Spray Characteristics of the Rotating Fuel Nozzle with Orifice Geometry (회전연료노즐 형상변경에 따른 분무특성)

  • An experimental study was conducted to understand spray characteristics of rotating fuel nozzle by using high speed rotational system. The experimental apparatus consist of a fuel injection system, high speed rotational system, and acrylic case. The test is performed with several diameters and number of injection orifices. Spray characteristics such as droplet size and velocity are measured by PDPA(Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer). From the test results, we could understand the spray characteristics of rotating fuel nozzle with orifice number and diameter.

  • The study was performed to understand combustion characteristics of the slinger combustor. Liquid fuel is discharged radially outwards through injection holes drilled in the high speed rotating shaft. We observed atomizing characteristics with variation of fuel nozzle rotating speed by using PDPA system. The mean drop diameter highly depends on fuel nozzle rotating speed. In KARI combustion test facility, Ignition and combustion tests were performed by using real scale combustor. In the test results, ignition and combustion efficiency were increased according to increasing fuel nozzle rotating speed. The measured radial temperature distribution at the combustor exit shows stable and fairly good distribution.

  • An experimental study was performed to understand ignition characteristics of gas turbine combustor with rotating fuel injection system. Liquid fuel applied to the inner surface of rotating fuel nozzle which was driven by high speed electrical motor is flung away by centrifugal forces. The real scale combustor and test rig was manufactured and tested under atmospheric condition in KARl combustion test facility. From the test results, this combustor ignition characteristics are highly dependent upon fuel nozzle rotating speed. Futhermore, combustor exit gas temperature was rapidly changed by increasing or decreasing the fuel nozzle rotating speed.

  • An experimental study was conducted to observe the spray characteristics for different flow rates and rotating speeds of a rotating fuel nozzle of a slinger combustor. The water spray ejected from the nozzle orifice was visualized using a high-speed camera and a light source. It was confirmed that the atomization was improved, as the flow rate decreased and rotating speed increased. The characteristic maps for the spray characteristics and performance parameters showed that the aerodynamic Weber number and the liquid-air momentum flux ratio were associated with the liquid primary breakup, and the liquid-air momentum flux ratio and Rossby number were closely correlated with the liquid ejection mode.

  • The spray characteristics of the rotating fuel injection system were investigated. The special test rig was devised to get the spatial and momentary droplet information. This experimental apparatus consists of a high-speed motor, a shaft, a rotating fuel nozzle and an acrylic case. Spray droplet size and velocity were measured by PDPA(Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer) and instantaneous velocity field was measured by 1'IV (Particle Image Velocimetry) system. At the same time, spray visualization was performed by using ND-YAG laser-based flash photography. From these two different laser diagnostic techniques, we could get spatial and instantaneous spray information fur rotating fuel injection system. The results presented in this paper indicate that spray characteristics such as droplet size, velocity and spray pattern were strongly influenced by rotational speed.

  • In the micro turbojet engine less than 350kw power class, it is not easy to find out the good atomization fuel injector with good spray quality. However conceptually, rotating fuel injection system can give high atomization quality by only the centrifugal force of a high speed rotating shaft of the engine without high-pressure fuel pump. With this motivation, we manufactured very small rotating fuel injector of 40 mm diameter and performed under a variety of injection orifices. We measured droplet size, velocity and spray distribution by the PDPA(Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer) system. Also spray was visualized by using high speed camera. From the test results, we could understand that the length of liquid column from the injection orifice is mainly controlled by the rotational speeds. Furthermore, droplet size(SMD) is decreased with the rotational speeds and is influenced by the diameter of the injection orifice and liquid film thickness.

  • An experimental study was performed to understand spray characteristics of the V type rotating fuel nozzle with orifice diameters by using high speed rotational system. The experimental apparatus consist of a high speed rotational system, fuel injection system and acrylic case. The droplet size and velocity were measured by PDPA(Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer) and spray was visualized by using Nd-Yag laser-based flash photography. From the test results, droplet size is reduced with increasing orifice diameter up to the critical value. When increasing orifice diameter over than this critical value, droplet size is not decreased with increasing the orifice diameter. This is due to the irregular distribution of the liquid sheet around the inner surface of injection orifice.

  • The spray characteristics of the high speed rotating fuel injection system were studied. The five variants of rotating fuel nozzle were used by spray test. The diameter of single column injection orifices are varied from 1 mm, 2 mm, 3 mm, 4 mm and 5 mm. We constructed high speed rotating test rig and measured droplet size by PDPA (Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer) system. Also spray was visualized by using high speed camera. In the test results, we could understand that length of liquid column from the injection orifice is mainly controlled by the rotational speeds. SMD is decreased with increasing injection orifice diameter and rotational speeds. Furthermore, from the comparison to the theoritical calculation, we confirmed that SMD is influenced by the liquid film thickness which is formed inner surface of injection orifice.

  • In order to complement the drawbacks of quartz crucible such as fragile-like break and melt-leakage through open slit nozzle, a new PFC system has been developed using a common graphite crucible and plugging system. The u melt is fed on to the rotating a roll through slit nozzle by self-gravity. The new equipment was designed and manufactured successfully. An effort for optimizing all related parameter has been made. Then using the optimized parameters about 10 meters u foil having very thin thickness, which meets the target thickness of 130 ${\mu}m$ and enough width more than 60 mm could be made. The thickness homogeneity set improved, due to the lower eddy flowing of the melt flow the self-gravity feeding system.
