  • Recently, construction of soil-reinforced segmental retaining walls which used geosynthetics are being increased day by day due to its construction efficiency, economic efficiency, and its aesthetic view. The conventional reinforced earth retaining wall has the connector system to fix the reinforcement and block However, this system may cause the crack of block and the rupture of reinforcement due to the stress concentration near the face of reinforced earth retaining wall In this study, the new connector system, which is able to allow the settlement of reinforcement, was applied to analyze the effect of connector system of reinforced earth retaining wall The connection strength tests and centrifugal tests for both the conventional reinforced earth retaining wall and the settlement reinforced earth retaining wall were performed to compare the results

  • The past studies on reinforced earth retaining wall have been mostly focused on the internal and external failure of reinforced earth retaining wall, and the research for external impact was limited on earthquake. However, the potential external impact such as vehicle collision to reinforced earth retaining wall near the road are increasing with development of roads. Therefore, in this study, the reinforced earth retaining wall was modeled by using LS-DYNA, which is a general purpose finite element program recognized for its reliability. The behavior of reinforced earth retaining wall by vehicle speed was analyzed with Ford single unit truck offered by NCAC (National Crash Analysis Center), which is 8 tons weight. In addition, in order to obtain stability of reinforced earth retaining wall for vehicle collision, the gravity retaining wall was applied at the bottom of reinforced earth retaining wall. With varying the height of retaining wall (0.5m, 1.0m, 1.5m), the numerical study was performed to analyze the stability and behavior of reinforced earth retaining wall.

  • In this study, the centrifugal tests were performed to evaluate the behavior of reinforced retaining wall that allows the settlement of reinforcement strip. To analyze the stability of reinforced retaining wall, which drives the settlement of reinforcement strip, the results were compared with the conventional reinforced retaining wall. In the centrifugal tests, the aluminum plate for the face was used and the aluminum foil was used as a reinforcement. The decomposed granite soil was adopted as a backfill. As a result, the settlement free reinforced retaining wall reached to the failure at 80g-level. In contrast, the conventional reinforced retaining wall was collapsed at 69g-level. It means that the settlement free reinforced retaining wall has the stronger stability than the conventional reinforced retaining wall. Also, vertical earth pressure of the settlement free reinforced retaining wall near the base of wall was higher 16% than that of the conventional reinforced retaining wall.

  • Retaining walls with reinforced earth have been constructed around the world. The use of reinforced earth is a recent development in the design and construction of earth-retaining structure. It is believed that reinforced retaining wall has some advantages which make construction quite simple basically. It wilt take short construction time relatively, comparing, fur example with reinforced-concrete retaining wall. In addition, low price and easy construction will be good attractive points in practical point of view. In this study, five field-tests monitoring data for lateral pressures on geogrid-reinforced retaining wall have been compiled and evaluated. Based on field-tests it is found that horizontal displacements of the facing was measured to be about 0.19∼0.76% and that the maximum tensile strains of reinforcement was evaluated to be about 0.66∼1.98%. The maximum tensile strains, measured from each site, do not reach 5% of the practical allowable strain of the geogrid. And also it is found that the lateral pressure distributions of reinforced-earth retaining wall are close to a trapezoid shape like a flexible retaining wall system, instead of a theoretical triangular shape.

  • The conventional reinforced earth retaining wall has the connector system to fix the reinforcement and block. However, this system defect may cause the crack of block and the rupture of reinforcement due to the stress concentration near the face of reinforced earth retaining wall. Hence, the new connector system which was able to allow the settlement of reinforcement was developed in this study and a test was carried out in the study area which is divided into the conventional reinforced earth retaining wall and reinforced Earth Retaining Wall driving the settlement. As the results of field monitoring in situ, the ratio of tensile force calculated at maximum value on contiguous portion of front block showed that the settlement type decreased the stress concentration near the face of front block greater than the conventional type.

  • This study aims to develop the program for design of a reinforced earth retaining wall. For this purpose, the external stability such as overturning, sliding and bearing capacity and the internal stability such as pull-out failure and tensile rupture of the reinforced earth retaining wall with the reinforcement spacing and the backfill inclination were examined. In addition, the calculated results from the developed program were verified by comparing with the simulated results based on the three-dimensional finite element analysis. It is expected that this program contributes to effective design of the reinforced earth retaining wall.

  • Recently, method of reinforced earth retaining wall have been proposed according to the material of facing, geosynthetic, construction method, and facing slope. However, the regulations such as the design method and detailed review items according to each construction method are not clear, and collapse due to heavy rainfall frequently occurs. In this study, to obtain a more stable technical approach in the design of reinforced earth retaining wall, the combination of the pullout failure of reinforced earth retaining wall and the optimal reinforcement ratio of height using reinforced earth retaining wall using a single strength reinforcement is assumed, optimum design of stiffener, optimal design of superimposed wall and optimum length ratio of reinforcement material of geosynthetics are proposed through safety factor according to reinforcement length ratio (L/H).

  • The damages to the reinforced earth retaining wall are divided into the front wall, foundation, drainage and upper slope. Damage of reinforced earth retaining wall is mainly caused by damage caused by drainage problem in the field. Recently, damage caused by snow removal materials have been occurred. Recently, the amount of snow removal materials used in winter is increasing due to abnormal weather. This chlorides degrades the concrete structure, where the reinforced earth retaining wall was no exception. There has recently been a case in which the front wall of the reinforced earth retaining wall deteriorates due to the chlorides introduced into the back filling portion through the drainage passage. Therefore, in this study, the cause of damages of reinforced earth retaining wall constructed in bridge abutment was analyzed, and an analytical study was conducted on the countermeasure. As a result, it was found that chlorides, which was introduced through the drainage system in the expansion joint of the bridge shift part or the upper structure, is infiltrated into the back part of the reinforced earth retaining wall and damaged. Therefore, it is suggested to improve the drainage system and restored the stiffness of the front wall.

  • In this study, we analyzed seismic behavior of reinforced earth retaining wall through the model test in order to characterize the behavior of reinforced earth retaining wall during earthquake. A scale model test was performed based on similitude ratio in accordance with law of similitude due to time and financial constraints on real scale modeling experiments. Seismic resistance characteristics of each seismic waves were analyzed by assessing the variations measured through excitation of the excited acceleration of 0.05g, 0.1g, 0.15g, and 0.2g. The results of this study, it would be important to obtain reasonable and abundant data on ground properties and seismic design in preparation for earthquakes when assessing the safety of block type reinforced earth retaining wall confined to model experiment. Acquisition of those data and systematic analytical techniques are considered likely to have a significant effect on the decrease of structure damage caused by earthquakes in Korea which has recently witnessed frequent occurrence of earthquakes.
