  • Surrface texturing of tribological application is another attractive technology of friction reducing. Also, reduction of friction is therefore considered to be a necessary requirement for improved efficiency of machine. In this paper attempts to investigate the effect of density for micro-scale dimple pattern using photolithography on bearing steel flat mated with pin-on-disk. We demonstrated the lubrication mechanism for a Stribeck curve, which has a relationship between the friction coefficient and a dimensionless parameter for lubrication condition. It is found that friction coefficient is depended on the density of surface pattern. It was thus verified that micro-scale dimple could affect the friction reduction considerably under mixed and hydrodynamic lubrication conditions from based on friction map. Lubrication condition regime has an influence on the friction coefficient induced the density of micro dimple.

  • Wear experiments were conducted using the SRV machine on the lubricated conditions of the several temperature and load. Oil samples were prepared by adding several friction modifiers into both paraffinic base oil and engine oil. Friction and wear characteristics of the oils were determined and are discussed in connection with the friction modifiers contained, the testing temperature and the load applied. From the study, it was found the MoDTC and the MoDTP, added into the engine oil, caused drastic increase in wear and had a tendendy to lose the friction-reducing property on some specific conditions of temperature and/or load, though they had the good property on other conditions. Ashless friction modifiers and dispersed $MoS_2$ investigated showed the good friction-reducing property, but the loads, where they became active, were different.

  • The tribological characteristic of several environmentally friendly lubricating base stocks was examined, and the effect of some commonly used additives on th tribological behavior of the lubricating oils was comparatively investigated on a four-ball machine. It has been found that the commercial additives including butene sulfide, wax chloride, zinc dialkyldithiophosphate and ashless P-N type agent helped to improve the friction-reducing and antiwear properties as well as the extreme pressure behavior. Non-toxic nanoscale $(CF)_x$ showed the best friction-reducing ability, though it registered relatively poor extreme pressure properties. The mechanism on friction of nano-scale material is discussed.

  • A linearly moving structure in the area where the friction force is dominant - such as ducts filled with grease in the nuclear power plant - experiences increase in friction since the contact surface gets larger as the structure proceeds. To solve this problem is critical for the pipe inspection robot to investigate further area and this makes the system more energy-efficient. In this paper, we propose a passively growing sheath that can be added to linearly moving structures using zipper mechanism. The mechanism enables the linearly moving structures to maintain rolling contact condition against external environment, which provides substantial reduction in kinetic friction. To analyze the effect of the mechanism's head shape, we establish a physical model and compare to the experimental results. Finally, we have shown that the passively growing sheath can be successfully applied to the pipe inspection robot for the nuclear power plant.

  • When low sliding velocities in the boundary lubrication range are operating, irregular movements frequently occur which are a result of the stick-slip phenomenon. Such slide motions are undesirable in precision machine tools, particularly with feed back systems used in numerical and adaptive control machine tools. Accordingly, this paper reports analytical and experimental studies in the stick-slip characteristic of machine tool feeding system. The main conclusions of this study are as follows; The tendency towards stick-slip effects may be reduced by; 1). Reducing the drop in friction coefficient in the Stribeck curve(on the rising part of the friction characteristic at higher sliding speeds, the system is stable all the time) 2). Reducing the transition velocity by the use of a higher viscosity lubricating oil. 3). Increasing the stiffness(Damping)and reducing normal load(Sliding mass) Therefore, the Critical velocity is decided from the above conclusions and in designing of machine tool, feed rates(sliding velocity)must be design the more than critical velocity.

  • Reducing friction torque of the oil hydraulic vane pump used as the power source of power steering system should consider friction torque including viscous and mechanical friction torque according to the changes of rpm and pressure. This paper analyzes the forces acting on the vane to reduce the friction torque of the vane of the hydraulic vane pump used for Hydraulic Power Steering(HPS) system, and futhermore, the forces according to the shapes of cam profiles are analyzed.

  • The aim of this paper is to investigate the effect of surface texturing on reduction friction and to understand the potential of friction reduction through micro-scale dimple to fabricate by photolithography on pin-on-disk test using flat-on-flat contact geometry. It was verify that the friction property with respect to the same pitch has been influence on the size of dimple under lubricated sliding contact. Also, we can recognize from Stribeck curve that the friction property has a connection with the size of dimple. It can explain a relationship between the friction coefficient and a dimensionless parameter for lubrication condition. The friction property has been an effect on the size of surface texture on reduction friction, not only because the density of dimple, but also because the ratio of diameter/pitch. This ratio of approximately 0.5 recommend under the tested friction condition. It suggested that the ratio of d/p is an important parameter for surface texture design.
