Rapid Prototyping of Head-of-Bed Angle Measurement System using Open-Source Hardware (오픈소스하드웨어를 이용한 침상머리각도 측정 시스템의 래피드 프로토타이핑)

  • When the study on the relationship between the Head-of-Bed (HOB) angle and ventilator-associated pneumonia is performed, the fact that the HOB angle can only be measured intermittently imposes a significant limitation on the study. Therefore, there has been demand for the development of a device that can measure the HOB angle continuously. In this paper, we propose the rapid prototyping of an HOB measurement system using open-source hardware and software. The proposed system helps to maintain the HOB angle at a particular angle by displaying the angle and helps the medical study of pneumonia patients by enabling continuous data acquisition. Firstly, we eliminate the process of making an MCU board by utilizing an open-source hardware mbed LPC1768. Secondly, we reduce the software development time by using libraries and hence enabling the easy use of peripherals. Thirdly, for rapid prototyping, we build the enclosure of the proposed system using a 3D printer. The proposed system can be attached and detached to and from a bed. Therefore, we can attach it to the bed of a patient for whom measurement of the HOB angle is necessary. Finally, we check the measurement performance and the validity of the proposed system through an experiment utilizing an incremental encoder.

A Digital Watermarking of 3D Geometric Model STL for Rapid Prototyping System (쾌속조형 시스템을 위한 3차원 기하학적 형상인 STL의 디지털 워터마킹)

  • In this paper, a new watermarking algorithm for STL files which contains 3D geometric information as triangular facets is proposed. STL files are widely used in rapid prototyping industry as a standard interchange format. The proposed algorithm inserts multi-bit watermark information into the surface normal vector and vertex description area of STL file without distorting the original 3D geometric information. According to the watermark bits, the position of normal vector and the direction of vertex sequence are modulated. The proposed algorithm is robust to the attack of changing the order of the triangular meshes. In addition, the invisibility requirement is also satisfied. Experiment results show that the proposed algorithm can encode and decode watermark bits into the various STL files without any distortion of 3D shape.

  • The simulated die-casting process in which the traditional plaster casting process is combined with Rapid Prototyping technology is being used to produce Al, Mg, and Zn die-casting prototypes. Unlike in the die-casting process, molten metal in the conventional plaster casting process is fed via a gravity pour into a mold and the mold does not cool as quickly as a die-casting mold. The plaster castings have much larger and grosser grain structure as compared as the die-castings and the thin walls of the plaster mold cavity may not be completely fillet Because of lower mechanical properties induced by the large grain structure and incomplete Idling, the conventional plaster casting process is not suitable for the trial die-casting Process. In this work, an enhanced trial die-casting process has been developed in which molten metal in the plaster mold cavity is vibrated and pressurized simultaneously. Patterns for the casting are made by Rapid Prototyping technologies and then plaster molds, which have runner system, are made using these patterns. Imparted pressurized vibration to molten metal has made grain structure of castings much finer and improved fluidity of the molten metal enough to obtain complete filling at thin walls which can not be filled in the conventional plaster casting process.

Rapid Prototyping of Polymer Microfluidic Devices Using CAD/CAM Tools for Laser Micromachining

  • A CAD/CAM system has been developed for rapid prototyping (RP) of microfluidic devices based on excimer laser micromachining. The system comprises of two complementary softwares. One, the CAM tool, creates part programs from CAD models. The other, the Simulator Tool, uses a part program to generate the laser tool path and the 2D and 3D graphical representation of the machined microstructure. The CAM tool's algorithms use the 3D geometry of a microstructure, defined as an STL file exported from a CAD system, and process parameters (laser fluence, pulse repetition frequency, number of shots per area, wall angle), to automatically generate Numerical Control (NC) part programs for the machine controller. The performance of the system has been verified and demonstrated by machining a particle transportation device. The CAM tool simplifies part programming and replaces the tedious trial-and-error approach to creating programs. The simulator tool accepts manual or computer generated part programs, and displays the tool path and the machined structure. This enables error checking and editing of the program before machining, and development of programs for complex microstructures. Combined, the tools provide a user-friendly CAD/CAM system environment for rapid prototyping of microfluidic devices.

  • The necessity of using rapid prototyping(RP) for short-run manufacturing is continuously driving a development of a cost-effective technique that will produce completely-finished quality parts in a very short time. To meet these demands, the improvements in production speed, accuracy, materials, aid cost are crucial. Thus, a new hybrid-RP system performing both deposition and machining in a station is proposed. For the new hybrid RP process to maintain the same degree of process automation as in currently available processes like SLA or FDNI, a sophisticated process planning system is developed. In the process planner, CAD models(STEP AP203) are partitioned into 3D manufacturable volumes called 'Ueposition feature segment"(DFS) after machining features called "machining feature segmenf'(MFS) are extracted from the initial CAD model. Once MFS and DFS are identified, the process planner arranges them into a chain of processes and automatically generates machining information for each DFS and MFS. The goal of this paper is to present a framework for a process planning system for hybrid RP processes and to outline the geometric algorithms involved in developing such an environment.

  • In this paper,human body models have been manufactured by the use of rapid prototyping techniques, which are to be used for surgery planning in clinical practice. In this manufactacturing process, CT or MRI data of human bodies are prepared and the images are processed to obtain sectional contours. With these contours, three-dimensional surface triangulated models are constructed, which finally transformed to STL file for rapid prototyping. For this purpose, total service system for manufacturing of human body models is constructed by employing commercial softwares, and the related problems and process parameters are investigated

  • A new product development procedure that uses a rapid prototyping and 3D CAD has been suggested. By applying this procedure to the development of an aroma diffuser, considerable amount of development time and cost were reduced. Moreover, by using 3D CAD from the early design stage, the number of trial and error can be reduced.

  • Rapid Prototyping(RP) has been widely applied in designing and developing processes a new product. The functional requirements of a rapid prototyping system are high speed and high accuracy, and they depend on the operating parameters, some of which can be set by users. The accuracy is evaluated by dimensional errors and form errors of manufactured pars. A specially designed specimen with various features has been used for the accuracy evaluation. According to the Taguchi experimental design techniques, and orthogonal array of experiments has been set which has the least number of experimental runs to find the parametric effects. A laser scanner is used to obtain the point data of the parts and Surfacer is used to determine the lengths and angles. The conditions for the FDM manufacturing parametrs have been found.

  • Recently, the Rapid Prototyping System makes used of changing file format. The most problem is produced by this process. It is influenced by the precision of shape manufacturing. And It is most influenced by shrinkage rate within many elements influence the precision of 3D shape manufacturing. In result, the length strain in each axis cause at STL file transforming. It will compensate for utilizing the shrinkage rate.

  • In this paper, an experimental study of a hot forging process is carried out using plasticine and the die set manufactured with the aid of rapid prototyping. In order to manufacture the die set, Stereolithography Apparatus(SLA) which is most widely used rapid prototyping system is introduced. Turbine blade forging is performed using palsticine and the SLA prototype die set. Through the experiment, it has been shown that SLA prototype is suitable to the die set for the plasticine workpiece, and the formability and the forming load of turbine blade forging are predicted.
