  • A new technology for refused derive fuel(RDF) utilization in circulating fluidized bed is under development. The RDF is tested in a bench scale circulating fluidized bed(CFB) combustor and its burning characteristics were investigated and collected as design parameters. The combustions were controllable and the HCl emission which is most important toxic emission were below 150 ppm at the exit of the combustor. The differences between conventional coal homing circulating fluidized bed boiler and the exclusive RDF boiler were studied and commercial scale co-generation CFB for RDF was designed.

  • In the present work, life cycle assessments (LCA) of various waste-plastic recycling methods (material recycling, refused derived fuel (RDF), recycling on furnace, and pyrolytic oil production) were carried out to investigate their impacts on the environment. Six types of impacts were considered. While the impact on global warming was found to be significant, the impact on others were negligible. The impact values on the global warming caused by the material recycling, RDF, and the recycling on furnace were negative, which implied that their impacts could be noticeably reduced when waste-plastic are used as an alternative to newly drawn plastics. The pyrolytic oil production, however, showed positive value, which may be due to the carbon dioxide produced during electric power generation. The pyrolytic oil production had the largest impact on the ozone layer destruction, which was due to ozone depleting substances produced from the process itself. These results can be used as a useful data for the enhancement of waste-plastic recycling.

  • Plastic product is increasing by the growth of its demand and most of refused plastics are incinerated or reclaimed. However, the refused plastic is not easily decomposed and has the environmental problem with its various toxic gas in case of incineration. Therefore, many countries such as USA, Japan, Germany and other developed industrial countries as well as Korea are interested in studying the recyclable resource of refused plastic. The macromolecular waste pyrolysis has the advantage of collecting of raw materials in high price and can at least get fuel gas or oil with high heat capacity. It also discharges low waste gas and low toxic gas including SOx, NOx and HCl heavy metals. However, pyrolyzed oil includes enough excess unsaturated hydrocarbons to form tar, which can cause the nozzle of engines to plug when pyrolyzed oil is used as fuel. Activated carbon was proven to have prominent adsorption capability among the other adsorbents that were mainly composed of carbon. This study examined the possibility of application in activated charcoal of its solid formation by analysing the feature of pyrolysis which is one of the chemical recycling methods and getting chemical analysis of the product and activated energy. Analyze the element of the oil produced by pyrolysis using GC-MS. The experiment of tar adsorption using fly-ash showed that fly-ash improved the optical intensity of pyrolyzed oil and decreased oxygen compounds in the pyrolyzed oil.

  • Waste plastic differs in its speed of combustion owing to its variety in composition as well as kinds of plastic. This study is aimed at examining the thermal weight analysis and determination of its kinetics in order to derive the design element in pyrolysis of RPF (Refused Plastic Fuel) as the plastic solid fuel. Based on the result of TGA (Thermogravimetric analysis), kinetic characteristics were analyzed by using Kissinger method which are the most common method for obtaining activation energy, and experimental conditions of TGA were set as follows: in a nitrogen atmosphere, gas flow rate of 20 ml/min, heating rate of $5{\sim}50^{\circ}C/min$, and maximum hottest temperature of $800^{\circ}C$. The method used for determining the property of waste plastic when thermally decomposed was thought feasible as the basic data in deciding the performance, design, and optimal operating condition of the reactor in the actual reactor.

  • Waste energy conversion to SRF (Solid Refuse Fuel) has the effects not alternative fossil fuel usage but also the reduction of greenhouse gas. But the direct burning of the SRF including a plastic waste generates air pollution problem like soot, dioxin, etc. so that an application of pyrolysis and gasification treatment should be needed. The purpose of this study is to supply a basic thermal data of the pyrolysis gasification characteristics in the plastic-rich SRF which are needed for developing the novel pyrolyser or gasifier. To do so, a bench-scale test rig was newly engineered, and then experiments were achieved for the production characteristics of gas, tar, and char. While SRF sample, gasification air ratio, holding time changed as 2 g, 0.691, 32 min respectively, the $H_2$ 1.36%, $CH_4$ 2.18%, CO 1.88%, $Cl_2$ 15.9 ppm, HCl 6.4 ppm were composed. Also light tar benzene $4.03g/m^3$, naphthalene $0.39g/m^3$, anthracene $0.11g/m^3$, pyrene $0.06g/m^3$, gravimetric tar $18g/m^3$, and char 0.29 g was formed.

  • Performances of power generation engine were investigated with syngas from RPF. A stoker type, multi-staged pyrolysis-gasification system, was employed for syngas generation and the syngas was refined with the sequential cleaning processes composed of a gas cooler, a bag filter and a wet scrubber. 20 kWe commercial syngas power generation engine was adopted to burn the cleaned syngas which is mainly composed of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and methane. The performance of the engine was tested with various syngas compositions and the results were compared to LNG case. Electric power output, exhaust gas temperature, and emission characteristics were measured, and the efficiency of engine generation was investigated as a function of load of power generation.

  • In the present work, a new separation system with rotating rakes has been developed to separate the film-based plastics from the recyclable materials, and environment assessment is also carried out during operation of the device. Capacity of the device was about 5.3 ton/hr at a rakes rotation speed of 26.0 rpm (the number of rakes in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd trials were 39, 52 and 48, respectively) and a belt conveyor speed of 38.5m/min, which satisfied the initial design capacity (5.0 ton/hr). Recovery ratio and purity of the plastic films were 92.6% and 96.5%, respectively at a rotation speed of 28 rpm. The levels of noise, vibration and particulate emission were below material standard regulatory limits. Plastic refused fuel (RPF) was also prepared with the recovered films. The calorific value and chlorine content of the prepared RPF were 9,740 kcal/kg and 0.18%, respectively which satisfy the first grade quality specification of the Korean RPF standard. As a result of this work, recovery of energy resources from the municipal solid waste is possible by adopting the developed separation device.

  • Oxy gasification was performed for the production of high quality syngas from the waste. $CO_2$ was used as reactant with $O_2$ for $CO_2$ gasification and greenhouse gas reduction. Therefore, gasification was performed at high temperature of $1000-1400^{\circ}C$. RPF was gasified in the thermobalance and 0.5 ton/day pilot plant gasifier. Weight variation with temperature and CO production by Boudouard reaction were studied for $CO_2$ gasification of RPF in thermobalance reactor. Syngas of high $H_2$ concentration was produced from oxy gasification in 0.5 ton/day pilot system, which showed appropriate $H_2$/CO ratio for the production of transport fuel and chemical products.
