  • Recently, due to increased tourism and leisure activities, falls by fishers from coastal wave-dissipating blocks (breakwaters) in Korea have been rising. We investigated the optimal mesh size for use in safety nets designed to cover Tetrapod (TTP) breakwaters to prevent casualties from falls. This is a prerequisite for considering the scale and economics of safety net facilities. The optimal mesh size was determined based on the fisher gender and age, and the bodily features of Koreans. The optimal mesh size was found to be 18.6-27.0 cm, derived based on the femoral length and chest circumference.

  • In this paper, the coupling of fine-mesh computational fluid dynamics (CFD) thermal-hydraulics (TH) code and neutronics code is achieved using the Ansys Fluent User Defined Function (UDF) for code development, including parallel meshing mapping, data computation, and data transfer. Also, some CFD schemes are designed for mesh mapping and data transfer to guarantee physical conservation in the coupling computation. Because there is no rigorous research that gives robust guidance on the various CFD schemes that must be obtained before the fine-mesh coupling computation, this work presents a quantitative analysis of the CFD meshing and mapping schemes to improve the accuracy of the value and location of key physical prediction. Furthermore, the effect of the sub-pin scale coupling computation is also studied. It is observed that even the pin-resolved coupling computation can also create a large deviation in the maximum value and spatial locations, which also proves the significance of the research on mesh mapping and data transfer for CFD code in a coupling computation.

  • The government enacted and promulgated the 'Severe Accident Punishment Act' in January 2021 and is implementing this law. However, the number of occupational accidents in 2021 increased by 10.7% compared to the same period of the previous year. Therefore, safety measures are urgently needed in the industrial field. In this study, BLE Mesh networking technology is applied for safety management of high-risk industrial sites with poor communication environment. The complex sensor AIoT device collects gas sensing values, voice and motion values in real time, analyzes the information values through artificial intelligence LSTM algorithm and CNN algorithm, and recognizes dangerous situations and transmits them to the server. The server monitors the transmitted risk information in real time so that immediate relief measures are taken. By applying the AIoT device and safety management system proposed in this study to high-risk industrial sites, it will minimize industrial accidents and contribute to the expansion of the social safety net.

  • The spatial distribution of neutron flux or reaction rate was calculated by cell or mesh tally in traditional Monte Carlo simulation. However, either cell or mesh tally leads to the increase of memory consumption and simulation time. In this paper, the function expansion tally (FET) method was developed in Reactor Monte Carlo code RMC to solve this problem. The FET method was applied to the tallies of neutron flux distributions of uranium block and PWR fuel rod models. Legendre polynomials were used in the axial direction, while Zernike polynomials were used in the radial direction. The results of flux, calculation time and memory consumption of different expansion orders were investigated, and compared with the mesh tally. Results showed that the continuous distribution of flux can be obtained by FET method. The flux distributions were consistent with that of mesh tally, while the memory consumption and simulation time can be effectively reduced. Finally, the convergence analysis of coefficients of polynomials were performed, and the selection strategy of FET order was proposed based on the statistics uncertainty of the coefficients. The proposed method can help to determine the order of FET, which was meaningful for the efficiency and accuracy of FET method.

  • A fast gamma-ray dose rate assessment method for complex geometries based on stylized model reconstruction and point-kernel method is proposed in this paper. The complex three-dimensional (3D) geometries are imported as a 3DS format file from 3dsMax software with material and radiometric attributes. Based on 3D stylized model reconstruction of solid mesh, the 3D-geometrical solids are automatically converted into stylized models. In point-kernel calculation, the stylized source models are divided into point kernels and the mean free paths (mfp) are calculated by the intersections between shield stylized models and tracing ray. Compared with MCNP, the proposed method can implement complex 3D geometries visually, and the dose rate calculation is accurate and fast.

  • The construction of new roads and the consistent extension of already-existing roads or the line-shape revision of those roads are increased with the governmental investment to SOC facilities currently. Accordingly, the road cut slopes are in the trend of rapidly increasing. As the road slope has increased, a lot of human and property damages has entailed consequently and in the local case, numerous studies have carried out aiming at minimizing this damages caused by the rockfall and landslide. In general, standard falling rock prevention facility has employed for most of the local road slope based on "Guide for Installation and Management of Road Safety Facilities" published by MLTM(the Ministry of Land, Transport, and Maritime Affairs) but profound doubt has raised as to whether this rockfall prevention facility would function properly enough to prevent rockfall efficiently without any damages in case of actual occurrence of rockfall. In addition, it is a reality that in most cases, such work is relied on overseas technology as a whole as the local technical level is low and in case of rockfall prevention net, it is judged that a study on rockfall prevention net that is able to endure more powerful rockfall energy is required as the problem including net bursting is taken place as a result of enough bearing force being failed to be demonstrated due to its partial weak point(not uniformly made). Under this background, in this study, three kinds of model depending on mesh size of expanded metal that is considered to have an adoptability as rockfall prevention net, as target are selected and characteristics depending on mesh size of expanded metal is intended to be researched through a pull-out test performance by using pull-out test equipment rockfall prevention net.

  • Over 60% of South Korea's land consists of mountainous topography, and recently, due to earthquakes, localized heavy rains and road development, the risks of rockfalls are getting higher. As of now, rockfall prevention facilities are being constructed in 70% of Korean roads cut slope and rockfall protections account for about 20% of them. Rockfall protection's supporting capacity is defined by combining performance of wire mesh, pillars and wire ropes. For the existing constructed rockfall protection, standards of pillars that can absorb 48~61 kJ amount of energy, wire ropes and wire mesh are presented in Guidelines for the installation and management of traffic safety facilities, Rockfall prevention facilities by Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs (2008). However, each factor's correlation of absorption energy is not presented so it is uncertain. This study will conduct vertical drop test and identify adequacy of rockfall protection net of displacement quantity calculation factor which is delta and evaluate rockfall protection net's absorbable energy through standards of overseas performance evaluation criteria.

  • The electrical-impedance method has been widely used for void-fraction measurement in two-phase flow due to its many favorable features. In the impedance method, the response characteristics of the electrical signal heavily depend upon flow pattern, as well as phasic volume. Thus, information on the flow pattern should be given for reliable void-fraction measurement. This study proposes an improved electrical-conductance sensor composed of a three-electrode set of adjacent and opposite electrodes. In the proposed sensor, conductance readings are directly converted into the flow pattern through a specified criterion and are consecutively used to estimate the corresponding void fraction. Since the flow pattern and the void fraction are evaluated by reading conductance measurements, complexity of data processing can be significantly reduced and real-time information provided. Before actual applications, several numerical calculations are performed to optimize electrode and insulator sizes, and optimal design is verified by static experiments. Finally, the proposed sensor is applied for air-water two-phase flow in a horizontal loop with a 40-mm inner diameter and a 5-m length, and its measurement results are compared with those of a wire-mesh sensor.
