  • To accommodate various mobile communication frequency bands, the study of metamaterial antennas have begun since the mid-2000s to solve the Trilemma problem between antenna gain-occupied bandwidth-size. As an adaptive reconfiguration function is required in a multi-array antenna system since 4G, the metamaterial array antenna using low-power variable elements has been used to change the basic structure of the antenna. Recently, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), which is made of metasurface with reconfigurability, has been studied to effectively cope with the randomly varying radio channels and be used for various purposes such as reflection/transmission/modulation. As a result of RIS-related patent information analysis in this study, it was confirmed that most of the patents are metamaterial antennas and metamaterial array antennas, but the metasurface antenna technology was in the early stages. Particularly, as the intelligent metasurface antenna is in a more initial stage, the investment to R&D of RIS is urgent to secure patent competitiveness in B5G and 6G.

  • We propose short packet communication in an underlay cognitive radio network assisted by an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) composed of multiple reconfigurable reflectors. This scheme, called the IRS protocol, operates in only one time slot (TS) using the IRS. The IRS adjusts its phases to give zero received cumulative phase at the secondary destination, thereby enhancing the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio. The transmitting power of the secondary source is optimized to simultaneously satisfy the multi-interference constraints, hardware limitations, and performance improvement. Simulation and analysis results of the average block error rates (BLERs) show that the performance can be enhanced by installing more reconfigurable reflectors, increasing the blocklength, lowering the number of required primary receivers, or sending fewer information bits. Moreover, the proposed IRS protocol always outperforms underlay relaying protocols using two TSs for data transmission, and achieves the best average BLER at identical transmission distances between the secondary source and secondary destination. The theoretical analyses are confirmed by Monte Carlo simulations.

  • In this paper, the scheme to activate the active elements of reconfigurable intelligent surface(RIS) is proposed. Recently, RIS has been studied as a technology that improves communication coverage and spectral efficiency in wireless communication system. RIS can adjust the phase and amplitude of the received signal, and can ensure better communication performance in areas with many obstacles, such as urban areas. However, due to RIS, the signal undergoes fading twice and performance decrease in communication. Recently, RIS using active reflection elements has been studied to solve these problems. However, if the entire RIS is used as an active reflection element, energy consumption increases. Accordingly, in this paper, we propose a system that utilizes some of the RIS reflective elements as active reflective elements and a scheme for selecting active reflective elements to be activated.

  • Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have gained significant attention in 5G and 6G wireless networks due to their high flexibility and low hardware costs. However, UAV communication is still challenged by blockage and energy consumption issues. Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) have emerged as a promising solution to these challenges, enabling improved spectral efficiency and reduced energy consumption by transmitting signals to users who cannot receive signals because of the obstacles. Many previous studies have focused on minimizing power consumption and data transmission delay through phase shift and power optimization. This paper proposes an algorithm that maximizes the sum rate by including bandwidth optimization. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

  • In order to improve spectral efficiency and reduce power consumption for reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted wireless communication systems, a joint design considering irregular RIS topology, RIS on-off switch, power allocation and phase adjustment is investigated in this paper. Firstly, a multi-dimensional variable joint optimization problem is established under multiple constraints, such as the minimum data requirement and power constraints, with the goal of maximizing the system energy efficiency. However, the proposed optimization problem is hard to be resolved due to its property of nonlinear nonconvex integer programming. Then, to tackle this issue, the problem is decomposed into four sub-problems: topology design, phase shift adjustment, power allocation and switch selection. In terms of topology design, Tabu search algorithm is introduced to select the components that play the main role. For RIS switch selection, greedy algorithm is used to turn off the RISs that play the secondary role. Finally, an iterative optimization algorithm with high data-rate and low power consumption is proposed. The simulation results show that the performance of the irregular RIS aided system with topology design and RIS selection is better than that of the fixed topology and the fix number of RISs. In addition, the proposed joint optimization algorithm can effectively improve the data rate and energy efficiency by changing the propagation environment.
