  • Residential broadband networks (RBN) are quickly evolving from xDSL/Cable networks to FTTH services with lOOMbps bandwidth. With the high-speed Internet services, subscribers tend to use web, multimedia, game or file sharing applications. Therefore, performance of RBN is important to the quality of services for users. Typically, Internet service providers (ISPs) are providing their RBN performance results that are measured by subscribers with the dedicated measurement tools. However, they do not make their results public to people. In order to obtain the performance results measured by users, we have to induce a lot of subscribers, which will take a lot of cost and time. Monarch, that is used in this paper, could provide the 3rd party measurement method without the help of ISPs and subscribers. With the extensive experiments through Monarch, we have shown that 3rd party measurement results are not much different from those of user-initiated measurement. In addition, we have observed that bandwidth is around $80{\sim}90Mbps$ and RTT is less than 30ms in FTTH services provided by three major Korean ISPs.

  • Residential network is the hybrid technology of wireless, Ethernet, Bluetooth and RF to the internet via broadband connection at home to facilitate the convenient, safe and pleasant daily lives of home user with various home network services regardless of device, time and place. For ubiquitous development more devices will be wireless and most of them will be roaming. Since these roaming devices carry private information of daily life of residential users, the interaction among the roaming devices of residential network must be secure. This paper presents to secure registration of roaming devices using IP Security (IPSec) Protocol Suite without the need to trust foreign agents.

  • Earlier efforts on optical access concentrated on the design of PONs for the collection and distribution portion of the access network. In these networks the optical hardware in the RN is very simple, but a multiple access protocol is needed for upstream traffic control. On the other hand, the role of communications is already well established in the office environment. With the advent of cheap, affordable broadband communications and the increasing complexity of consumer electronics, it seems natural to extend the network into the home. As the application of Home Area Network is ever increasing, we therefore consider connectivity between access network and home network which generates various traffic to design MAC protocol over residential network. Global-FIFO is quite simple and allows dynamic upstream bandwidth assignment on the basis of a request-and-permit mechanism. It has good bandwidth efficiency and being cell-based, it does not consider the various traffic from home network. In this paper, we design and analyze the new MAC resource assignment algorithm called MQ-FIFO (Multiple Queue-FIFO) that provides good performance under the environment of ATM-PON and Home Network.

  • It is generallyaccepted that broadband access technologies will play an important role in the National Information Infrastructure. However, the provision of direct fibers to residential and small business customers has always been considered a challenge. To accelerage the provision of Broadband Access Facilities, alternatibe paths could be identified and actaivated in parallel. In this paepr, we present an overview of the alternative access technologies focusing on xDSL, FTTx, HFC, HFR, and suggest the modeling of the access netetwork systems which is using of the technologies. Also to investigate the economics of each access systems, we derve the numerical equations which is summed up the al parameter including the labor cost of the model system. The proposed equation has a variable which is the cell size (or subsciber clusters) and calculate the real cost values which is normalized by the copper cable unit cost. From the numerical resutls, we conclude that the economic access method to provide these broadband capabilities is depended on the subscriber penetration, the patterns of subscriber distribution density and existing communication infrastructures. It can be expected that our analytical model and equations provides an elegant solution to choose the optimal broadband access technologies to residential and small business customers.

  • In the initial deployment stage of optical access networks, optical network systems and optical fiber cables have been provided mainly for commercial buildings or users in KT. According to the demand of residential users who expect to subscribe broadband multimedia services as high bit rate services, the optical access networks get closer to the residential users as FTTCab or FTTH So, it is very important to install optical access networks economically and effectively because that the total cost and usability of optical fiber cables depends on that. Especially, one of characteristics in access networks is the possibility of variation on services demands and technology evolution. Also access networks must be prepared for the final deployment, FTTH. Therefore, the designing and planning of optical access networks are coming to be very important activity for most of telecommunications service providers.

  • A home network is a collection and connection of many electronic and electrical devices in home in order to make daily life comfortable, entertaining and safe. The convergence of Ethernet and wireless technology to a single shared broadband connection in residential gateway is the key feature of the home network. This kind of heterogeneous network has realized the need to implement different QoS mechanisms. Basically, in this paper we propose to integrate IP QoS and Wireless QoS mechanisms for QoS assurance in home network. This paper compares the combination of PCF with two queuing algorithms Low Latency Queuing (LLQ) and Custom Queuing (CQ) and concludes that the combination of CQ and PCF performs best for home network.

  • Femtocells are cellular access points that connect to a mobile operator's network using residential DSL or cable broadband connections. They have been developed to work with a range of different cellular standards including CDMA, GSM and UMTS. Like legacy base station, the frequency accuracy and phase alignment is necessary for ensuring the quality of service (QoS) for applications such as voice, real-time video, wireless hand-off, and data over a converged access medium at the femtocell. But, the GPS has some problem to be used at the femtocell, because it is difficult to set-up, depends on the satellite condition, and very expensive. So, some techniques are discussed to alternate with the legacy GPS system. NTP, PTP, Synchronous Ethernet use the ethernet to synchronize distributed clocks in packet networks. AGPS support reliable position information than the legacy GPS in poor signal conditions. But, These method also have some problems. So, hybrid timing method like A-GPS+PTP and TV+GPS was developed to make up the weak point of GPS. This paper introduces the each method and compare each other and y propose much better solution for timing synchronization at the Femtocell

Abstract When residential users access core network via ATM over xDSL, DSL Access Multiplexer(DSLAM) which processes ATM cells transmitted from customer premises, is indispensable. In order to fulfill original goal of residential broadband integrated service, DSLAM should be able to perform ATM layer traffic management, mainly QoS(Quality of Service) provision. In this paper, we propose an efficient and simple cell scheduling scheme applicable to access multiplexer such as DSLAM. According to simulations for performance evaluation, the proposed cell scheduling scheme is able to supply bandwidths conforming to traffic descriptors of the connections. Moreover it is verified that the proposed scheme has a CLR based connection discrimination capability.

  • More than 100 Mbps rate is needed in the UBcN for a subscriber to receive broadband traffics with multi-channel like UDTV or 3DTV. Although the optical fiber is recently deployed for the FTTH, the UTP is the most widely used medium and will be used in UBcN age. Network providers may consider the 1000BASE-T or the vectorized VDSL if they adopts the UTP in the place where does not have optical fibers. But UTP should be expanded because 1000BASE-T and vectorized UTP needs 4 and 3 pairs cable, respectively while residential region has not exceeding 2 pair UTP cable. To solve the problem, we propose a 500BASE-T technology using 2 pairs UTP in this paper. The technology introduces a rate adaptation sublayer and a SERDES sublayer above and under the PCS, respectively. The rate adaptation sublayer is compatible for the GMII. Also, if we modify the SERDES sublayer, the technology can easily obtain 250BASE-T with 2 pairs UTP. We implement such functions with FPGA and analog board and verify the function of rate adaptation and symbol vector synchronization, and effective transmission rate by experiments. In particular, we show that link efficiency is increased by enable control in the rate adaptation sublayer.
