  • Soil resistivity has a relation with the corrosion of underground buried structures as a water pipeline, gas pipeline and power cable casing. And it's a main factor in the cathodic protection and earth design. This paper presents soil resistivity maps each depth through measuring the soil resistivity in Kwachon, Kyonggi province. Also examines the soil resistivity characteristics on a change of temperature, moisture content and ion content in the laboratory.

  • Thermoelectric power and resistivity are measured for the perovskite $LaNi_{1-x}Ti_xO_3$ ($x{\leq}0.5$) in the temperature range 77 K - 300 K. The measured thermoelectric power of $LaNi_{1-x}Ti_xO_3$ ($x{\leq}0.5$) increases linearly with temperature and is represented by A + BT. The x = 0.1 sample showed metallic behavior, the x = 0.3 showed metal and insulating transition around 150 K, and x = 0.5 showed insulating behavior the over the whole temperature range. The electrical resistivity of x = 0.1 shows linear temperature dependence over the whole temperature range and $T^2$ dependence. On the other hand, the electrical resistivity of x = 0.3 shows a linear relation between $ln{\rho}$ and $T^{-1/4}$ (variable range hopping mechanism) in the range of 77 K to 150 K. For x = 0.5, the temperature dependence of resistivity is characteristic of insulating materials; the resistivity data was fitted to an exponential law, such as ln(${\rho}/T$) and $T^{-1}$, which is usually attributed to a small polaron hopping mechanism. These experimental results are interpreted in terms of the spin polaron (x = 0.1) and variable range hopping (x = 0.3) or small polaron hopping (x = 0.5) of an almost localized $Ni^{3+}$ 3d polaron.

  • The thermoelectric power and dc conductivity of $La_{2/3+x}TiO_{3-{\delta}}$ (x = 0, 0.13) were investigated. The thermoelectric power was negative between 80K and 300K. The measured thermoelectric power of x = 0.13 increased linearly with increased temperatures and was represented by $S_0+BT$. The x = 0 sample exhibited insulating behavior, while the x = 0.13 sample showed metallic behavior. The electric resistivity of x = 0.13 had a linear temperature dependence at high temperatures and a T3/2 dependence below about 100K. On the other hand, the electric resistivity of x = 0 has a linear relation between $ln{\rho}/T$ and 1/T in the range of 200 to 300K, and the activation energy for small polaron hopping was 0.23 eV. The temperature dependence of thermoelectric power and the resistivity of x = 0 suggests that the charge carriers responsible for conduction are strongly localized. This temperature dependence indicates that the charge carrier (x = 0) is an adiabatic small polaron. These experimental results are interpreted in terms of spin (x = 0.13) and small polaron (x = 0) hopping of almost localized Ti 3d electrons.

  • A long-term resistivity monitoring system has been developed for saturated cores in room temperature and humidity condition. A 3-channel water-pump continuously drops the water onto the top of saturated core sample surrounded by shrinkable tube as well as on the paper filters of the electrodes at both sides of the core sample, by which one can monitor the resistivity changes with maintaining full saturation of the rock core for a week or longer. Monitoring the resistivity changes has been performed with 3 kinds of rock samples including biotite gneiss, andesitic tuff, and shale for 9 days using the system. Consequently, it is proposed two hypothesis that conversion speed of temperature coefficient has close relation to the thermal properties of the rock sample and that the ratio of resistance between dry and saturated conditions for a rock sample can be related to the effective porosity of the sample. The ratio between dry and saturated resistance for the three rock types are 48, 705, and 2, while effective porosity was 3.7%, 3.3%, and 13.0%, respectively.

  • Electrical resistivity of 23 core samples from Ulleung Island at dry or saturated condition has been measured along with dry density and effective porosity, and the relations between the properties has also been discussed. Upper and lower bounds of electrical resistivity at room temperature can be provided by the dry- and saturated-resistivity, respectively. Injecting nitrogen gas to the pore space at the very end of drying process can prevent humid air from getting into the pore space, so that measurement of dry-resistivity can be less affected by humidity in the air. Dry density and porosity have very close correlation; the ratio between increase of porosity and the decrease of density showed distinct relation to the rock types, such that basaltic rocks showed higher ratio while trachytic rocks showed lower. Saturated resistivity showed close correlation to density and effective porosity of the rock sample, while dry resistivity didn't.

  • On the soft carbon made from petroleum coke, it was found that the graphitization began at around 2,000$^{\circ}C and crystallite diameters were almost saturated at 2,400$^{\circ}C., and that the molecular planes were difficult to arrange into an ideal graphite lattice in spite of the saturation of crystallinity by heat treatment temperature. On the hard carbon made from cross-linked thermosetting plastics, phenol-formaldehyde filler and phenol-benzaldehyde binder, it was very difficult to rotate the molecular planes into a regular directional arrangement and into a consecutive order corresponding to the large graphite crystals. In addition to the above mentioned crystallinity, it was also determined in relation to electric conductivity, resistivity, hardness and apparent density of carbons.

  • An Inductive high-Tc superconducting fault current limiter using YBCO superconducting ring in the secondary part has many advantages in power networks. It is based on the appearance of resistivity in the superconductors and this paper is studied on the relation between the resistivity and the temperature of superconductors. In many other devices using superconductors, it is important to prohibit the superconductors from quenching for the protection of the whole system, or at least the superconductors.ᢁ

  • The microstructure and electrical characteristics of ZnO-Bi2O3 ceramics containing 5mol% Bi2O3 have been studied in relation to sintering temperature and mode. The distribution and thickness of Bi2O3 intergranular layer was varied with sintering temperature and mode. Intergranular layer was more homogeneous with increasing sintering temperature, when sintering by direct heating and rapid cooling mode showed the best distribution of intergranular layer. These microstructural changes affected electrical characteristics directly, at 140$0^{\circ}C$ and C mode obtained high value of electrical resistivity and nonlinear exponent. Varistor voltage decreased with increasing sintering temperature, increased with decreasing holding time at high temperature. Barrier voltage obtained by calculation was about 1.5V.

  • Using facing target magnetron sputtering (FTMS) with a graphite target source, carbon nitride thin films were deposited on silicon and glass substrates at different substrate temperatures to confirm the tribological, electrical, and structural properties of thin films. The substrate temperatures were room temperature, 150℃, and 300℃. The tribology and electrical properties of the carbon nitride thin films were measured as the substrate temperature increased, and a study on the relation between these results and structural properties was conducted. The results show that the increase in the substrate temperature during the fabrication of the carbon nitride thin films increased the hardness and elastic modulus values, the critical load value was increased, and the residual stress value was reduced. Moreover, the increase in the substrate temperature during thin-film deposition was attributed to the improvement in the electrical properties of carbon nitride thin film.

  • MoSi$_2$heating elements were fabricated using MoSi$_2$, powder prepared by SHS. Their apparent density, electrical resistivity, bending strength and victors hardness were measured as a function of sintering temperature, time and the amount of ceramic additives. The additives were A1$_2$O$_3$, SiO$_2$and bentonite which were added as a plastisizer. The electrical resistivity of MoSi$_2$decreased with the increase in the apparent density as expected. It decreased when the additives were added and the increase was the largest for the case of SiO$_2$. The bending strength and hardness decreased when the grain size becomes larger which is opposite to the expectation from the Hall-Petch type relation. Instead, they showed inverse proportionality with the volume fraction of pores probably in an exponential manner. The strength and hardness also decreased with the additives.
