  • Wigner-Ville distribution which is a time-frequency analysis has a fatal drawback, when the signal has multiple components. This is the cross-talk and often causes a neagative value in the distribution. Wingner-Ville distriution is an expression of power, therefore the cross-talk must be avoided. Smoothing the Wigner-Ville distribution by convoluting it with a window, is most commonly used to reduce the cross-talk. There can be infinite number of distributions depending on the windows. But, the smoothing reduces resolution in time-frequency plane; this motives to design a more effective window in reducing cross-talk while remaining resolution. The domain in which the cross-talk and legitimate components can be easily distinguished, is the ambiguity function. In the ambiguity function domain, the legitimate components appear as linear lines passing through the orgine. But, the cross-talk is widely distributes in the ambiguity function plane. Based on the relative distributions of cross-talk and legitimate components, rotating window can be designed to minimize cross-talk. Applying the rotating window to the ambiguity function corresponds to smoothing the Wigner-Ville distribution. Therefore, the effects of rotating window is estimated in terms of the bias error due to smooting the Wigner-Ville distribution. By applying the rotating window, not only the Wigner-Ville distribution but also its properties are changed. The properties of the new distribution are checked, in order to complete analyzing the rotating window.

  • Wigner-Ville distribution has been recognized as a useful tool and applied to various types of mechanical noise and vibration signals, but its limitation which mainly comes from the cross-talk has not been well addressed. The cross-talk takes place for a signal with multiple components, simply because the Wigner-Ville distribution is a bilinear transform. The cross-talk often causes a negative value in the distribution. This cannot be accepted for the Wigner- Ville distribution, because it is an expression of power. Smoothing the Wigner-Ville distribution by convoluting it wih a window, is most commonly used to reduce the cross-talk. There can be infinite number of distributions depending on the windows. In this paper, we attempted to develop a distribution which is the best or the optimal in reducing the cross-talk. This could be possible by employing the ambiguity function. For a general signal, however it is difficult to express the ambiguity function as a mathematically closed form. This requires an appropriate modeling to make such expression possible. We approximated the Wigner-Ville distribution as a sum of linear segments. In the ambiguity function domain, the legitimate components are reflected as linear lines passing through the origin. Every lines has its own length and slope. But, the cross-talk is widely distributed in the ambiguity function plane. Based on this realization, we proposed a two-dimensional window which is in fact 'rotating window', that can eliminate cross-talk component. The rotating window is examined numerically and is found to have a better performance in reducing the cross-talk than conventional windows, the Gaussian window.

  • Major noise source in high speed rotating optical disk drives (CD and DVD-ROM) arises due to the high-speed airflow produced from the upper and lower surfaces on the rotating disk. The present paper deals with the experimental approach how to identify the noise source based on the fundamental principles of aeroacoustics and to propose a reduction method of the noise source. The CD-ROM device is composed of disk, window tray, motors at the bottom place and electronic circuit plate also located below the window plate. The window is cut in the tray to read the disk information using the optical device located below the tray and moving linearly from the center of the disk through the end of the disk. All components are possible noise generators. Experimental studies were carried out in the anechoic room with various design modifications, such as tray geometry, window size and hole location on tray, to identify the major aerodynamic noise source and significant reductions of the aerodynamic noise were obtained.

  • A study on dynamic characteristics of rotating disks in magneto optical disk drives is presented. Natural frequencies of rotating disks are investigated experimentally and numerically. The frequency response and critical speeds of the ASMO disk are discussed. The characteristics of airflow around the disk and their effects on disk vibrations are also investigated. It is found that the numerical calculation of the natural frequencies of rotating disks agrees well with the experimental results. The airflow around the disk in the cartridge affects the characteristics of the disk vibrations to reduce the modal frequencies of the disk. The experiment shows that negative vertical offsets of the disk in the cartridge possibly increase the vibration amplitudes. As being influenced by the geometry of the cartridge, the rotation of the disk causes an asymmetric airflow in the presence of window.

  • Wind tunnel test for Electro-Optical Targeting System(EOTS) has been conducted to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics, especially the torque characteristics of the rotating parts to insure the enough actuator power during the actual operation. The influence of EOTS's complex configuration, such as the observation window, has been investigated by comparing with the results of the simplified models made of half sphere and the cylinder. It has been found that the position of the observation window of EOTS has an effect on surface pressure distribution and the torque characteristics of the rotating observation part.

  • Crevices between window and window frame cause not only heat losses but also serve path to sound transmission and infiltration of fine dusts that are harmful to humans. There were many efforts in the past to eliminate these crevices but because of the windows' indispensable function of opening and closing, it was an unsolvable problem. In this study, a new type sliding window is developed by applying horizontally rolling wheels to implement a surface sealing which is excellent for enhancing air tightness. To evaluate the feasibility of the newly developed window, forces for opening and closing, durability and air tightness were testet according to Korean Testing Standards. Force for opening a 2000 N window is 30 N. It endured 100,000 cycles of opening and closing. Infiltration was $0.00m^3/(m^2h)$ for a pressure difference of 10 Pa. Since this window has few moving parts, it has favorable features of low cost and few breakdown.

  • A small water phantom (dual-window phantom) was developed to improve the output measurement efficiency of medical linacs. This phantom is suitable for determining the quality index and output dose for high-energy photon beams. The phantom has two opposite windows and two independently rotating axes. The two axes measure the tissue phantom ratio (TPR) and the percentage depth dose (PDD) simply without requiring chamber movement by rotating the phantom around its axis. High-energy photon beams from a Co-60 irradiator and a medical linac were used to evaluate the phantom. The measured quality index is in good agreement with the reference values; the measured and reference values are within 0.2% of each other for the Co-60 gamma rays and within 1.4% for 6 and 10 MV X-rays. This phantom is more practical for routine output measurements, resulting in the prevention of potential human errors.

  • This paper proposes a scan code method for obstacle avoidance of mobile robot. Obstacles detected in a circular window are converted to scan codes and then to the steering angle. The safe rotating radius is obtained by the scan code to avoid the collision between robot and obstacle and. the minimum distance for rotation is calculated. Effectiveness of the method is illustrated through simulations, and the results show that the proposed method can be efficiently implemented to an unknown environment.
