  • To design flight control law of an unmanned aerial vehicle, automated control gain determination program was developed. The procedure for determination of control gain was formulated as the control gains were designed from the optimal solutions of the optimization problem. PSO algorithm, which is one of the evolutionary computation method, and SQP algorithm, which is one of the nonlinear programming method, are used as optimization problem solver. Thru this technique, computation time required for finding the optimal solution is decreased to 1/5 of that of PSO algorithm and more accurate optimal solution is obtained.

  • In this paper, the comparison of the first order approximation schemes such as SLP (sequential linear programming), CONLIN(convex linearization), MMA(method of moving asymptotes) and the second order approximation scheme, SQP(sequential quadratic programming) was accomplished for optimization of and nonlinear structures. It was found that MMA and SQP(sequential quadratic programming) was accomplished for optimization of and nonlinear structures. It was found that MMA and SQP are the most efficient methods for optimization. But the number of function call of SQP is much more than that of MMA. Therefore, when it is considered with the expense of computation, MMA is more efficient than SQP. In order to examine the efficiency of MMA for complex optimization problem, it was applied to the helicopter tail boom considering column buckling and local wall buckling constraints. It is concluded that MMA can be a very efficient approximation scheme from simple problems to complex problems.

  • In this paper, three-dimensional optimal evasive maneuver patterns for air-to-surface attack missiles against proportionally navigated anti-air defense missiles were investigated. An interception error of the defense missile is produced by an evasive maneuver of the attack missile. It is assumed that the defense missiles are continuously launched during the flight of attack missile. The performance index to be minimized is then defined as the negative square integral of the interception errors. The direct parameter optimization technique based on SQP and a co-evolution method based on the augmented Lagrangian formulation are adopted to get the attack missile's optimal evasive maneuver patterns. The overall shape of the resultant optimal evasive maneuver is represented as a deformed barrel-roll.

  • AVR parameter tuning for voltage control of generators has generally been done with the off-line open-circuit model of the synchronous generator. When the generator is connected on-line and operating with load the AVR operates in an entirely different environment from the open-circuit conditions. This paper describes a new method for AVR parameter tuning for on line conditions using SQP(Sequential Quadratic Programming) meshed with frequency response characteristics of linearized on-line system model. As the proposed method uses the un - line system model the tuned parameter sets show more optimal behavior in the on-line operating conditions. furthermore, as this method considers the performance indices that are needed for stable operation as constraints, AVR parameter sets that are tuned by this method could guarantee the stable performance, too.

  • Sequential quadratic programming (SQP) has been one of the most important methods for solving nonlinear constrained optimization problems. Recently, filter method, proposed by Fletcher and Leyffer, has been extensively applied for its promising numerical results. In this paper, we present and study an active set SQP-filter algorithm for inequality constrained optimization. The active set technique reduces the size of quadratic programming (QP) subproblem. While by the filter method, there is no penalty parameter estimate. Moreover, Maratos effect can be overcome by filter technique. Global convergence property of the proposed algorithm are established under suitable conditions. Some numerical results are reported in this paper.

  • The focus of this work is on the development of large-scale numerical optimization methods for optimal control of steady incompressible Navier-Stokes flows. The control is affected by the suction or injection of fluid on portions of the boundary, and the objective function of fluid on portions of the boundary, and the objective function represents the rate at which energy is dissipated in the fluid. We develop reduced Hessian sequential quadratic programming. Both quasi-Newton and Newton variants are developed and compared to the approach of eliminating the flow equations and variables, which is effectively the generalized reduced gradient method. Optimal control problems we solved for two-dimensional flow around a cylinder. The examples demonstrate at least an order-of-magnitude reduction in time taken, allowing the optimal solution of flow control problems in as little as half an hour on a desktop workstation.

  • This paper presents the method for developing an optimum hull form with minimum wave resistance using SQP(sequential quadratic programming) as an optimization technique. The wave resistance is evaluated by a Rankine source panel method with non-linear free surface conditions and the ITTC 1957 friction line is used to predict the frictional resistance coefficient. The geometry of the hull surface is represented and modified using NURBS(Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline) surface patches. To verity the validity of the developed program the numerical calculations for Wigley hull and Series 60( $C_B=0.6$) hull have been performed and the results obtained by the numerical calculations have been compared with the original hulls.

  • In this paper, a comparative study of metallic and non-metallic stiffened plates under a lateral pressure load is performed using conventional statistically determinate and SQP(Sequential Quadratic Programming) optimisation approaches. Initially, a metallic flat-bar stiffened plate is exemplified from the superstructure of a marine vessel and, subsequently, its structural topology is varied as hat-section stiffened FRP(Fibre Reinforced Plastics) single skin plates and monocoque FRP sandwich plates having a PVC foam core. These proposed structural alternatives are analysed using elastic closed-form solutions and SQP optimisation method under stress and deflection limits obtained from practice to calculate and optimise geometry dimensions and weights. Results obtained from the comparative study provide useful information for marine designers especially at the preliminary design stage where various building materials and structural configurations are dealt with.
