  • SNOMED CT is a standard clinical terminology to provide a standardized way to record and manage clinical records for EMR or EHR. The structure of SNOMED CT is very complex because of huge expressive power and its internal design mechanism. Although there are some SNOMED CT browsers for browsing and searching SNOMED CT concepts, they are less effective because they do not consider such complexity of SNOMED CT. This paper depicts problems of current SNOMED CT browsers and analyze SNOMED CT dataset. Then, this paper analyze requirements of SNOMED CT browser which improves searching and selecting of appropriate clinical terms.

  • SNOMED CT browser is a browsing tool for searching clinical terms in SNOMED CT which is a standard terminology set used worldwide. The search result view of previous browsers merely list up candidate terminologies. The problem is that most of users become confused about how to select an appropriate term from the list. This leads serious waste of medical recoding cost. This paper discusses characteristics of SNOMED CT dataset and proposes a novel design of enhanced result view by restructuring the results using relationships of SNOMED CT concepts. Using the proposed scheme, medical doctors or officers can select appropriate terms more efficiently and can reduce overall recording time.

  • The SNOMED CT browser is a system for searching and browsing of a huge volume of medical terminologies included in SNOMED CT. Previous browsers provide a simple list-up of search results while they are similar from each other. It leads to a serious confusion in selecting an appropriate term among them. This paper presents a novel browser system which provides a comparative search of search results. To do this, the proposed system includes a terminology search module, a topology search module, and a sub-graph generation module for the results.

  • SNOMED CT browser is a search browser which searches and browses terminologies include in SNOMED CT. These terminologies shows a structural form using a variety of relationships. However, previous browsers merely lists up substring-matched search results, rather than using structural characteristics. This paper proposes and implements a browser system which shows a sub-graph of search results enabling structural search of the results. The implementation includes searching of terminologies based on substring-matching, tree-based graphical organization of the search results, and history of concept views.

  • SNOMED CT is a standard clinical terminology to provide a standardized way for recording and managing of clinical records in EMR systems. However, because of its huge expressive power, it is very difficult to consistently record patients' status such as diagnosis and procedure. The reason is that one clinical meaning can be expressed in variety of ways using multiple terminologies and vice versa. This paper proposes a novel requirement of effective search browser for SNOMED CT terminologies by analyzing duplicated or similar terminologies.

  • This paper discusses the incompleteness of the SNOMED CT and proposes a noble metric which evaluates similarity among sibling nodes as a method to address this incompleteness. SNOMED CT encompasses an extensive range of medical terms, but it faces issues of ontology incompleteness, such as missing concepts in the hierarchy. We propose a noble metric for evaluating similarity among nodes within a node group, composed of multiple sibling nodes, to identify missing concepts, and identify groups with low similarity. Analyzing the similarity of sibling node groups in the March 2023 international release of SNOMED CT, the average similarity of 29,199 sibling node groups, which are sub-concepts of the clinical finding concept and are consist of two or more sibling nodes, was found to be 0.81. The group with the lowest similarity was associated with child concepts of poisoning, with a similarity of 0.0036.

  • To write a medical record using SNOMED CT standard clinical terminologies, it is necessary to find and select an appropriate terminology from the huge volume of terminologies within short time. Using previous SNOMED CT search browsers, it is very difficult to select appropriate one from search results since they provide a simple list-up of similar candidate terminologies. This paper proposes a novel search browser which supports effect searching of clinical terminology by utilizing characteristics of SNOMED CT. The proposed system provides a simplified tree-view representing hierarchical structures of search results which enables fast selection of appropriate terminology from the search results. Design and Implementation of the system proves effectiveness of the proposed approach.

  • SNOMED CT, which is a standard clinical terminology, imposes an ambiguity problem of terminology selections caused by its huge expressive power and structural complexity. It is very difficult to distinguish similar terms and to select an appropriate term among them within short consultation hours. This paper analyzes the ambiguity problem and proposes a novel scheme for comparative search of similar terms. The proposed scheme provides a differential view of similar terms by defining a "is-not-a" relationship based on the hierarchical structure of the concepts. The result of this work improves the utilization of SNOMED CT such that medical officers can efficiently select an appropriate term among similar terms which represents patient's status adequately.

  • SNOMED CT is a standard clinical terminology which is to efficiently record, manage and utilize clinical records during clinical processes. However, huge expressive power of SNOMED CT makes it difficult to select appropriate terms during short consultation hours. In addition, true meaning of a written record using the terminology may be misunderstood or even distorted since one clinical meaning could be expressed in a variety of ways. This paper analyzes such known problems in a database point of view, and presents effective selection methods of similar terminologies to mitigate the problem.

  • This is a methodological study to develop standards for human body coordinate clinical terminology system. The Standard was developed through four stages: Stage 1 - research plan was developed through literature review and data collection. Stage 2 - preliminary standard was created. Stage 3 - the standard was revised in accordance with the consultation of experts through seminars. Stage 4 - Final version of the standard was presented after verification of the content level. 2D human body images are expressed as x, y axes, and 3D images are expressed as x, y, z axes. Concepts and definitions of coordinates were preassembled into FSN, synonyms and preferred names of SNOMED CT. The latter combination was defined through 18 relationships. The average index was 4.01 for the content validity of the developed relationship standard. This research suggests that subsequent standards should be developed for other parts of the human body such as the brain, organs, and tissues. Also, it suggests that methodological research should be continued to increase the utilization of the standard in clinical practice.
