  • A multistage hierarchical clustering technique, which is an unsupervised technique, was suggested in this paper for classifying large remotely-sensed imagery. The multistage algorithm consists of two stages. The 'local' segmentor of the first stage performs region-growing segmentation by employing the hierarchical clustering procedure of CN-chain with the restriction that pixels in a cluster must be spatially contiguous. The 'global' segmentor of the second stage, which has not spatial constraints for merging, clusters the segments resulting from the previous stage, using the conventional agglomerative approach. Using simulation data, the proposed method was compared with another hierarchical clustering technique based on 'mutual closest neighbor.' The experimental results show that the new approach proposed in this study considerably increases in computational efficiency for larger images with a low number of bands. The technique was then applied to classify the land-cover types using the remotely-sensed data acquired from the Korean peninsula.

  • The aim in this paper is to show how to extract scalp of a series of brain MR images by using region growing segmentation algorithm. Most researches are all forces on the segmentation of skull, gray matter, white matter and CSF. Prior to the segmentation of these inner objects in brain, we segmented the scalp and the brain from the MR images. The scalp mask makes us to quickly exclude background pixels with intensities similar those of the skull, while the brain mask obtained from our brain surface. We make use of connected threshold method (CTM) and confidence connected method (CCM). Both of them are two implementations of region growing in Insight Toolkit (ITK). By using these two methods, the results are displayed contrast in the form of 2D and 3D scalp images.

  • Conventional approaches for car number plate detection have dealt with those input images having similar sizes and simple background acquired under well organized environment. Thus their performance get reduced when input images include number plates with different sizes and when they are acquired under different lighting conditions. To solve these problem, this paper proposes a new scheme that uses the geometrical features of number plates and their topological information with reference to other features of the car. In the first step, those edges constructing a rectangle are detected and several pixels neighboring those edges are selected as the seed pixels for region growing. For region growing, color and intensity are used as the features, and the result regions are merged to construct the candidate for a number plate if their features are within a certain boundary. Once the candidates for the number plates are generated then their topological relations with other parts of the car such as lights are tested to finally determine the number plate region. The experimental results have shown that the proposed method can be used even for detecting small size number plates where characters are not visible.

  • In this paper, we proposed a lossless compression algorithm of medical images which is essential technique in picture archive and communication system. Mammographic image and magnetic resonance image in among medical images used in this study, proposed a region growing segmentation algorithm for compression of these images. A proposed algorithm was partition by three sub region which error image, discontinuity index map, high order bit data from original image. And generated discontinuity index image data and error image which apply to a region growing algorithm are compressed using JBIG(Joint Bi-level Image experts Group) algorithm that is international hi-level image compression standard and proper image compression technique of gray code digital Images. The proposed lossless compression method resulted in, on the average, lossless compression to about 73.14% with a database of high-resolution digital mammography images. In comparison with direct coding by JBIG, JPEG, and Lempel-Ziv coding methods, the proposed method performed better by 3.7%, 7.9% and 23.6% on the database used.

  • In hippocampal morphology Abnormalities, including unilateral or bilateral volume loss, are known to occur in epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease, and in certain amnestic syndromes. To detect such abnormalities in hippocampal morphology, we present a method that combines region growing and dynamic contour model to detect hippocampus from MRI brain data. The segmentation process is performed two steps. First region growing with a seed point is performed in the region of hippocampus and the initial contour of dynamic contour model is obtained. Second, the initial contour is modified on the basis of criteria that integrate energy with contour smoothness and the image gradient along the contour. As a result, this method improves fairly sensitivity to the choice of the initial seed point, which is often seen by conventional contour model. The power and practicality of this method have been tested on two brain datasets. Thus, we have developed an effective algorithm to extract hippocampus from MRI brain data.

  • Feature identification is one of the largest issue in high spatial resolution satellite imagery. A popular method associated with this feature identification is image segmentation to produce image segments that are more likely to features interested. Here, it is, proposed that combination of edge extraction and region growing methods for image segments were used to improve the result of image segmentation. At the intial step, an image was segmented by edge detection method. The segments were assigned IDs, and polygon topology of segments were built. Based on the topology, the segments were tested their similarities with adjacent segments using multivariate analysis. The segments that have similar spectral characteristics were merged into a region. The test application shows that the segments composed of individual large, spectrally homogeneous structures, such as buildings and roads, were merged into more similar shape of structures.

  • In this paper, we propose a new two-stage segmentation method for the effective object recognition which uses region-growing algorithm and k-means clustering method. At first, an image is segmented into many small regions via region growing algorithm. And then the segmented small regions are merged in several regions so that the regions of an object may be included in the same region using typical k-means clustering method. This paper also establishes similarity measurement which is useful for object recognition in an image. Similarity is measured by fuzzy system whose input variables are compactness, magnitude of biasness and orientation of biasness of the object image, which are geometrical features of the object. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed two-stage segmentation method and similarity measurement, experiments for object recognition were made and the results show that they are applicable to object recognition under normal circumstance as well as under abnormal circumstance of being.

  • Image segmentation technique is becoming increasingly important in the field of remote sensing image analysis in areas such as object oriented image classification to extract object regions of interest within images. This paper presents a new method for image segmentation in High Resolution Remote Sensing Image based on Improved Seeded Region Growing (ISRG) and Region merging. Firstly, multi-spectral edge detection was done using an entropy operator in pan-sharpened QuickBird imagery. Then, the initial seeds were automatically selected from the obtained multi-spectral edge map. After automatic selection of significant seeds, an initial segmentation was achieved by applying ISRG to consider spectral and edge information. Finally the region merging process, integrating region texture and spectral information, was carried out to get the final segmentation result. The accuracy assesment was done using the unsupervised objective evaluation method for evaluating the effectiveness of the proposed method. Experimental results demonstrated that the proposed method has good potential for application in the segmentation of high resolution satellite images.

  • Image segmentation is teh important step in image infromation extraction for computer vison sytems. Fuzzy clustering methods have been used extensively in color image segmentation. Most analytic fuzzy clustering approaches are derived from the fuzzy c-means (FCM) algorithm. The FCM algorithm uses th eprobabilistic constraint that the memberships of a data point across classes sum to 1. However, the memberships resulting from the FCM do not always correspond to the intuitive concept of degree of belongingor compatibility. moreover, the FCM algorithm has considerable trouble above under noisy environments in the feature space. Recently, the possibilistic C-mean (PCM) for solving growing for color image segmentation. In the PCM, the membersip values may be interpreted as degrees of possibility of the data points belonging to the classes. So, the problems in the FCM can be solved by the PCM. The clustering results by just PCM are not smoothly bounded, and they often have holes. So, the region growing was used as a postprocessing. In our experiments, we illustrated that the proposed method is reasonable than the FCM in noisy enviironments.

  • In the early twenty-first century, minimally invasive surgery is the mainstay of various kinds of surgical fields. Surgeons gave percutaneously surgical treatment of the screw directly using a fluoroscopic view in the past. The latest date, they began to operate the fractured carpal bone surgery using Computerized Tomography (CT). Carpal bones composed of wrist joint consist of eight small bones which have hexahedron and sponge shape. Because of these shape, it is difficult to grasp the shape of carpal bones using only CT image data. Although several image segmentation studies have been conducted with carpal bone CT image data, more studies about carpal bone using CT data are still required. Especially, to apply the software implemented from the studies to clinical fIeld, the outcomes should be user friendly and very accurate. To satisfy those conditions, we propose modified multi-seed region growing segmentation method which uses simple threshold and the canny edge detector for finding edge information more accurately. This method is able to use very easily and gives us high accuracy and high speed for extracting the edge information of carpal bones. Especially, using multi-seed points, multi-bone objects of the carpal bone are extracted simultaneously.
