  • The aims of this study are to investigate rib geometries of reinforcing bars commercially available in Korea, Japan and USA, and evaluate bond performance using beam-end test specimens. Measurement of rib geometries of the bars include nominal area, average distance of rib, height of rib and an angle of rib perpendicular to bar axis. The result of this study show that rib height of Korean reinforcement bars are much less than those of Japan and USA resulting in the lowest value of relative rib area. Average bond strength of Korean D25 deformed bars is known as 9 % less than that of bars produced in USA. Bond strength depends primarily on the relative rib area. Bond strength of the high relative rib area bars produced in USA show 18% higher than that of bars produced in Korea.

  • The use of higher strength materials frequently requires the change of design provisions. Following to the previous researches, high strength reinforcing bars have a weak point about the development and splice length. Based on the previous research about high relative rib area, bond strength between reinforcing bars and concrete can be improved by the control of rib height and spacing. But, the code provisions do not include these specific shape of reinforcing bars. So, the purpose of this paper is to determine the effect of relative rib area to the bond strength. This paper describes the experiment and analysis of 5 beam-spliced specimens containing D25 with relative rib areas ranging from 0.073 to 0.17. The test results are also analyzed to make a design formula about the calculation of splice length on the consideration of relative rib area.

  • The effects of deformation properties on the bond of steel reinforcing bars to concrete are experimentally studies to expect the lap splice strength. Based on the previous research about relative rib area, lap splice strength between reinforcing bars and concrete can be improved by the control of rib height and spacing. This paper describes the testing and analysis of 15 beam-spliced specimens containing D25, D22, D19 with relative rib areas ranging from 0.066 to 0.162. The tests are analyzed to determine the effect of relative rib area(Rr) on the increase in bond strength. The tests also provide a preliminary indication of the effect of high relative rib area on the splice strength of uncoated bars.

  • Bond between reinforcing bars and the surrounding concrete is supposed to safely transfer load in the design process of reinforced concrete structures. Bar with high relative rib area will be studied further not only static load but also dynamic loading conditions to sustain better performance of bond for reinforced concrete structures under earthquake. To determine the bond behavior of high ribbed bars in beam and column joints under repeated loads, 31 pullout specimens were tested. Bond strength increases as relative rib area increases. Also the effect of relative rib area on bond is larger in cyclic loading than in monotonic loading.

  • The bond characteristics of two types hybrid FRP (fiber reinforced polymer) reinforcing bars with different rib geometry were analyzed experimentally. Two types of hybrid FRP. reinforcing bars such as spiral and cross type with different relative rib area were considered in this test. All testing procedures including specimens preparation, set-up of test equipments and measuring devices were made according to the recommendations of CSA Standard S806-02. From the test results, it was found' that cross type hybrid FRP reinforcing bars showed the higher bond strength than that of spiral type's due to the higher relative rib area.

  • Bond failure of reinforcing bar generally take place by splitting of the concrete cover as bond force between concrete and reinforcing bars exceeds the confinement of the concrete cover and reinforcement. However, the confinement force in practice has a limitation. Thus, the only variable is the bearing area corresponding to the change of bond force. In this study, to the evaluate anchorage strength of high relative rib area bars, hook bond test specimens are tested and the results are discussed. Higher rib height bars when bars are confined showed higher anchorage strength than lower rib higher bars.

  • The needs for high strength structural materials have recently increased, because construction and cost efficiencies are demanded by the costumers. But, the use of high strength reinforcing bars requires longer development and splice lengths compared to normal strength bars. This restriction may cause reduction in construction efficiency and require more complicated details. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the bond strength on the rib shape of reinforcing bars to decrease development and splice lengths of high strength reinforcements. Total of 5 simple beam specimens were tested, and the main test variable was a rib shape of reinforcing bars. Test data was analyzed in the viewpoint of bond strength, load-deflection relationship, and crack pattern. Test results indicated that the bond strength of high relative rib area reinforcing bars increased up to 11% compared to normal strength reinforcements. And the improved rib shape reinforcements, which were formed with high and low height rib, increased the bond strength up to 23% even though the relative rib area was same as the high relative rib area reinforcements. Serviceability performances such as deflection number of cracking, and maximum crack width were similar in all specimens, so it is safe to conclude that the improved rib shape reinforcements can be applied to the structural members.

  • The effects of bar deformation properties on bond of steel reinforcing bars to concrete are experimentally studied to predict the bond strength. Based on the previous research about high relative rib area, bond strength between reinforcing bars and concrete can be improved by the control of rib height and spacing. But, the equations in Korean code provisions to estimate development and splice length do not include these specifications of reinforcing bars. So the purpose of this paper is to determine the effect of relative rib area to the bond strength. This paper describes 2 kinds of experimental researches. Thirty beam-end specimens were tested to investigate the effects of bar size and relative rib areas ranging from 0.112 to 0.162. And, twelve lap-splice beam specimens were tested to the same variables. Each test results are normalized and compared with the proposed equations of ACI 408 committee. The results show that bond strength is increased as bar size and the relative rib area(Rr) increase. The distribution of flexural cracks and failure aspect do not appear to be affected by $R_r$.

  • Bond between reinforcing bar and surrounding concrete is supposed to transfer load safely in the process of design of reinforced concrete structures. Bond failure of reinforcing bar generally take place by splitting of the concrete cover as bond force between concrete and reinforcing bars exceeds the confinement of the concrete cover and reinforcement. However, the confinement force has a limitation. Thus, the only variable is the bearing angle corresponding to the change of bond force. Higher rib height bars possessing higher shearing resistance can maintain higher bearing angle and higher splitting resistance when bars are highly confined, and consequently higher bond strength, than lower rib higher bars. In this study, from the evaluate bond strength of high Relative Rib Area Bars Using beam-end test specimens are compared with the current provisions for development of reinforcement, and the improved design method of bond strength is proposed.

  • Bond between reinforcing bar and the surrounding concrete is made up of three components. There are chemical adesion, friction, and mechanical interaction between the rib of the bar and the surrounding concrete. bond of deformed bars depends primarily on the beraing of rib deformation anainst the surrounding concrete. The final objective of the study is to enhance structural stability, and workability thorough increasing the bond strength between deformed bar and surrounding concrete. The results of this study will be used to shorten bond and development length by $20{\sim}30$ percent and it will facilitate to use of high strength and high-relative rib area bars.
