  • The correlation between admittance and dielectric spectroscopy of dielectric relaxation in lead scandium noibate, have been investigated. Lead scandium niobate, with composition $PbSc_{0.5}Nb_{0.5}O_3$, was prepared by conventional solid state synthesis. Conductance Y'(G), susceptance Y"(B) and capacitance C of lead scandium niobate as a function of frequency and temperature were measured. From the temperature-dependence of RLC circuit, insight into physical significance of the dielectric properties of lead scandium niobate is obtained. The relative strong frequency dependent of dielectric properties in lead scandium niobate is observed, and the phase transition occurred at a broad temperature region. Also, the value of critical exponent ${\gamma}$=1.6 showed on heating process. The long relaxation times part enlarged diffuse by conductivity effects with increasing temperature, and the ordering between $Sc^{3+}$ and $Nb^{5+}$ in PSN influences complex admittance and dielectric properties. Confirmed the typical characteristic of lead-type relaxor in the Raman spectra of lead scandium niobate and major ranges are between 400 and $900cm^{-1}$.

  • A rapid and simple method is described here for the determination of scandium in monazite by neutron activation analysis. The sample is irradiated for 20 hours at the neutron flux of $10^{12}$ thermal neutrons/$cm^2$/sec in the TRIGA MARK Ⅱ reactor, after which the sample is decomposed by fusion with concentrated sulfuric acid. The scandium-46 together with scandium carrier are separated from the irradiated sample by precipitating with ammonia, and are extracted by solvent extraction of the thiocyanate complex into ether. The induced radioactivity is measured by gamma scintillation spectrometry using the Multichannel Pulse Height Analyzer connected with 2"${\times}$2" NaI(Tl). The chemical yield is determined gravimetrically by precipitating scandium with mandelic acid. In order to check the efficiency of scandium separation and the errors from interfering activities of the other elements, scandium was separated by the cation exchange resin column, and the results from both samples were compared each other, which showed that the chemical procedure used in this work was as selective as the ion-exchange method with respect to scandium separation. The scandium contents in Korean monazite were found to be about 12 p. p. m.

  • A new spectrophotometric determination method of scandium in the tin slag solution has been investigated using methyl thymol blue as a colorimetric reagent. Scandium is recovered by the anion exchange resin, Amberlite IRA 400, using the mixture solution of ammonium sulfate and sulfuric acid and an eluent. The mole ratio of complex of scandium and MTB at pH 6 is 1 to 1 and the wave length of the maximum absorbance is 585 nm and the molar absorptivity at this wave length is $2.0 {\times} 10^4\;\iota{\cdot}mol^{-1}{\cdot}cm^{-1}$. When tin slag solution is loaded into anion exchange resin and eluted, ions in the solution except scandium ion are eluted rapidly and scandium is eluted lately. So scandium is recovered easily.

  • The effects of scandium addition on the Al-6Si-2Cu Alloy were investigated. The Al-6Si-2Cu-Sc alloy was prepared by gravity die casting process. In this study, scandium was added at 0.2 wt%, 0.4 wt%, 0.8 wt%, and 1.0 wt%. The microstructure of Al-6Si-2Cu-Sc alloy was investigated using Optical Microscope, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope, Electron Back Scatter Diffraction, and Transmission Electron microscope. The microstructure of Al-6Si-2Cu alloy with scandium added changed from dendrite structure to equiaxed crystal structure in specimens of 0.4 wt% Sc or more, and coarse needle-shape eutectic Si and β-Al5FeSi phases were segmented and refined. The nanosized Al3Sc intermetallic compound was observed to be uniformly distributed in the modified Al matrix.

  • In this study, complex admittance as a function of temperature and frequency was measured to analyze the important relaxation properties of lead scandium niobate, which is physically important, although it is not an environmentally friendly electrical and electronic material, including lead. Lead scandium niobate was synthesized by heat treating the solid oxide, and the conductance, susceptance and capacitance were measured as a function of temperature and frequency from the temperature dependence of the RLC circuit. The relaxation characteristics of lead scandium niobate were found to be affected by contributions such as grain size, grain boundary characteristics, space charge, and dipole arrangement. As the temperature rises, the maximum admittance and susceptance increase in one direction, but the resonance frequency decreases below the transition temperature but increases after the phase transition.

  • PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to determine the efficiency of Erbium, Chromium: Yttrium-Scandium-Gallium-Garnet laser in different output powers for removing permanent resin cement residues and therefore its influence on microshear bond strength compared to other cleaning methods. MATERIALS AND METHODS. 90 extracted human molars were sectioned in 1 mm thickness. Resin cement was applied to surface of sliced teeth. After the removal of initial cement, 6 test groups were prepared by various dentin surface treatment methods as follows: no treatment (Group 1), ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid application (Group 2), Endosolv R application (Group 3), 1.25 W Erbium, Chromium:Yttrium-Scandium-Gallium-Garnet laser irradiation (Group 4), 2 W Erbium, Chromium:Yttrium-Scandium-Gallium-Garnet laser irradiation (Group 5) and 3.5 W Erbium, Chromium:Yttrium-Scandium-Gallium-Garnet laser irradiation (Group 6). The topography and morphology of the treated dentin surfaces were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (n=2 for each group). Following the repetitive cementation, microshear bond strength between dentin and cement (n=26 in per group) were measured with universal testing machine and the data were analyzed by Kruskal Wallis H Test with Bonferroni correction (P<.05). Fracture patterns were investigated by light microscope. RESULTS. Mean microshear bond strength ${\pm}$ SD (MPa) for each group was $34.9{\pm}17.7$, $32.1{\pm}15.8$, $37.8{\pm}19.3$, $31.3{\pm}12.7$, $44.4{\pm}13.6$, $40.2{\pm}13.2$ respectively. Group 5 showed significantly difference from Group 1, Group 2 and Group 4. Also, Group 6 was found statistically different from Group 4. CONCLUSION. 2 W and 3.5 W Erbium, Chromium: Yttrium-Scandium-Gallium-Garnet laser application were found efficient in removing resin residues.

  • A scandium(III) porphyrin-based fluoride-selective potentiometric sensor and its application in the analysis of hydrofluoric acid is described. Scandium(III) octaethylporphyrin, an ionophore recently developed for the optical fluoride sensor, was employed as a host molecule for the selective binding with fluoride in the plasticized PVC membrane. Nernstian response for $F^-$ between $10^{-4.6}$ to $10^{-1}$ M was observed at a glycine-phosphate buffer (pH 3.0). The selectivity pattern was observed as $F^-$, salicylate $\gg$ $SCN^-$ > $Cl^-$, $Br^-$, $NO_3{^-}$, $ClO_4{^-}$, which is consistent with the binding constant data measured in the plasticized PVC membrane based on a sandwich membrane method. This highly selective and reversible fluoride-sensitive electrode was employed for the analysis of hydrofluoric acid (HF). A disposable differential-type HF sensor was fabricated on the screen-printed electrode and demonstrated its ability to detect the neutral HF in the acidic solution.

  • The binding ability and hydrogen storage capacity of nitrogen doped carbon nanotube with divacancy (4NDCNxNT) that is decorated with transition metals was investigated based on density functional theory calculations. Results indicate that scandium shows an ideal reversible hydrogen binding capability with promising system-weight efficiency compared with other transition metals when functionalized with 4ND-CNxNT. The (Sc/4ND)10-CNxNT can store up to 50H2 molecules, corresponding to a maximum gravimetric density of 5.8 wt%. Detailed structural stability and electronic properties were reported as hydrogen molecules were absorbed. It takes about 0.16 eV/H2 to add one H2 molecule, which assures reversible storage of H2 molecules under ambient conditions.
