  • Recently, as smartphones have rapidly come into wide use and various social networking services have grown, people perform a variety of interactions through the virtual and real world based on them. Usually, such services focus on easy formation of social links among users, supporting the exchange of simple messages among users on the networks. Twitter, one of such services used worldwide, supports short message service named Tweet and has over 200 million members signed up. n this paper, we propose techniques for supporting real-time group messaging based on the social network of Twitter and describe a smartphone group messaging system developed with the techniques. The system automatically forms a group that include a Twitter user and the followers of the user, supporting real-time group messaging among the group members. The developed system is composed of an XMPP protocol-based messaging server and smartphone client applications which perform real-time messaging based on the social network of Twitter. Twitter users can easily use the system utilizing Tweet messages, exchanging real-time messages with their followers within the groups instantly established on the XMPP server.

  • The BioPlace system is a web-based collaborative system which offers effective exchange of information and research activities among the genomic researchers. BioPlace supports collaborative works among the related group members through Personal Workspces and Team Workspces which are virtual spaces on the web. Jabber is an open messaging system based on XML, giving an efficient way of developing messaging services by providing various functionality for real-time communication and interoperability with other foreign messaging systems. In this paper, we have designed additional Jabber XML protocol to extend Jabber messaging system to be used as real-time communication methods on the BioPlace collaborative system. Also, according to the protocol, we have developed both the extended Jabber server and the BioPlace messenger client.

  • The second-generation mobile instant messaging (SMIM) proliferates with various relationship management functions: group chats, audio/video chats, file sharing, real-time location sharing, and nonverbal graphics, such as emojis and stickers. This study integrates the important but often overlooked affordances theory into innovation diffusion and proposes an SMIM continuance intention model. SMIM is a social affordance platform for users to develop new friendships and maintain their relationships. Integrated diffusion of innovation and affordance theoretical frameworks, this study investigates the influence of four factors on the success of using SMIM apps to improve friendship development and relationship management. Data were collected from 231 participants using a survey questionnaire in a public university in Taiwan. The findings confirm the effects of friendship development and relationship maintenance on the intention of users to continue using SMIM apps. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

  • PoC(Push-to-talk Over Cellular) is an integrated technology of group voice calls, video calls and internet based multimedia services. If a PoC user can not participate in the PoC session for various reasons such as an emergency situation, lack of battery capacity, then the user can use the PoC Box which has a similar functionality to the MM Box in the MMS(Multimedia Messaging Service). The RTSP(Real-Time Streaming Protocol) method is recommended to be used when there is a transmission session between the PoC box and a terminal. Since the existing VOD service uses a wired network, the packet size of RTSP-based VOD service is huge, however, the PoC service has wireless communication environments which have general characteristics to be used in RTSP method. Packet loss in a wired communication environments is relatively less than that in wireless communication environment, therefore, a buffering latency occurs in PoC service due to a play-out delay which means an asynchronous play of audio & video contents. Those problems make a user to be difficult to find the information they want when the media contents are played-out. In this paper, the following techniques and methods were proposed and their performance and superiority were verified through testing: cross-over dual reception buffering technique, advance partition multi-reception buffering technique, and on-demand multi-reception buffering technique, which are designed for effective picking up of information in media content being transmitted in short amount of time using RTSP when a user searches for media, as well as for reduction in playback delay; and same-priority packetization transmission method and priority-based packetization transmission method, which are media data packetization methods for transmission. From the simulation of functional evaluation, we could find that the proposed multiple receiving buffering and packetizing methods are superior, with respect to the media retrieval inclination, to the existing single receiving buffering method by 6-9 points from the viewpoint of effectiveness and excellence. Among them, especially, on-demand multiple receiving buffering technology with same-priority packetization transmission method is able to manage the media search inclination promptly to the requests of users by showing superiority of 3-24 points above compared to other combination methods. In addition, users could find the information they want much quickly since large amount of informations are received in a focused media retrieval period within a short time.
