Floating architecture is a type of building that is geographically located on a sea or a river. It floats under the influence of buoyancy, and does not have an engine for moving it. Korea is a peninsula surrounded by sea except on the north side, so floating architectures have been mainly focused on two points: solving the issue of small territory and providing various leisure & cultural spaces. Floating architectures are expected to save energy effectively, if they use sea water heat, which is known to be clean energy with infinite reserves. To use sea water heat as the heat source and/or heat sink, this study proposes a model in which a sea water heat exchanger is embedded in the concrete structure in the lower part of the floating architecture that is submerged under the sea. Based on the results of performance evaluations of the sea water heat exchanger using CFD (computational fluid dynamics) analysis and mock-up experiments under various conditions, it is found out that the temperature difference between the inlet and outlet of the heat exchanger is in the range of $3.06{\sim}9.57^{\circ}C$, and that the quantity of heat transfer measured is in the range of 3,812~7,180 W. The CFD evaluation results shows a difference of 5% with respect to the results of mock-up experiment.
Purpose: The temperature in Seoul has risen 3 times more than the average global temperature increase for the past 100 years. Today, summer starts 15 days earlier than the early 20th century and is 32 days longer. This tendency causes rapid increase of cooling energy demand. Following this effect, seawater heat resources are to be used as an countermeasure for global warming. Incheon Port near the Western Sea has the lowest water temperature in the winter in South Korea in which it is suitable to use seawater cold heat resources. Method: The cold heat resource is gained from seawater when the water temperature is the lowest in the winter time and saved in a seasonal thermal storage. This can be used as cold heat resource in the summer time. A heat exchanger is essential to gain seawater cold energy. Due to this necessity, sea water heat resource heat exchangers are modeled by heat transfer equations and the fluid characteristics are analyzed. Also, a CFD (computational fluid dynamics) program is used to conduct simulation on the fluid characteristics of heat exchangers. The analyzed data of deducted from this process are comprehensively analyzed and discussed. Result: Regarding the performance of the heat exchanger, the heat exchanger was operated following the prediction within the range of heat transfer rate of minimum 3.3KW to maximum 33.6KW per device. In the temperature change analysis of the heat exchanger, fluid analysis by heat transfer equations almost corresponded to the temperature change by CFD simulation. Therefore, it is considered that the results of this study can be used as design data of heat exchangers.
A sea water source cascade heat pump was designed and tested in this study. The system was designed to perform a single stage operation in summer, as well as a cascade operation in winter to ensure the high temperature lift. A steady-state simulation model was developed to analyze and optimize its performance. The simulation results show that the R717 exhibits best performance among combinations considered in this study. A R410A also exhibits the highest performance among HFCs with the smallest compressor displacement. A 15-RT R410A-R134a pilot system was installed in the 5-story commercial building at Samcheok City by the East Sea. A scroll type R410A compressor, a reciprocating type R134a compressor, plate type condenser/evaporator/ cascade heat exchanger and two electronic expansion valves were used to build a pilot. A titanium plate type heat exchanger is also used for the heat exchanging with a sea water. The heat source/sink water is supplied from the well below the seashore in the depth of 5 m. In the initial test of the system, supply water temperature was rising up to $67^{\circ}C$ using a sea water heat source of $9^{\circ}C$, while an ambient temperature was $4.5^{\circ}C$.

This paper presents the effects of the tube materials and corrosion on the heat transfer performance of double-tube heat exchangers for the development of heat exchangers using deep sea water. Heat exchangers made of titanium, aluminum. stainless steel, iron, copper, and aluminum with electro-deposition coatings(Carbon black_$15{\mu}m$, Carbon black_$150{\mu}m$) were tested. Also, the heat transfer rate of each heat exchanger was calculated by using EES program. For the acceleration of corrosion by sea water, the temperature of sea water $70^{\circ}C$ and the concentration of salt 3.5% were considered. And the specimens were immersed in sea water during 6 weeks. From the above experiment and analysis, aluminum with electro-deposition coating(Carbon black_$150{\mu}m$) can be considered the most promising candidate for the replacement of titanium heat exchanger.

Concerns on the floating architecture development has been increased on the viewpoint of ocean space due to the increases of GDP and environmental issues such as sea level rise. However, basic research on the water heat exchanger for utilizing seawater thermal energy is insufficient. So, The purpose of this research is to develop a sea water heat exchanger model and to evaluate the performance throughout the experiment for seawater heat utilization.
A sea water source cascade heat pump was designed and tested in this study. The system was designed to perform a single stage operation in summer, as well as a cascade operation in winter to ensure the high temperature lift. The vaporizing characteristics of LNG(liquefied natural gas) via heat exchanger with sea water are analytically studied for an open rack vaporizer(ORV). This study is intended to supply the design data for the domestic fabrication of the corrosion-resistant vaporizer tube. A computational program is developed to predict the exit temperature of LNG for various conditions. In the program, thesimple and justifiable heat transfer models are selected for fully-developed internal flow of LNG, the star-shaped finned-tube, and the external falling films of sea water, as well as the possible ice formation and the fouling on the tube walls. It is found that the enongh corrugation inside of the tube wall is the most significant in the vaporizer performance for the current operating conditions. the effects of other design parameters on the heat exchanger between LNG and sea water are quantitatively presented.

In 2015, a fin tube (Cu-Ni 70/30 alloy) of package type heat exchanger for navy vessel was perforated through the wall which led to refrigerant leakage. This failure occurred after only one year since its installation. In this study, cause of the failure was determined based on available documents, metallographic studies and computational fluid dynamics simulation conducted on this fin tube. The results showed that dimensional gap between inserted plastic tube and inside wall of fin tube is the cause of the swirling turbulent stream of sea water. As a result of combination of swirling turbulence and continuing collision of hard solid particles in sea water, erosion corrosion has begun at the end of inserted plastic tube area. Crevice corrosion followed later in the crevice between the outer wall of plastic tube and inner wall of fin tube. It was found that other remaining tubes also showed the same corrosion phenomena. Thorough inspection and prompt replacement will have to be accomplished for the fin tubes of the same model heat exchanger.
