An Efficient Bilateral Remote User Authentication Scheme with Smart Cards

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient bilateral remote user authentication scheme with smart cards. Our scheme ensures both-way authentication, so that any attempt of the adversary to affect the secure communications between the authentication server and the user could not be successful. We also present a brief analysis of our proposed scheme and show that it is well-resistant against the known attacks in remote user authentication process.

  • Remote user authentication is a method, in which remote server verifies the legitimacy of a user over an common communication channel. Currently, smart card based remote user authentication schemes have been widely adopted due to their low computational cost and convenient portability for the mutual authentication. 2009 years, Wang et al.'s proposed a dynamic ID-based remote user authentication schemes using smart cards. They presented that their scheme preserves anonymity of user, has the feature of storing password chosen by the server, and protected from several attacks. However, in this paper, I point out that Wang et al.'s scheme has practical vulnerability. I found that their scheme does not provide anonymity of a user during authentication. In addition, the user does not have the right to choose a password. And his scheme is vulnerable to limited replay attacks. In particular, the parameter y to be delivered to the user is ambiguous. To overcome these security faults, I propose an enhanced authentication scheme, which covers all the identified weakness of Wang et al.'s scheme and an efficient user authentication scheme that preserve perfect anonymity to both the outsider and remote server.

  • Recently because of development of remote network technology, users are able to access the network freely without constraints of time and space. As users are getting more frequent to access the remote server in a computing environment, they are increasingly being exposed to various risk factors such as forward secrecy and server impersonation attack. Therefore, researches for remote user authentication scheme have been studying actively. This paper overcomes the weaknesses of many authentication schemes proposed recently. This paper suggests an improved authentication scheme that protects user's anonymity with preserving variable more safe and also provides forward secrecy.

  • Recently, Due to the rapid development of the internet and IT technology, users can conveniently use various services provided by the server anytime and anywhere. However, these technologies are exposed to various security threat such as tampering, eavesdropping, and exposing of user's identity and location information. In 2016, Nikooghadam et al. proposed a lightweight authentication and key agreement protocol preserving user anonymity. This paper overcomes the vulnerability of Nikooghadam's authentication protocol proposed recently. This paper suggests an enhanced remote user authentication protocol that protects user's password and provides perfect forward secrecy.

  • A remote user authentication scheme is a two-party protocol whereby an authentication server in a distributed system confirms the identity of a remote individual logging on to the server over an untrusted, open network. In 2005, Liao et al. proposed a remote user authentication scheme using a smart card, in which users can be authenticated anonymously. Recently, Yoon et al. have discovered some security flaws in Liao et al.'s authentication scheme and proposed an improved version of this scheme to fix the security flaws. In this article, we review the improved authentication scheme by Yoon et al. and provide a security analysis on the scheme. Our analysis shows that Yoon et al.'s scheme does not guarantee not only any kind of authentication, either server-to-user authentication or user-to-server authentication but also password security. The contribution of the current work is to demonstrate these by mounting two attacks, a server impersonation attack and a user impersonation attack, and an off-line dictionary attack on Yoon et al.'s scheme. In addition, we propose the enhanced authentication scheme that eliminates the security vulnerabilities of Yoon et al.'s scheme.

  • In the multi-server environment, remote user authentication has a very critical issue because it provides the authorization that enables users to access their resource or services. For this reason, numerous remote user authentication schemes have been proposed over recent years. Recently, Lin et al. have shown that the weaknesses of Baruah et al.'s three factors user authentication scheme for multi-server environment, and proposed an enhanced biometric-based remote user authentication scheme. They claimed that their scheme has many security features and can resist various well-known attacks; however, we found that Lin et al.'s scheme is still insecure. In this paper, we demonstrate that Lin et al.'s scheme is vulnerable against the outsider attack and user impersonation attack, and propose a new biometric-based scheme for authentication and key agreement that can be used in the multi-server environment. Lastly, we show that the proposed scheme is more secure and can support the security properties.

  • Recently, the rapid development of network technology has enabled people to use various services on the internet. However, the existing password-based user authentication system used in the internet environment requires a password table, which is a potential security threat as it could be leaked by an insider. To solve this issue, remote user authentication methods that do not require a user password table have been proposed. Regarding remote user authentication using a smart card in particular, various methods have been suggested to reduce expenses and to improve stability and efficiency, but the possibility of impersonation attacks and password-guessing attacks using information saved in a user's smart card still exist. Therefore, this study proposes a remote user authentication method that can safeguard against impersonation attacks and password guessing attacks, by analyzing weak points of conventional methods and creating a smart card's ID and password that are based on the user's ID and password.

Enhanced Password-based Remote User Authentication Scheme Using Smart Cards

  • Secure and efficient authentication schemes over insecure networks have been a very important issue with the rapid development of networking technologies. Wang et al. proposed a remote user authentication scheme using smart cards. However, recently, Chen et al. pointed out that their scheme is vulnerable to the impersonation attack and the parallel session attack, and they proposed an enhanced authentication scheme. Chen et al. claimed that their scheme is secure against the various attacks. However, we have found that their scheme cannot resist the parallel attack and the stolen smart card attack. Therefore, in this paper, we show the security flaws in Chen et al.'s scheme and propose an improved remote user authentication scheme using tamper-resistant smart cards to solve the problem of Chen et al.'s scheme. We also analyze our scheme in terms of security and performance.

An Untraceable ECC-Based Remote User Authentication Scheme

  • Recent evolution in the open access internet technology demands that the identifying information of a user must be protected. Authentication is a prerequisite to ensure the protection of user identification. To improve Qu et al.'s scheme for remote user authentication, a recent proposal has been published by Huang et al., which presents a key agreement protocol in combination with ECC. It has been claimed that Huang et al. proposal is more robust and provides improved security. However, in the light of our experiment, it has been observed that Huang et al.'s proposal is breakable in case of user impersonation. Moreover, this paper presents an improved scheme to overcome the limitations of Huang et al.'s scheme. Security of the proposed scheme is evaluated using the well-known random oracle model. In comparison with Huang et al.'s protocol, the proposed scheme is lightweight with improved security.

Improvements of a Dynamic ID-Based Remote User Authentication Scheme (동적 ID 기반 원격 사용자 인증 스킴의 보안성 개선)

  • Recently, many user authentication schemes using smart cards have been proposed to improve the security weaknesses in user authentication process. In 2009, Wang et al. proposed a more effective and secure dynamic ID-based remote user authentication scheme to improve the security weakness of Das et al.'s scheme, and asserted that the improved scheme is secure against independent of password in authentication phase and provides mutual authentication between the user and the remote server. However, in this paper, we analyze the security of Wang et al. scheme and demonstrate that Wang et al.'s scheme is vulnerable to the man-in-the-middle attack and the off-line password guessing attack. In addition, we show that Wang et al. scheme also fails to provide mutual authentication. Accordingly, we propose an improved scheme to overcome these security weakness even if the secrete information stored in the smart card is revealed. Our proposed scheme can withstand the user impersonation attack, the server masquerading attack and off-line password guessing attack. Furthermore, this improved scheme provides the mutual authentication and is more effective than Wang et al.'s scheme in term of the computational complexities.
