Knowledge and attitude change towards radiation protection after radiation safety management education in dental hygiene students (치위생과 학생들의 학업관련 특성에 따른 방사선안전관리 교육 후 방사선 방어에 대한 지식과 태도의 변화)

  • Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the knowledge and attitude towards radiation protection after radiation safety management education in dental hygiene students. Methods: After receiving informed consents, a self-reported questionnaire was carried out for 135 dental hygiene students in Busan on June 17 for preliminary survey and September 3 for post-education survey, 2011. The questionnaire was modified from Han and consisted of 5 questions of general characteristics, 6 questions of radiation use, 7 questions of scholastic characteristics, 15 questions of knowledge towards radiation safety management, and 15 questions of attitude towards radiation safety management. Cronbach's alpha was 0.808 in the knowledge towards radiation safety management. Attitude towards radiation safety management included 15 questions of general attitude towards radiation safety management, individual and patient, and attitude toward radiation exposure reduction measured by Likert 5 scale. Cronbach's alpha was 0.970 in the attitude towards radiation safety management. Data were analyzed using SAS version 9.2 for educational analysis, technical analysis and multivariate analysis, paired t-test, and GLM. Results: Significant differences were shown in the knowledge and attitudes towards radiation safety management; the level of knowledge was respectively $9.8{\pm}3.0$ and $12.9{\pm}1.9$ points before and after education, and the level of attitude was $4.28{\pm}0.51$ and $4.53{\pm}0.47$ before and after the education. The levels of knowledge and attitude according to general characteristics showed a significant differences in grade and academic results. Post-education survey suggested that the education is very important and necessary and can change the knowledge and attitude towards radiation safety management in the dental hygiene students. Conclusions: Through the radiation safety management education, the levels of knowledge and attitude towards radiation safety management have changed significantly, which showed that the radiation safety management education proved to be very effective. Therefore, an effective radiation safety management education program is necessary to improve the levels of knowledge and attitude towards radiation safety management in the dental hygiene students.

  • While the use of radiation in the medical field provides diagnosis and treatment with important benefits, we cannot deny that the radiation bombing causes some hindrances. The expansion of radiation use in modem medicine is essential, so the radiation use and preparation of proper measure for safety management has risen as a pressing subject. Therefore, in order to make defensive plans for the prevention of health obstacles to general users of radiation and for the provision of basic data of the health education programs to radiation workers by grasping the knowledge, attitude and behavior towards the radiation safety management of radiation workers in each medical institution and by analyzing the factors that affect the actions of radiation safety management, in this study we conducted questionnaires from September 26 to November 5, 2001 targeting 805 radiation workers in 108 medical institutions including university hospitals, general hospitals, hospitals, clinics and public health centers etc. located in Seoul, four metropolitan cities and small and medium cities, and has obtained the following results. 1. The average point of knowledge on the radiation safety management was 10.96 out of 15. As for the general characteristics, the level of knowledge on radiation safety management was higher with older age, high education background and longer career. 2. The average point of attitude on the radiation safety management was 66.36 out of 75. The attitude point for general characteristics were higher with higher education background, longer career and in case of universities, the level of attitude on the radiation safety management was high. 3. The average of action points on the radiation safety management was 56.09 out of 75. In general characteristics, the action level of radiation safety level was higher with older age, longer career, and the reception of radiation education and in case of university hospitals. 4. It is analyzed that the relation of knowledge, attitude and behavior on the radiation safety management is higher as the levels of knowledge and attitude on the radiation safety management is higher. 5. As a result of analyzing the factors that affect the knowledge on the radiation safety management, the variables that can be explained best was in the order of ‘the behavior on the radiation safety management’, ‘work career’, ‘the attitude on the radiation safety management’, and ‘school career’. 6. As a result of analyzing the factors that affect the attitude on the radiation safety management, the variables that can be explained best was in the order of ‘the behavior on the radiation safety management’, ‘the knowledge on the radiation safety management’, and ‘school career’. 7. Knowledge and Attitude about Radiation Safety Management in Dental Hygiene Students (치위생과 학생의 방사선 안전관리에 대한 지식과 태도)

  • Purpose : This study identified knowledge, attitudes and behavior for radiation safety management of dental hygiene student. And to provide basic data for the development of effective education program for safety management for radiation protection. Methods : A questionnaire survey of questionnaires was conducted on the second and third grade dental hygiene students at three - year college in 'A' area of Gyeongnam province. The questionnaire of 37 items was used to investigate knowledge and attitude about radiation protection. The collected data were analyzed using frequency analysis, mean, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA and pearson's correlation Analysis using the SPSS 21.0 program. Result : Results obtained from this study are as follows. 1. Knowledge level of radiation safety management by general characteristics showed statistically significant difference. 2. Radiation safety education knowledge score was higher in the case of radiation safety education(t=1.660, p<.05). 3. The radiation safety management attitude score was a statistically significant difference between the groups according to 'achievement' (F=1.660, p<.001). In the case of 'radiation protection facilities', there was a statistically significant difference between groups according to the recognition of radiation protection facilities (F=6.001, p<.001). 4. As a result of investigating the relationship between radiation safety management knowledge and attitude, the higher the knowledge level of radiation safety management, the higher the attitude(p<.001). Conclusion : Therefore, radiation safety management education should be organized systematically and it is required to improve not only safety management knowledge, attitude level but also action level.

Analysis of the Trend of Knowledge, Attitude and Behavior Related to Radiation Safety Management : Focused on Radiation Workers at Medical Institutions (방사선안전관리에 대한 지식, 태도 및 행위의 추이분석 : 의료기관 방사선종사자를 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study to survey radiation workers' knowledge, attitude and behavior related to radiation safety management at medical institutions as an educational approach to radiation safety management and to accumulate materials in continuity of past data and, by doing so, to examine changes over time, to analyze long-term trends systematically and to derive ground data for establishing radiation safety control plans to prevent health disorders caused by radiation not only in radiation workers but also in ordinary people. For these purposes, a questionnaire survey was conducted with radiation workers at medical institutions throughout the country for around 40 days in 2001 and 2006. The results are summarized as follows. 1. The levels of knowledge, attitude and behavior related to radiation safety management were all higher in 2006 than in 2001. 2. Statistically significant correlations were observed between knowledge and attitude, between behavior and knowledge and between attitude and behavior in both 2001 and 2006. In particular, the correlation between attitude and behavior were higher in 2006 than in 2001, suggesting that radiation workers' attitude has been improved. 3. Factors affecting radiation workers' behavior related to radiation safety management were knowledge and attitude in both 2001 and 2006, and the effect of attitude was higher than that of knowledge.

An inquiry into dental personnel's Knowledge, attitude and behavior about the defense against dental radiation (치과 의료기관 종사자의 방사선 방어에 대한 지식, 태도 및 행위)

  • The purpose of this study was to understand the relationship among knowledge, attitude, and behavior of dental personnel about the defense against dental radiation according to general features, and help them recognize the importance of defense against dental radiation. A questionnaire survey of 187 dental personnel who were working in 121 medical institutions such as university hospitals, general hospitals, hospitals, clinics, and public health centers in Seoul area was conducted from December 2002 to January 2003. Study findings are as follows: 1. The average knowledge score for the defense of radiation was 9.51(full score=14): By the demographic features, the know level for the defense of radiation was appeared to be different with the occupational category, age, academic background, workplace, year of working, and whether having the education of radiation or not. By questionnaire items, the knowledge for the defense of radiation was high in general, but for the item. 'the average amount of being bombed with radiation according occupations cannot be over 20mSv in a year for prescribed 5 years'. it was 18.7%: and for the item. 'the longer the length between focus and film. the less the amount of skin exposure', it was 40.6%. showing less knowledge for these two items. 2. The average attitude score for the defense of radiation was 64.24 (full score=75): By the demographic features, the attitude score was higher with respondents who were 31-35 years old. 11-15 years of working. and having radiation education. The attitude score by questionnaire items was generally high for all the items. 3. The average behavior score for the defense of radiation was 45.43: (a) By the demographic features, the behavior score for the defense of radiation was appeared to be higher with respondents who were dentists for occupational category, the aged for age, holding higher diploma for academic background, working in the university hospitals for workplace, and having longer occupational career for the year of working. (b) The behavior score for the defense of radiation by questionnaire items was lower than that of the attitude score for all the items. For the item, 'the amount of X-ray radiation is adjusted according to such conditions as patients' age, radiating areas, and kind of films', the score was 4.03; and for the item, 'Must receive the education of safety management of radiation periodically', the score was 1.73 and it was the lowest one. 4. As for the correlation among the knowledge, attitude, and behavior for the defense of radiation, the higher the level of knowledge and attitude, the higher the level of behavior.

The knowledge and attitude toward radiation safety management in dental clinic worker (치과의료기관종사자의 방사선안전관리에 대한 지식 및 태도 조사)

  • Objectives: The aim of the study was to investigate the knowledge and attitude toward radiation safety management in dental clinic worker. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 294 dental clinic workers in dental hospitals and clinics in Gwangju and Jeonnam from February 17 to March 30, 2014. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of radiation safety(8 questions), knowledge of radiation safety(15 questions), and attitudes of radiation safety(16 questions). The survey was done by Likert 5 scale method. Results: In completion of the radiodontia courses, 84.0% of the learners were female workers. 88.0% of the learners took the theoretical and practical courses. Those who work in the university dental hospital accounted for 87.1% and those in dental clinics accounted for 83.2%. Majority of the workers took on Leaden protective clothing in order to protect the thyroid gland. Male workers had more knowledge toward the radiation safety management than the female workers. The attitude toward the radiation safety management revealed the significant differences between age, gender, academic careers, license, clinical careers and the mean number of patients per day(p<0.05). Conclusions: The radiation safety management is very important in dental clinical workers and it is necessary to enhance the attitude toward the radiation safety through continuous education.

Factors Affecting Radiation Protective Behaviors in Perioperative Nurses Applying the Theory of Planned Behavior: Path Analysis (계획된 행위이론을 적용한 수술실 간호사의 방사선 방어행위에 대한 영향요인: 경로분석)

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to identify the factors explaining protective behaviors against radiation exposure in perioperative nurses based on the theory of planned behavior. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study. A total of 229 perioperative nurses participated between October 3 and October 20, 2021. Data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 23.0 and AMOS 23.0 software. The three exogenous variables (attitude toward radiation protective behaviors, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control) and two endogenous variables (radiation protective intention and radiation protective behaviors) were surveyed. Results: The hypothetical model fit the data (χ2/df = 1.18, SRMR = .02, TLI = .98, CFI = .99, RMSEA = .03). Radiation protective intention (β = .24, p = .001) and attitude toward radiation protective behaviors (β = .32, p = .002) had direct effects on radiation protective behaviors. Subjective norm (β = .43, p = .002) and perceived behavior control (β = .24, p = .003) had direct effects on radiation protective intention, which explained 38.0% of the variance. Subjective norm (β = .10, p = .001) and perceived behavior control (β = .06, p = .002) had indirect effects via radiation protective intention on radiation protective behaviors. Attitude toward radiation protective behaviors, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control were the significant factors explaining 49.0% of the variance in radiation protective behaviors. Conclusion: This study shows that the theory of planned behavior can be used to effectively predict radiation protective behaviors in perioperative nurses. Radiation safety guidelines or education programs to enhance perioperative nurses' protective behaviors should focus on radiation protective intention, attitude toward radiation protective behaviors, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control.

Knowledge, Attitude, and Education Needs of Radiation Protection Among Nursing Students and Nurses (간호학생과 간호사의 방사선 방어에 대한 지식, 태도와 교육 요구)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the knowledge, attitude and educational needs of radiation protection among nursing students and nurses, because it is needed to raise awareness of the importance of radiation protection. The participants in this study were 274 including 135 registered nurses on bachelor's degree course who had experience of the operating room practice and 139 nursing students. The questionnaire consisted of 45 items including knowledge, attitude, and educational needs of radiation protection. The findings of the study suggest that safe management education was insufficient for protection of radiation. Though, educational needs and intention of involvement were high, the respondents who were more knowledgeable about radiation protection took a better attitude of radiation protection. A radiation protection course development is needed according to educational needs. Nurses have to get a chance to receive education outside the hospital or be provided with a radiation protection program as internal education. Also, radiation educational experts and various visual and auditory materials are needed to promote effectiveness of education.

A Study on Knowledge, Attitude and Behavior for Radiation Protection of Nurses : Focus on the Operating Rooms and Intensive Care Units (간호사의 방사선 방어 지식, 태도 및 행위에 관한 연구 : 수술실과 중환자실 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the knowledge, attitudes and behaviors of radiation protection in operating room and intensive care unit nurses. The Participants for this study consisted of 240 nurses working in operating rooms and intensive care units of 7 general hospitals located in Busan, South Korea. The data were collected from Feb. 15 to Feb. 29, 2016. The study results were as follows. First, 72.9% of the nurses had never been educated for radiation safety. Second, the mean score of knowledge for radiation protection was 9.21. The knowledge score of radiation safety educated nurses is higher than uneducated of nurses(t=-5.67, p<.001). Third, The mean score of attitude towards radiation protection was 41.80. The attitude score of radiation safety educated nurses is lower than uneducated of nurses(t=0.02, p<.030). Fourth, the mean score of behavior for radiation protection was 32.57. The behavior score of radiation safety educated nurses is higher than uneducated of nurses(t=0.35, p=.001). Consequently, it was found that nurses had lack of the radiation safety education. Overall knowledge and behavior towards radiation protection was low. Therefore, it is necessary to raise awareness of radiation protection and to educate, manage, and improve processes to increasing compliance with protective measures against radiation.

A Survey about Self-Efficacy and Consciousness on the Use of Radiation, Knowledge and Attitude for Student at Department of Dental Hygiene (부산지역 치위생과 학생의 자기효능감과 방사선 이용에 대한 의식도, 지식 및 태도에 관한 조사연구)

  • This research, which was conducted for student at department of dental hygiene, intended to measure the level of self-efficacy and consciousness on the use of radiation, knowledge and attitude on radiation safety management and got the following conclusions. This study was performed from May 8 to July 7, 2011 for 326 students who study at Department of Dental Hygiene of a three-year course in Busan areas. The result of as follows; 1. As a result of comparing the average of a sense of self-efficacy according to the characteristics of those surveyed, a statistically significant difference(p<0.01)(p<0.001) was found according to grade point average, subjective health condition. 2. As a result of comparing the average level of consciousness about radiation use according to the characteristics of those surveyed, a statistically meaningful difference(p<0.05)(p<0.01) was found according to grade, grade point average. 3. As a result of conducting a correlation analysis among self-efficacy, consciousness on the use of radiation, knowledge and attitude on RSM, the correlation of self-efficacy and consciousness, knowledge, and attitude was r=0.108, 0.203, 0.231 respectively, all of which was a plus correlation(p<0.01). we believe that a variety of programs should be offered to be capable of enhancing knowledge and attitude on RSM, self-efficacy.
