  • A spatial data warehouse is a system to support decision making using a spatial data cube. A spatial data cube is composed of a dimension table and a fact table. For decision support using this spatial data cube, the concept hierarchy of spatial dimension and the summarized information of spatial fact should be provided. In the previous researches, however, spatial summarized information is deficient. In this paper, the spatial aggregation for spatial summarized information in a spatial data warehouse is proposed. The proposed spatial aggregation is separated of both the numerical aggregation and the object aggregation. The numerical aggregation is the operation to return a numerical data as a result of spatial analysis and the object aggregation returns the result represented to object. We provide the extended struct of spatial data for spatial aggregation and so our proposed method is efficient.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of task conditions (physical similarity between the spatial product and the reference space, presentation place of the spatial product) on children's spatial representation. The participants consisted of 40 3-year-olds and 40 4-year-olds. The results of this study are as follows. Both 3-year-olds and 4-year-olds were capable of a greater degree of spatial representation when there was a high level of physical similarity between the spatial product and the reference space, and when the presentation place of the spatial product was in the reference space. 4-year-olds were capable of more accurate spatial representation than 3-year-olds. There was no significant difference in the children's spatial representation depending on the type of spatial product (scale model, map). The results revealed that the physical similarity between the spatial product and the reference space and the presentation place of the spatial product are essential in young children's spatial representation. Additionally, the results indicated that spatial representation of children develops gradually from when they are three to when they turn four.

  • Recently, with the development of collecting methods of spatial data, the spatial data is produced, circulated, and used in various fields of industry and research. To manage the mass spatial data efficiently, the researches on extension of the existing commercial DBMS, such as ESRI's ArcSDE or Oracle's Oracle Spatial, is making progress actively. However, the usage of the extension of the commercial DBMS Incurs an additional expense and causes an interoperability problem due to differences in spatial data types and spatial operators. Therefore, in this paper, we developed an OpenGIS Spatial Interface for Oracle, which supports a standard interface by fellowing the "Simple Features Specification for SQL" proposed by OGC(Open Geospatial Consortium). Since the OpenGIS Spatial Interface provides all spatial data types and spatial operators proposed in "Simple Features Specification for SQL", users can manage mass spatial data of Oracle efficiently by using the standard interface without additional expense. In addition, we proved that the OpenGIS Spatial Interface is superior to the Oracle Spatial in the response time through the performance evaluation.

  • It can be advantage as well as disadvantage to use the spatial weight matrix in a spatial regression model; it would benefit from explicitly quantifying spatial relationships between geographical units, but necessarily involve subjective judgment while specifying the matrix. We took Incheon City as a study area and investigated how the fitness of a spatial regression model changed by constructing various spatial weight matrices. In addition, we explored neighborhood segmentation in the study area and analyzed any influence of it on the model adequacy of two basic spatial regression models, i.e., spatial lagged and spatial error models. The results showed that it can help to improve the adequacy of models to specify the spatial weight matrix strictly, that is, interpreting the neighborhood as small as possible when estimating land price. It was also found that the spatial error model would be preferred in the area with serious spatial heterogeneity. In such area, we found that its spatial heterogeneity can be alleviated by delineating sub-neighborhoods, and as a result, the spatial lagged model would be preferred over the spatial error model.

  • Recently, because of the need to wide-area spatial data for spatlal analysis and military purpose, there are increasing demand for the efficient retrieval of mass spatial data in Geographic Information System(GIS) fields. Oracle Spatial and ESRI ArcSDE, that are GIS Software, are to manage mass spatial data stably and to support various services but they are inefficient to retrieve mass spatial data because of the complexity of their spatial data models and spatial operations. Therefore, in this paper, we developed a spatial middleware that can retrieve mass spatial data efficiently. The spatial middleware used Oracle which is a representative commercial DBMS as a repository for the stable management of spatial data and utilized OCCI(Oracle C++ Call Interface) for the efficient access of mass spatial data in Oracle. In addition, various spatial operating methods and the Array Fetch method were used in the spatial middleware to perform efficient spatial operations and retrieval of mass spatial data in Oracle, respectively. Finally, by comparing the spatial middleware with Oracle Spatial and ESRI ArcSDE through the performance evaluation, we proved its excellent retrieval and storage performance of mass spatial data.

  • Recently, the necessity of accessing spatial data from remote computer via network has been increased as distributed spatial data have been increased due to their size and cost. Many methods have been used in recent years for transferring spatial data, such as socket, CORBA, HTTP, RPC, FTP, etc. In this paper, we propose spatial clearinghouse components to access distributed spatial data sources via CORBA and Internet. The spatial clearinghouse components are defined as OLE/COM components that enable users to access spatial data that meet their requests from remote computer. For reusability, we design the spatial clearinghouse with UML and implement it as a set of components. In order to enhance interoperability among different platforms in distributed computing environment, we adopt international standards and open architecture such as CORBA, HTTB, and OpenGIS Simple Features Specifications. There are two kinds of spatial clearinghouse: CORBA-based spatial clearinghouse and Internet-based spatial clearinghouse. The CORBA-based spatial clearinghouse supports COM-CORBA bridge to access spatial data from remote data providers that satisfy the OpenGIS Simple Features Specification for OLE/COM using COM and CORBA interfaces. The Internet-based spatial clearinghouse provides Web-service components to access spatial data from remote data providers using Web-browser.

  • This paper proposes a qualitative reasoning approach for the spatial configuration of mechanisms that could be applied in the early phase of the conceptual design. The spatial configuration problem addressed in this paper involves the relative direction and position between the input and output motion, and the orientation of the constituent primitive mechanisms of a mechanism. The knowledge of spatial configuration of a primitive mechanism is represented in a matrix form called spatial configuration matrix. This matrix provides a compact and convenient representation scheme for the spatial knowledge, and facilitates the manipulation of the relevant spatial knowledge. Using this spatial knowledge of the constituent primitive mechanisms, the overall configuration of a mechanism is described and identified by a spatial configuration state matrix. This matrix is obtained by using a qualitative reasoning method based on sign algebra and is used to represent the qualitative behavior of the mechanism. The matrix-based representation scheme allows handling the involved spatial knowledge simultaneously and the proposed reasoning method enables the designer to predict the spatial behavior of a mechanism without knowing specific dimension of the components of the mechanism.

  • Spatial structures have the different dynamic characteristics from general rahmen structures. Therefore, it is necessary to accurately analyze dynamic characteristics and seismic response for seismic design of spatial structure. Keel arch structure is used as an example structure because it has primary characteristics of spatial structures. In case of spatial structures with different ground condition and time lag, multiple support excitation may be subjected to supports of a keel arch structure. In this study, the response of the keel arch structure under multiple support excitation and with time lag are analyzed by means of the pseudo excitation method. Pseudo excitation method shows that the structural response is divided into two parts, ground displacement and structural dynamic response due to ground motion excitation. It is known that the seismic responses of spatial structure under multiple support excitation are different from those of spatial structure under simple excitation. And the seismic response of spatial structure with time lag are different from those of spatial structure without time lag. Therefore, it has to be necessary to analyze the seismic response of spatial structure under multiple support excitation and time lag because the spatial structure supports may be different and very long span. It is shown that the seismic response of spatial structure under multiple support seismic excitation are different from those of spatial structure under unique excitation.

  • The purposes of this study were to investigate whether there were differences in the young children's abilities to use spatial coordinates and to represent spatial locations by children's age and sex, and to examine the relationship between these two abilities. It also explored whether the young children could use coordinates as the frames of reference for representing spatial locations. Seventy 5- and 6-year-old children from two kindergartens in Seoul and in Bucheon participated in this study. Results indicated that there were statistically significant differences between age groups on the children's ability to use spatial coordinates and to represent spatial locations. However, there were no significant differences between boys and girls on these two abilities. A positive correlation was found between theses two abilities of using spatial coordinates and representing spatial locations. Most of the young children used landmarks as the frames of reference to represent spatial locations while some of the children were partially able to use spatial coordinates. Twenty percent of 6-year-old children were fully able to use spatial coordinates as the frames of reference to represent spatial locations.
