Search Portals and Academic Libraries: An Analysis of the Book Services and Academic Information Services of Major Search Portals (민간 포털의 책, 전문정보 서비스와 대학도서관 서비스)

  • This study aims to perform an evaluation of the book services and academic information services provided by the major search portals of Korea and the United States. This study also investigates the relationships between search portals and academic libraries. The results of this study can be implemented for the development and improvement of the portals' book and academic information services. Users can refer to the results of this study in choosing services from search portals. The results of this study can also provide implications for the differentiation of academic library services.

  • This study aims to perform an evaluation of unified search services provided by major Korean search portals, Naver, Daum, Yahoo-Korea, and Empas. These unified search services are evaluated in terms of the relevance of search results. In conducting this study, real queries that real users submitted were used. This study also utilized click logs that consist of documents users clicked and viewed. The results of this study can be implemented to the development and improvement of portal's unified search services. Users can refer to the results of this study in choosing unified search services from search portals.

  • This study aims to perform an evaluation of multimedia search services provided by major Korean search portals: Naver, Nate, Daum, Yahoo-Korea, Paran, and Google-Korea. These multimedia search services are evaluated in terms of the metadata of search results, search functionalities, searching methods, other functionalities, and display options. Every search portal offers image and video searching, whereas only Naver, Nate, and Daum offer music searching. Advanced searching methods and functions are mostly developed and supported in image and video searching rath than music searching. Naver, Nate, and Daum support various searching functions which search portals abroad have not developed. Google-Korea supports advanced searching functions. Search portals provide a limited number of metadata in search results. This study could contribute to the development and improvement of portal's multimedia search services.

  • This study aims to perform an evaluation of classification systems provided by major Korean search portals, Naver, Nate, Daum, and Yahoo-Korea. These classification systems are evaluated in terms of the consistency of classification system, logicality of classification system, ease of interface, clarity of category names, order of category and site listing, and hierarchical structure. The results of this study show that each search portal provides separate classification systems for their services. These results imply that it is crucial for search portals to implement a common classification system and a common interface for their services. This study could contribute to the development and improvement of portals' classification systems.

Analysis of Mobile Search Functions of Korean Search Portals (검색 포털들의 모바일 검색 기능 분석)

  • This study aims to investigate the current status of mobile search functions of Korean search portals, namely Google Korea, Naver, Nate, Daum, and Yahoo Korea. This study focuses on unique mobile search functionalities, such as voice search, music search, code search, and visual/ object search. In particular, this study analyzed characteristics of these search functions and evaluated their performances based on the accuracy and the speed of recognition. The results of this study show that both Naver and Daum support various mobile searching functions, whereas Google only supports voice search. Nate and Yahoo do not offer any unique function. The results of this study can be applied to the portal's effective development of mobile search functionalities.

  • This study aims to perform an evaluation of web-based encyclopedia services provided by major Korean search portals, Navel, Yahoo-Korea, Empas, and Daum. These encyclopedia services are evaluated in terms of the relevance, up-to-dateness, and multimedia features of search results. In conducting this study, real queries that real users submitted were used. This study also compares functional characteristics of these encyclopedia services. The results of this study can be implemented to the development and improvement of portal's encyclopedia services. Users can refer to the results of this study in choosing encyclopedia services from search portals.

  • This study aims to perform an evaluation of directory services provided by major Korean search portals: Naver, Daum, Yahoo-Korea, and Empas. A directory service of Open Directory is also compared. These directory services are evaluated in terms of the coverage, category creation criteria, site selection criteria, breadth and depth of hierarchy, clarity and currency of category names, order of category listing, and overall classification system. The results of this study can be implemented for the development and improvement of portal's directory services. Users can refer to the results of this study in choosing directory services from search portals.

Analysis and Evaluation of Video Search Services of Korean Search Portals: Naver versus Google Korea (검색 포털들의 동영상 검색 서비스 분석 평가: 네이버와 구글을 중심으로)

  • This study aims to analyze and evaluate video search services of major search portals, Naver and Google Korea. In particular, this study analyzed characteristics such as collection distribution, yearly distribution, the ratio of redundant search results, the ratio of advertising, and the quality of videos. This study also evaluated relevance, credibility, and currency of video search results, and investigated the factors that influence relevance and credibility. Finally, types and characteristics of error results were analyzed. The results of this study show that the relevance of Google's video search results is higher than those of Naver, whereas currency of Naver's search results is somewhat higher than those of Google. Google has more high resolution videos than Naver, and Naver has more advertising than Google. Both Google and Naver return many redundant videos in the search results. The results of this study can be implemented to the portal's effective development of video search services.

Analysis and Evaluation of Term Suggestion Services of Korean Search Portals: The Case of Naver and Google Korea (검색 포털들의 검색어 추천 서비스 분석 평가: 네이버와 구글의 연관 검색어 서비스를 중심으로)

  • This study aims to analyze and evaluate term suggestion services of major search portals, Naver and Google Korea. In particular, this study evaluated relevance and currency of related search terms provided, and analyzed characteristics such as number and distribution of terms, and queries that did not produce terms. This study also analyzed types of terms in terms of the relationship between queries and terms, and investigated types and characteristics of harmful terms and terms with grammatical errors. Finally, Korean queries and English queries, and popular queries and academic queries were compared in terms of the amount and relevance of search terms provided. The results of this study show that the relevance and currency of Naver's related search terms are somewhat higher than those of Google. Both Naver and Google tend to add terms to or delete terms from original queries, and provide identical search terms or synonym terms rather than providing entirely new search terms. The results of this study can be implemented to the portal's effective development of term suggestion services.

Evaluation of Mobile Unified Search Contents of Naver and Google Korea (네이버와 구글의 모바일 통합 검색 컨텐츠 평가)

  • This study aims to investigate current status of mobile search services of Korean search portals, and analyze mobile unified search contents of Naver and Google Korea. In particular, this study analyzed characteristics of mobile unified search such as number of retrieved documents, collection distribution, and yearly distribution. Also, documents were evaluated in terms of relevance, credibility, and currency. This study compared quality of Naver's unified Web best and unified Web, and Google's best Web documents and Web documents. The correlation between document's ranking and document's relevance was analyzed. The results of this study can be implemented to the portal's effective development of mobile search service.
