A Survey of Sailors Knowledge, Attitudes and Preventive Behaviors about AIDS (선원들의 에이즈에 관한 지식, 태도 및 예방행위에 관한 조사연구)

  • This study was to assess Korean sailors' knowldege, attitudes and behaviors about AIDS. The subjects of this study were 379 safety-trainee sailors. Data were collected by self reporting on a questionnaire during February to March 1996. The results were as follows : The mean score on AIDS knowledge was 17.3 out of a possible maximum score of 24.0. With respect to diseas transmission , only 45.6-86.5percent of the sailors correctly indicated that causal contact does not lead to contraction AIDS. The younger, unmarried , and educated groups had a higher level of knowledge about AIDS. With respect t sailors' attitudes about ADIS, 85.2 percent of the sailors reported that the AIDS is as big a problem as the media suggested, and over half of the sailors(53.8%) reported that they are being afraid of getting AIDS. One attitude, which was most pervasive(903.1 percent agreeing) was that it is important for sailors to receive AIDS education as a part of social education classes. In attitudes , there was statistical significance by age group, marital statistical signifiacance by age group , marital status, and educational level. With respect to sailor's preventive behaviors about AIDS, the mean score was 7.1 out of a possible maximum score of 9.0. It was shown that the older age, married groups had a higher level of preventive behaviors about AIDS.

Morbidity Rate and Medical Care Utilization of Sailors during the Voyage (항해중 선원의 상병 및 치료양상)

  • The purpose of this study was to find out morbidity rate and utilization pattern of medical services of sailors on a voyage. The subjects of this study were 470 sailors who are sailors' trainee and safety-trainee for embarkation in a ship. Data were collected by means of personal survey conducted from September 5 to October 30, 1988. The subjects were sailed 12.6 months on the average. During the voyage, 49.4% of the sailors had sickness more than once, and 24.7% was unable to work more than a day because of illness. The average monthly morbidity rate was 85.7 per 1,000 and the monthly prevalence rate of disease that was unable to work more than a day was 21.2 per 1,000. The sailors of 40-49 years old had the highest morbidity rate of 103.6 per 1,000/month. The number of days activity restricted due to sickness was 93.4 days per 1,000 persons, and the average duration of illness was 11.2 days per sickness. The proportion of treatment days to sickness days was 48.8%. Considering morbidity unable to work more than a day, the number of those who had traumatic injury were 17.2%, which revealed the highest rate, influenza or cold were 15.5%, and the digestive disease 11.2%. Less than half(42.1%) of patients were treated with medicine kept in the cabin. However, 2.1% was transferred by helicopter and 29.5% was treated at hospitals or clinics in nearby port. In the cabin, 67.4% of patients was cured completely.

A Questionnaire Survey on Occupational Disease of Fisheries (어선선원(漁船船員)들의 직업 관련성 질병 실태 조사)

  • The purpose of this study was to find out morbidity rate and pattern of occupational disease and affect of variables related disease of Fishing sailors'. The subjects this study were 624 fisheries sailors' who took a safety education course in Korea Institute of Maritime and Fisheries Technology. This questionnaire was focused on finding the basic data for prevention of occupational disease and promotion health on the fishing sailors'. The collected data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, Chi-square, cross tab by SPSS package. The result of this study are as follow. 1) The morbidity rate within recent 12 months was 70.2%. There were significant differences of occurred disease in age, rank, perceived health status, fatigue symptoms, rest time, workload, overtime duration 2) The more aging(p<0.01), perceived fatigue(p<0.01), workload(p<0.01), overtime(p<0.05) and the less perceived health status(p<0.01), rest time(p<0.01), the higher morbidity rate. 3) Considering disease unable to work more than 4 hour, the number of those who had musculoskeletal disease were 20.9%, which revealed the highest rate, digestive disease 14.3%, traumatic disease 13.5%.

A Study on Planning of Foreign Sailors' Temporary Living Facilities to Prevent the Spread of COVID-19 (COVID-19 확산 방지를 위한 외국인선원 임시생활시설 계획 연구)

  • After the outbreak of COVID-19, local infections were spread by foreign sailors of foreign ships entering the ports. However, the government had difficulties in designating temporary living facilities around port areas due to the opposition from local residents. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to plan a floating temporary living facility for foreign sailors in the port area to prevent the spread of COVID-19 by foreign sailors. In this study, location selection, a facility volumetric plan, a unit facility plan, and a unit facility block plan are presented as results of facility planning. Floating temporary living facilities are expected to be used to prevent the spread of first-class infectious diseases in port areas in the future.

  • On May 12th, 2007 a merchant vessel of Golden Rose (South Korea) sank into near 38 mile from Yentai in China after the vessel collided with a container vessel of Jinsung (China), leaving all 16 sailors, including seven South Koreans, missing. According to the official report. The Chinese vessel, authorities, and South Korean government did not coordination q rescue and salvage for the sailors and vessel properly as follows: 1) The Chinese vessel left the scene without rescue and salvage of the sailors, 2) Chinese authorities failed to comply with law of the sea that required them to report the collision to South Korea immediately after confirming the accident, and 3) The South Korean government is also being criticized for its slow response to the incident since the government did not set up a response team until 21 hours after the incident. In order to reduce this number of sailor missing in future incidents, this research is studied regarding assembling conferences, assigning SRR in ASEAN+3, simplicity to enter other territory waters and cooperative training and education for the SAR.

  • This paper attempts to interpret the meaning of nine gams in Herman Melville's Moby-Dick. It approaches the topic from an organizational identity perspective. It is the theory which asserts the importance of the reference group in the formation of group members' organizational identity. This paper views the gams as the reference groups for the sailors of the Pequod and shows what meanings or questions each gam presents to them. It divides the nine gams into three groups according to their functions in the organizational sense. This paper argues that the extremely dangerous quest of the Pequod is not led by the captain only, but the sailors, who are given many chances to make their decisions after having gams, eventually choose to obey and follow their leader. The tragic end is partly what they choose, after all.

  • Recently a passenger ship and liner has been spread throughout men of diversity, the space and informations is not open to general passenger. Therefore security systems are necessary for special sailors to admit them. Although security systems has a variety usage methods which are organism recognition(finger printer, iritis and vein etc) a few years ago, these usages has a defect reusing other objects because of leaving a trace. Therefore this paper designs and implements using 3D Qube image password interface which hand gestures are recognized after acquiring from 2D input image for protective marker of finger printer.

A Study on the Systematization of Education after the Entry of Foreign Seafarers who is On-boarding in Ocean-going Merchant Vessel in Korea (외항상선 외국인선원 입국 후 교육의 체계화에 관한 기초연구)

  • In line with the transformation of the shipping industry, the number of mixed-manning ships is on the rise - bringing foreign sailors aboard with their local sailors. During on-board work, a culture is formed according to mixed-manning, which leads to changes in on-board living environment. This causes various problems such as communication problems, and lack of education and training. In order to identify and solve problems caused by mixed-manning, this study presented a plan for systematic education of foreign seafarers. The officials in charge of the affairs of foreign sailors conducted questionnaire surveys at various shipping lines. The questionnaire survey results were analyzed using the IBM SPSS Statistic 26 program. Three improvement measures were proposed to solve the problems after identification of the types of education, education methods, and problems of foreign employees. This study revealed that it is imperative to systematize related education of foreign seafarers based on the results of the survey.

Development of VR-Based Safety Education Content for Sailors (VR 기반 선원 안전교육용 콘텐츠 개발)

  • Every year, many shipping companies provide seaman safety education programs periodically to reduce ocean-traffic accidents. However, undertaking the regular safety training for seaman has been difficult because of litimation of space and time. Recently, VR technolgy is received attentions to overcome previous problems. It can provide users educational interactions between a user and virtual environment and fulfill sustainable teaching. In this paper, VR-based safety education content for sailors has been developed, and it includes four programs. Also, survey was conducted with four questionnaires such as immersiveness, easy to experience, satisfaction of education contents, comparative evaluation between traditional education program and VR education contents. As the result, immersiveness questionnaire could be gain 53.83% positive assessment, and easy to experience could be gain 65.38% positive assessment, and satisfaction could be gain 69.23% positive assessment. Lastly, comparative evaluation between traditional education program and VR education contents could be gain about 46% positive and 34% neutral assessments.
