  • Recent advancement in technology raises fundamental questions: "what is right technology for human?", "how can we build machines for human welfare?" Interactive technology and soft engineering deals with these problems. Personal robotics for the elderly seems to be a major area in which to explore these ideas. We can start by asking "what are inhumane human conditions to be resolved by technology?" Issues lain robotics for the elderly are described and desirable roles for the robots in such applications are presented. Interdisciplinary science approach is proposed to successfully implement this technology for the elderly.

  • In this article art performing applications of industrial dual-arm robots are introduced. It was real collaboration among robot researchers and artist. Artist designed the performance to use dual-arm robot. Robot researchers collaborated with artist by providing robotic constraints and configuring robot motion. Two art performances were configured with two industrial dual-arm robots. In both performance robots carry objects to be used as moving screens. Both performances rely on the high power and high precision of robots. In addition human-like appearance make those performances be familiar to public.

  • In this paper, important design parameters for parallel kinematic robots are defined, paying special attention to machining errors which may cause kinematic errors at the end effector of a robot. The kinematic effects caused by each design parameter, as well as their upper/lower limits, are analyzed here. To do so, we have developed a novel software program to compute kinematic errors by considering its defined design parameters. With this program, roboticists designing parallel kinematic robots can understand the important design parameters for which upper/lower allowances have to be strictly controlled in the design process. This tactic can be used for the design of high-speed, parallel kinematic robots to reduce the design/manufacturing costs and increase kinematic precision.

  • Our study introduces an improved modular agricultural platform to provide convenience to agricultural workers. We upgrade the platform design in three parts, namely, by adding a 458 pattern tire, electricity control, and four-wheel steering function, to improve the platform performance. Results showed that the upgrades enhanced the platform performance and reduced its overall weight as compared with the existing platform. To demonstrate the performance of our improved platform, we conducted five types of experiments with respect to the climbing angle, variable width, attitude control, speed, and obstacle passing.

  • We developed a platform that was capable of autonomous steering in a furrow environment. It was developed to autonomously control steering by recognizing the furrow using a laser distance, three-axis tilt, and temperature sensor. The performance evaluation indicated that the autonomous steering success rate was 99.17%, and it was possible to climb up to 5° on the slope. The usage time was approximately 40 h, and the maximum speed was 6.7 km/h.

  • In this paper, as a research on autonomous steering for agriculture, a sensor module for furrow recognition was developed through a low-cost distance sensor combination. The developed sensor module was applied to the vehicle, and when driving in a furrow curve, the autonomous steering success rate was 100% at a curvature of 20 m or more, and 70% at a curvature of 15 m or less. The self-steering success rate according to the ground condition showed a 100% success rate regardless of soil, weeds, or mulching film.
