Influence of Rice Water Weevil (Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus) Damage on Growth and Grain Quality in Rice (벼물바구미 피해정도가 벼 생육 및 미질에 미치는 영향)

  • A field experiment was conducted to investigate the influence of water weevil damage on growth and grain guality in rice. Plant height was shortened, number of tillers per hill decreased and maximum tillering stage delayed in damaged field by rice water weevil. Heading date was delayed by 1-2days, culm lenght shortened, panicle lengthened, number of panicles decreaced, number of panicles per spikelet increased, ripened grain ratio decreased in damaged field by rice water weevil. Yield per 10a was decreased 4-22% in damaged field compared with that in undamaged field by rice water weevil, yield loss in late transplanting (June 23) was larger than that in early transplanting (May 20). Imperfect kerml rice, especially green kernel rice, was increased in damaged field by rice water weevil.

  • Seasonal occurrence in each stages of rice water weevil, Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus Kuschel, was studied in paddy field transplanted on May 25, Siehung, 1989. The peak of overwintered adults was late May an that of newly emerged adults was early August. Oviposition occurred in late May and late June and its peak was observed on early June. Larvae were observed from early June to early August and pupation occurred from early July to late August. The first adults of newly emerged rice water weevil was observed on early July and its emergence peak was early August.

Feeding Plants of Rice Water Weevil (벼물바구미의 가해식물)

  • Feeding plants of rice water weevil(RWW) adult and larvae were observed. Thirteen families including 104 species were found as host plants of RWW adult, and 74 species of them were newly identified as its host. Thmedia triandra var. japonica, Luzula capitata, Agropyron tsukushiense var. ransiens, and Zoysiama crostachya were most favorable hosts of adult RWW. Host plants for larvae were 9 species of weeds including Cperus nipponicus, Eleccharis kuroguwa, Sagittaria trifolia, and Claviceps purpurea in the rice paddy fields.

  • The rice water weevil, Lissorhoptrus oryzophillus are major pests of aquatic rice plant throughout the country. In field, we examined efficacy of Steinernema carpocapsae and Xenorhabdus nematophilus against rice water weevil, Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus. Steinernema carpocapsae showed 71-74.2% mortality after 15days in the field. Also symbiotic bacteria Xenorhabdus nematophilus isolated from Steinernema carpocapsae showed 33.3-58.3% mortality after 15days at vat against rice water weevil, Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus.

Insect Pests Occurrence and Control in Organic and Conventional Rice Paddy Field (유기 및 관행벼 재배지 충해 발생 및 방제에 관한 연구)

  • Insect pests were surveyed in 5 Rice paddy field areas of Organic paddy field and conventional paddy field. At the each rice-growth period, the occurrence rate of 'Small brawn plant hopper was high at the case of duck raising and rice bran farming on middle stage of rice paddy field in Gang-Hwa region. The occurrence rate of Rice water weevil was high at the conventional paddy field on the early stage of rice paddy field in Yeo-Ju region. In the Hong-Seong region, the occurrence rate of 'Rice water weevil' and 'Green rice leafhopper' was high at the 'duck raising compare to the conventional farming on the early stage of rice paddy field. According to each period, the occurrence rate of insect was high at late stage of rice paddy field, and there was no difference between each region. It showed high-occurrence tendency at duck pasture farming rice paddy field. The major natural enemies were spiders and parasites. Theridiidae and Linyphiidae were highly occurred on the conventional farming rice paddy field in Hong-Seong. Web builders containing Theridiidae, Linyphiidae and Tetragnathidae was occurred more than wandering spiders containing Lycosidae, Clubionidae and Pisauridae at various regions, and then occurrence of spiders was different at the various regions but was not different at each farming system.

Arthropod Community in the Rice Fields with Different Irrigating Water Quality in Banwol, Kyonggi-do (경기도 반월지역에서의 농업용수 수질에 따른 수도포장내 절지동물군집)

  • The effects of three different irrigating water qualities(clean water, life sewage and animal sewage) on the pattern of arthropod communities in the rice fields were investigated at Banwol, Kyonggi-do, mid-western part of Korea from 1994 to 1996. The total density of arthropod was highest in the rice field which was irrigated with clean water(clean water field), and the arthropod community was mainly composed of aphids and collembolans. Each functional group was found in the order of 'pests>non-pests>natural enemies' in its density. The dominant taxa in the pest group were aphids, planthoppers(Delphacidae), leafhoppers(Cicadelidae) and rice water weevil(L. oryzophilus). In the non-pest group collembolans, non-biting midges and dipterans were main arthropods, and in the natural enemy group Araneae was the dominant taxon. In the early growth stage of rice plant the dominant functional group was pests, and in the mid growth stage both the pest and the natural enemy group became dominant. But in the late growth stage none of the functional group was dominant over the other functional groups. The densities of spiders were much more higher in the clean water field than in the other fields. And through all the growth stages of rice plants the density of spiders in clean water field kept increase in contrast to the others. The species composition of spiders in the life sewage field was similar to that in the animal sewage field, but in the clean water field it was different from the other two fields.

Some effects of rice weevil (Sitophilus oryzae L.) on the moisture contents of polished rice (쌀바구미(Sitophilus oryzae Linne)의 현미함수량에 미치는 영향)

  • A. The increases moisture contents of grain at R.H $75\%,\; and\; 28^{\circ}C$ 1) The moisture contents of polished rice were $0.4\%,\; 1 \%,\; 3.3\%$ higher than control after 4weeks in which had been infested with 100, 200, 500 individuals of weevil at the beginning. respectively. 2) The greatest moisture contents of polished rice was $16.26\%$ for 500 individual infested grain and the lowest one was $14.86\%$ for the 100 individual weevil infested grain after 4 weeks. 3) The increases in moisture contents of grain were proportionally greater with the size of the weevil population. B. Changes in moisture contents of polished rice at the three levels of cylinder which contain 3kgs of grain and 1000 weevils were infested at the beginning of the experiment. 1) The moisture contents of the grain at all the levels of the cylinder which was not infested with weevil, were consistantly decreased in 12 weeks. 2) The moisture contents of the grain at all the levels of the cylenders which had been infested with 1000 weevils at the beginning of the experiment, were increased except top lovel, that were $15.6\%$ for middle, $41.55\%$ for the bottom levels after 12 weeks. 3) The moisture contents of the grain were greater toward bottom in both weevil infested grain and in control. 4) The moisture content increase might be caused by the respiration of the weevils and deterioration of the grain by microorganisms. 5) There were no tendency to confine the weevils at any definite levels, but as the deterioration of the grain goes on, the weevil moved to top levels of cylinders. 5) The decreases in moisture contents of the grain at the top levels of the cylinders might be caused by diffusion of water to the environment. 7) The differences in temperature at three levels of the cylinder from enviroment were little or negative in control but were greater and positive. and the bottom were higher than top in experimental cylinders. 8) The increases of temperature might be caused by the respiration of the weevil and microorganisms.

Analysis of junction site between T-DNA and plant genome in Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus resistance GM rice (벼물바구미 (Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus) 내충성 GM 벼에서 T-DNA와 게놈의 인접부위 분석)

  • Four transgenic rice lines harboring insect-resistant gene cry3A showed ideal field performances characterized by high considerable resistance to rice water weevil (Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus Kuschel). In this study, we estimated the insertion number of foreign genes, and analyzed the flanking sequences of T-DNAs in rice genome. As a result, T-DNA of BT12R1 line was inserted in exon region of rice chromosome 10. Two copies of T-DNAs were inserted in line BT12R2. BT12R3 line was analyzed at only left border flanking sequence. BT12R4 line was confirmed one copy of foreign gene insertion at the position 24,516,607 ~ 24,516,636 of rice chromosome 5, accompanied by a deletion of 30 bp known genomic sequences. This intergenic position was confirmed none of expressed gene and any deletion/addition of T-DNA sequence. In conclusion, these molecular data of rice water weevil resistant Bt rice would be used to conduct the biosafety and environment risk assessment for GM crop commercialization.
