  • This paper presents the Case of Systems Engineering Application for the Railway Total-Safety Project. Key points to consider for project are: 1) Establish the SE Based-Project organization system, 2) Define the SE Activities, 3) Manage technically the SE Based-Project, etc. They were of much help that the Railway Total-Safety Project which were efficiently implemented and managed. As I take it, the Systems Engineering is very reasonable approach for the systematical and technical conduct of a project.

  • As a mass transportation system, a railway contains potential risks that may result in a high death rate and property losses. Accordingly, Railroad Safety Technology R&D Corps. is adopting the plan of the construction of Railway Safety Test Facilities as a part of the Railway Total Safety Project to enhance the railway safety, and carrying out researches on effective project management methods with Systems Engineering techniques. When a system or a service is realized, such as the Railway Total Safety Project, it needs to be verified by requirements and the process of verification is to check whether customers/stakeholders requirements have been properly transformed into a system or a service. Recently, building the standardized verification system up could be the solution to reduce possible system-failed risks. To support that, we propose the more effectual verification method of constructing the Railway Safety Test Facilities applying the systems engineering tool to the research.

  • To establish the national railway safety system, the railway total safety technology development project has been promoted by Ministry of Construction and Transportation (MOCT) since August 2004. The project is mainly focused on the prevention of a critical railway accident and the reduction of accident/mortality rate. To achieve its goal effectively, the project is composed of 15 sub-projects each of which can be categorized into three different technological area. This work deals with the verification results for the outcomes of the sub-projects carried out at the 2nd year of the project. A new verification procedure is developed and applied to the project based on the system engineering. Three criterions - The suitability of the realization of a function, the suitability of a physical structure, the suitability of a design analysis report - are used for the verifications. The verification results are investigated by calculating standard deviations of scores of each results.

  • Requirement management is an important phase that has a significant influence on the project success. As a risk to a project fail is getting bigger, people adopt Systems Engineering method to the development of the effective requirement management. Accordingly, Railroad Safety Technology R&D Corps. is progressing the plan of the construction of Railway Safety Test Facilities as a part of the Railway Total Safety Project to enhance the railway safety, and carrying out researches on effective requirement management methods with Systems Engineering techniques. To support that, we introduce the Systems Engineering Requirement Management Process and propose the more effectual management method of constructing the Railway Safety Test Facilities applying the model-based systems engineering tool to the research.

  • To establish the national railway safety system, the railway total safety technology development project has been promoted by Ministry of Construction and Transportation (MOCT) since August 2004. The project has producted successful results in many areas of railway safety, however, it is required that the research field should be re-examined to meet the aim of the project. To do that, the precedence of the investment of research resources should be reviewed and determined. The risk of serious railway accidents such as train collision, derailment and level crossing accidents are estimated. From the estimation result and the statistics on the railway accidents over fast few years, the risk factors of railway accidents can be calculated.

Recently, various systems engineering tools such as CORE or Cradle are applied to manage the system requirements and the project management process in the part of the aerospace engineering and automobile engineering so on. The railway industry also makes an effort to develop an efficient management skills using systems engineering tools as the railway system is multi-disciplinary. Therefore, we propose the more effectual management method of constructing the Railway Safety Test Facilities applying the systems engineering tool to the research.

  • Recently, many organizations such as, including government, railroad operational, railroad facilities managemental and research authorities have made a lot of efforts to identify and prevent hazards from leading to accidents and solve them all over the railroad industry. Railroad total safety technology development project conducted as one of national R&D projects has established business formation structure based on system engineering as an effort to define and give a solution to facing problems in the field of railroad. This paper is building procedures to verify the outcomes derived from this project. The verification process is the one for verifying the outcome produced in the final stage of the project or during the project. It makes sure that the system is satisfying the system requirements through verification of the outcomes produced after conducting the project for verification. We've made verification plan for technically reasonable verification using verification process developed through this research, and established master verification plan in the level of 15 detailed projects for interim and final outcomes produced.

  • Recently, the demand regarding reliability and safety of the railroad are increased as built to high-speed railway and Driverless LRT systems. Accordingly, effective management of construction projects is being applied, with the introduction and use of PMIS computerized systems. Due to the construction of railways, from the start of PMIS research planning, design, procurement, to construction and commissioning, various expertise is being carefully gathered, and by integrating it into the unified budget ideas and processes, rational, efficient, organized, and manageable financial plans are developed for the computerized system. However, the current PMIS does not take into account the life-cycle. Therefore, this study is to bring attention to the BIM smart BOM-based configuration management for life-cycle through the consideration for railway construction project management.

  • With the introduction of the RAMS(Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, Safety), the interest of the system assurance has been increased. First of all, fast-growing electronic circuit requires analyzing the failure rates, by dividing the signalling system more specifically. Since 2005, the K.N.R (Korean National Railway) has incorporated ERP(Enterprise Resource Planning) in order to establish the complete status as the top international comprise, therefore while ordering the project, it has established the classification system and then has been applying to ERP system in 2007. Due to the complex of the classification system, the reliability analysis of the signalling system was assessed with the limit of IXL ATP with On-board and wayside equipment. This paper assumed MTBF(Mean Time Between Failure), MTTR((Mean Time Between Repair) of total signalling system, by using the classification of ERP program.
