conducted to propose an effective way to improve the joint shear strength of RC connections. This paper presents an analytical model for the RC exterior beam-column joints strengthened with CFRP sheets. In the analytical model, the effect of shear behavior of the RC beam-column joint, bond slip of the beam longitudinal reinforcements and CFRP sheets were considered and incorporated into the non-linear structural analysis program. Final analytical results were compared with those from the experiment of eight exterior RC beam-column specimens. The analytical results showed that the developed connection model is very useful to investigate the hysteretic joint behavior and overall load-displacement response of the RC beam-column connections strengthened with CFRP sheets.

  • Column tests were performed for a new type of column, the internally confined hollow concrete filled tube column (ICH CFT column), to evaluate its seismic performance. The seismic performances for two types of ICH CFT columns and a general solid RC column were evaluated and compared by quasi-static tests. The displacements and the lateral loads of column specimens were measured during tests. Ductilities, absorbed energy, equivalent damping ratios, damage indices were calculated from recorded data. From the test results, the ICH CFT column shows superior seismic performances with double moment capacity and larger energy absorbing capacity over that of a solid RC column.

  • Confined transverse reinforcement was arranged in a plastic hinge region to resist the lateral load that increased the lateral confinement effect in the bridge substructure. Columns increased the seismic performance through securing stiffness and ductility. The calculation method of transverse reinforcements at plastic hinges is reported in the AASHTO-LRFD specification. This specification was only proposed for solid reinforced concrete (RC) columns. Therefore, if this specification is applied for another column as composite column besides the solid RC column, the column cannot be properly evaluated. The application of this specification is particularly limited for composite hollow RC columns. The composite hollow RC column consists of transverse, longitudinal reinforcements, cover concrete, core concrete, and an inner tube inserted in the hollow face. It increases the ductility, strength, and stiffness in composite hollow RC columns. This paper proposes a modified equation for economics and rational design through investigation of displacement ductility when applying the existing specifications at the composite hollow RC column. Moreover, a parametric study was performed to evaluate the detailed behavior. Using these results, a calculation method of economic transverse reinforcements is proposed.

  • A nonlinear column model of an internally confined hollow (ICH) reinforced concrete (RC) column was suggested and a parametric study was performed. The suggested column model considered the confining effect and the material nonlinearity of concrete. To verify the suggested column model, its analysis results were compared with the test results from previous researchers and a quasi static test performed in this study. They showed that the suggested column model was reasonable and had acceptable accuracy. The results from parametric studies showed that the thickness of the internal tube, concrete strength, and the hollow ratio of the ICH RC column affected its behavior.

  • This paper summarizes full-scale gravity-load test results on CFT column-to-RC flat plate connections reinforced with shearhead. CFT construction has many structural and constructional advantages over conventional steel and RC column construction and is gaining wide acceptance. Meanwhile the use of RC flat plate system in the basement and residential floors of tall buildings is often mandatory to reduce story height and enable rapid construction in domestic practice. Combining CFT column and flat plate floor is expected to result in further rapid construction. However, the issues related to connecting CFT column to RC flat plate have not been fully addressed yet. Several promising connecting schemes by using steel shearhead were proposed and tested in this study. Test results showed that the proposed connection can exhibit the punching shear strength higher than RC flat plate counterparts. An empirical formula that can reasonably predicts the punching shear strength of the proposed connection was also proposed.

  • In Korea highway bridges, most piers are the type of one-column or multi-column ones. So, in this study, under an environment applying BIM so fast, to activate researches on two-column piers subjected to bidirectional seismic loading, a 3D parametric modeling method was selected when the model of two-column piers and one-column piers were formed. Also, interface module between input data in structural analysis and 3D model of RC pier was developed. The module can create the input data for non-linear structural analysis like material, geometric properties and additional coefficients.

  • The collapse of reinforced concrete (RC) frame buildings is mainly caused by the failure of columns. To prevent brittle failure of RC column, numerous studies have been conducted on the seismic performance of strengthened RC columns. Concrete jacketing method, which is one of the retrofitting method of RC members, can enhance strength and stiffness of original RC column with enlarged section and provide uniformly distributed lateral load capacity throughout the structure. The experimental studies have been conducted by many researchers to analyze seismic performance of seismic strengthened RC column. However, structures which have plan and vertical irregularities shows torsional behavior, and therefore it causes large deformation on RC column when subjected to seismic load. Thus, test results from concentric cyclic loading can be overestimated comparing to eccentric cyclic test results, In this paper, two kinds of eccentric loading pattern was suggested to analyze structural performance of RC columns, which are strengthened by concrete jacketing method with new details in jacketed section. Based on the results, it is concluded that specimens strengthened with new concrete jacketing method increased 830% of maximum load, 150% of maximum displacement and changed the failure modes of non-strengthened RC columns.

  • Reinforced concrete (RC) columns are crucial in building structures and they are of higher vulnerability to terrorist threat than any other structural elements. Thus it is of great interest and necessity to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the possible responses of RC columns when exposed to high intensive blast loads. The primary objective of this study is to derive analytical formulas to assess vulnerability of RC columns using an advanced numerical modelling approach. This investigation is necessary as the effect of blast loads would be minimal to the RC structure if the explosive charge is located at the safe standoff distance from the main columns in the building and therefore minimizes the chance of disastrous collapse of the RC columns. In the current research, finite element model is developed for RC columns using LS-DYNA program that includes a comprehensive discussion of the material models, element formulation, boundary condition and loading methods. Numerical model is validated to aid in the study of RC column testing against the explosion field test results. Residual capacity of RC column is selected as damage criteria. Intensive investigations using Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) methodology are then implemented to evaluate the influence of scaled distance, column dimension, concrete and steel reinforcement properties and axial load index on the vulnerability of RC columns. The generated empirical formulae can be used by the designers to predict a damage degree of new column design when consider explosive loads. With an extensive knowledge on the vulnerability assessment of RC structures under blast explosion, advancement to the convention design of structural elements can be achieved to improve the column survivability, while reducing the lethality of explosive attack and in turn providing a safer environment for the public.

  • Progressive collapse resistance of RC buildings can be analyzed by considering column loss scenarios. Using finite element analysis and a static test, the progressive collapse process of a RC frame under monotonic vertical displacement of a side column was investigated, simulating a column removal scenario. A single-story 1/3 scale RC frame that comprises two spans and two bays was tested and computed, and downward displacement of a side column was placed until failure. Our study offers insight into the failure modes and progressive collapse behavior of a RC frame. It has been noted that the damage of structural members (beams and slabs) occurs only in the bay where the removal side column is located. Greater catenary action and tensile membrane action are mobilized in the frame beams and slabs, respectively, at large deformations, but they mainly happen in the direction where the frame beams and slabs are laterally restrained. Based on the experimental and computational results, the mechanism of progressive collapse resistance of RC frames at different stages was discussed further. With large deformations, a simplified calculation method for catenary action and tensile membrane action is proposed.
