  • Purpose: The conventional predicted MFTBF by military standard has a wide discrepancy to that of real-world operation, which leads to overstock and increase operation cost. This paper introduces a analyzing frame using operational reliability and cost data to overcome the discrepancy, and provides reliability improvement process employing the analyzing frame. Methods: This paper suggests Reliability-Cost Matrix (R-C Matrix) and Operational Reliability & Cost Index (ORCI) as a tool for reliability evaluation. Results: KOREIP(KAI's Operational Reliability Evaluation and Improvement Process) is developed employing Reliability-Cost Matrix and Operational Reliability & Cost Index. Conclusion: KOREIP provides a process and its activities based on Reliability-Cost Matrix frame. The process and activities leads reliability improvement of aerospace electronic equipments by means of categorizing and follow-up action based on the concept of frame.

  • Thruster break for aerogenerator performs a role that is stopping the rotor in case of emergency such as strong wind, system abnormality or maintenance check. In this study, failure analysis and test evaluation on the thruster break for aerogenerator are proposed, and the entire process to improve reliability of the product through design improvement is presented. The typical failure case is fatigue and wear, and failure cause on these are identified and improvement plan is presented. Lastly, reliability improvement is established to analyse test results before after the life test.

  • One solution to the estimation of product reliability during the development phase is to measure reliability improvement over time and compare this improvement to previous product development progress. This paper presents the reliability growth theory and applies it to some subsystems of vehicles during their design, development and prototype testing. The data presented illustrates explicitly the prediction of the reliability growth in the product development cycle. The application of these techniques is a part of the product assurance function that plays an important role in product reliability improvement.

  • Continuing and Developing the growth, the company should focus on 'time to market of high quality production' and 'cost down'. Due to the complexity of the production, reliability is being one of the important factor. In this study, in particular, focus on parts reliability test improvement about printer product and proceeded. Need test improvement for time to market that is developed, and reduce expense with test period that is required at Reliability Test time of new parts and should high quality level of product. Finally huge Failure Cost (F-COST) occurs because quality level of product drops if parts that accomplish product does not ensure reliability and this is associated by malfunction in marketplace.

  • Objective: Models for genomic selection assume that the reference population is an unselected population. However, in practice, genotyped individuals, such as progeny-tested bulls, are highly selected, and the reference population is created after preselection. In dairy cattle, the intensity of selection is higher in males than in females, suggesting that cows can be added to the reference population with less bias and loss of accuracy. The objective is to develop formulas applied to any genomic prediction studies or practice with preselected animals as reference population. Methods: We developed formulas for calculating the reliability and bias of genomically enhanced breeding values (GEBV) in the reference population where individuals are preselected on estimated breeding values. Based on the formulas presented, deterministic simulation was conducted by varying heritability, preselection percentage, and the reference population size. Results: The number of bulls equal to a cow regarding the reliability of GEBV was expressed through a simple formula for the reference population consisting of preselected animals. The bull population was vastly superior to the cow population regarding the reliability of GEBV for low-heritability traits. However, the superiority of reliability from the bull reference population over the cow population decreased as heritability increased. Bias was greater for bulls than cows. Bias and reduction in reliability of GEBV due to preselection was alleviated by expanding reference population. Conclusion: Cows are easier in expanding reference population size compared with bulls and alleviate bias and reduction in reliability of GEBV of bulls which are highly preselected than cows by expanding the cow reference population.

  • In general, weapon systems require very high reliability. Recently Korean defense reliability technologies growth rapidly. However, there are some matters of reform in reliability management, reliability assurance, and defense acquisition environment, etc. In this paper, we propose the reliability development plan for Korean defense system as follows; 1) reliability improvement programs for each acquisition stages, 2) reliability improvement methods for logistics support, 3) reliability improvement programs for developers and manufacturers, 4) reform matters for the defense acquisition law, 6) establishment of defense reliability assessment center and defense reliability committee.

  • The market for used products is becoming more competitive and dealers of used products use warranty to promote sales as well as to provide assurance to customers. Offering warranty results in additional costs associated with warranty servicing. This cost can be reduced through actions such as overhaul and upgrade that improves the reliability of the item. This is worthwhile only if the cost of improvement is less than the reduction in the warranty servicing cost. This paper deals with two models to decide on the reliability improvement strategies for used items sold with FRW policy.

  • Objective: In practical breeding, selection is often performed by ignoring the accuracy of evaluations and applying economic weights directly to the selection index coefficients of genetically standardized traits. The denominator of the standardized component trait of estimated genetic evaluations in practical selection varies with its reliability. Whereas theoretical methods for calculating the selection index coefficients of genetically standardized traits account for this variation, practical selection ignores reliability and assumes that it is equal to unity for each trait. The purpose of this study was to clarify the effects of ignoring the accuracy of the standardized component trait in selection criteria on selection responses and economic weights in retrospect. Methods: Theoretical methods were presented accounting for reliability of estimated genetic evaluations for the selection index composed of genetically standardized traits. Results: Selection responses and economic weights in retrospect resulting from practical selection were greater than those resulting from theoretical selection accounting for reliability when the accuracy of the estimated breeding value (EBV) or genomically enhanced breeding value (GEBV) was lower than those of the other traits in the index, but the opposite occurred when the accuracy of the EBV or GEBV was greater than those of the other traits. This trend was more conspicuous for traits with low economic weights than for those with high weights. Conclusion: Failure of the practical index to account for reliability yielded economic weights in retrospect that differed from those obtained with the theoretical index. Our results indicated that practical indices that ignore reliability delay genetic improvement. Therefore, selection practices need to account for reliability, especially when the reliabilities of the traits included in the index vary widely.

  • Hydrostatic bearing improves performance and life time of a product by avoiding solid friction and reducing viscosity friction with the help of creating pressure equilibrium between two faces doing relative motion. This study suggests failure analysis and test evaluation for a ball joint that adopts the hydrostatic bearing and introduces the entire process to improve reliability of the product by design improvement. A typical failure is growth of friction torque by solid friction, and its failure cause is determined and the improvement is proposed. Finally, reliability improvement is established by analysis of the results of before and after acceleration test.
