  • Vertical distribution of heterotrophic bacteria and physico-chemical characteristics were measuted in Kum River estuarine sediments. And interrelationship between heterotrophic bacterka and environmental factors was also studied. The type of sediment of Site 1 was silty clay, and sand at Site 2. Annual pH ranges were between 7.1 and 7.7 in the clay type sediment (Site 1) and 6.9-7.2 in the sand type sediment (Site 2). It was shown that organic matter contents were higher in the clay type sediment than those of sand type sediment. Redox potential values of sediments were decreased rapidly with depth at Site 1, but those of Sete 2 showed vertical fluctuation. Nitrogens(ammonia+amino acid-N, nitrate-N, nitrite-N) and phosphate in the clay type sediment showed higher values than those of sand type sediment. Annual distribution of heterotrophic bacteria were ranged $6.71{\times}10^4$ cells/g dry wt. $-2.50{\times}10^6$ cells/g dry wt. In the clay type sediment and $2.67{\times}10^3$ cells/g dry wt. $-1.94{\times}10^6$ cells/g dry wt. in the sand type sediment. Distribution of proteolytic, lipolytic, and amylolytic bacteria were decreased with the depth and the highest density was found in April and the lowest in January. Bacterial populations in sediments were closely correlated with such environmental factors as pH, redox potential, moisture content, organic matter contents, and inorganic nutrients such as nitrite-N and phosphate-P.

  • Soil erosion and sediment from agricultural farmland has caused various negative impacts on environment in recent years. The effect of rice straw mat on soil erosion has been investigated by many researchers these days. In this study, the SWAT model was applied to Hongcheon watershed to evaluate SWAT flow and sediment, and the effect of rice straw mat on sediment yield at watershed outlet was evaluated. The Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency (NSE) and coefficient of determination ($R^2$) values for flow simulation (calibration period) were 0.66 and 0.67, and the NSE values for sediment was 0.90. The calibrated parameters were used to analyze the reduction of sediment yield in the farmland with rice straw mat. Average daily sediment yield without rice straw mat was 49.8 ton/day and sediment yield with rice straw mat was 25.5 ton/day, and the reduction rate was 38.7 %. Also, average daily sediment yield with/without rice straw mat were 97.5 ton/day and 190.7 ton/day during the rainy season (Jun. 2008 - Aug. 2009), with the reduction rate 46.3 %.

  • Annual sediment deposition in reservoirs behind weirs poses flood risk, while its accurate prediction remains a challenge. Sediment management by hydraulic flushing is an effective method to maintain reservoir storage. In this study, an integrated approach to predict sediment inflow and sediment flushing simulation in reservoirs is presented. The annual sediment inflow prediction was carried out with Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) modelling. RESCON model was applied for quantification of sediment flushing feasibility criteria. The integrated approach was applied on Sangju Weir and also on estuary of Nakdong River (NREB). The mean annual sediment inflow predicted at Sangju Weir and NREB was 400,000 ㎥ and 170,000 ㎥, respectively. The sediment characteristics gathered were used to setup RESCON model and sediment balance ratio (SBR) and long term capacity ratio (LTCR) were used as flushing efficiency indicators. For Sangju Weir, the flushing discharge, Qf = 140 ㎥/s with a drawdown of 5 m, and flushing duration, Tf = 10 days was necessary for efficient flushing. At NREB site, the parameters for efficient flushing were Qf = 80 ㎥/s, Tf = 5 days, N = 1, Elf = 2.24 m. The hydraulic flushing was concluded feasible for sediment management at both Sangju Weir and NREB.

  • While estuarine dams can develop freshwater resources and block the salt intrusion, they can result in increased sediment deposition in the estuary. The mechanism of increased sediment deposition in an estuary with an estuary dam is not well understood. To fill this knowledge gap, 7 ADCP measurements of flow and suspended sediment concentration (SSC) were collected along-channel in an estuary with an estuarine dam over a neap-spring cycle. Flow and SSC were used to calculate the sediment flux and sediment flux gradients. The results indicated that the cumulative sediment fluxes at all stations were directed landward. The along-channel sediment flux gradient was negative, which indicated deposition along the channel. The landward mean-flow fluxes were dominant in the deep portion of the channel near the estuary mouth, whereas landward correlation fluxes were dominant in the shallow portion of the channel near the estuarine dam. The tides were the dominant forcing driving the sediment fluxes throughout the estuary.

  • The destruction of river and damage caused by flood are suddenly increasing due to the abnormal climate. In the investigation result about the damage, approximate 52% of the destruction of embankment are caused by earth work. Moreover, to recover conveyance of relief channel, bed sediment is dredged about 198 millions $m^3$ with 'the project of bed dredging'. So, the concern for bed sediment is the more increasing, the requiring high quality material for banking and the way for application of bed sediment are also the more increasing. In this paper, properties of bed sediment were analyzed through sedimentary mechanism analysis. Moreover, possibility to build embankment with bed sediment in 6 points which is in catchment of the Nak-dong river was also analyzed. At 6 points, which were selected to survey easily, sediment discharge was analyzed with formula. Moreover, size and permeability were analyzed and the feasibility for material of embankment was proposed. If bed sediment wasn't proper, complementary measures were proposed.

  • This study investigated the effects of NPS(non point source) pollution reduction of sediment traps through field experiments. Various sizes of 4 sediment traps were applied in a upland field located in Gunwi and assessed the infiltration and storage effects as well as NPS pollution reduction effects of this technique. The characteristics of deposited soil in the sediment traps were also analyzed including distribution of particle size, soil texture, and chemical properties. The results showed that slightly different composition of soil particle size from each sediment trap with high proportion of 0.15mm and 0.25mm ranges of soil particle diameters, while the loamy sand is the main types of deposited soils in the sediment traps. Decreased NPS pollution were observed from the water quality analysis of the samples taken from the sediment traps. Further research need to be proceeded continuously to improve this technique in order to utilize on upland fields for management of agricultural NPS pollutions.

  • The objectives of the paper are to apply the gross erosion and sediment delivery ratio method for estimating sediment deposits and to define their trap efficiencies. For twenty irrigation reservoirs which have sediment survey data, the gross erosion was estimated from the channel erosion as well as the soil losses by applying USLE. The gross erowion was reduced to the sediment yields by multiplying the sediment delivery ratios. The results were multipled by trap efficiencies after Brune method to estimate sediment deposits, which were compared to sediment surveyed data. The comparisons showed deposits. And a trap efficiency relationship was derived from a regression method, which appeared better suited for irrigation reservoirs.

  • Reservoir sedimentation is one of the major concerns for sustainable reservoir operation. Since sediment concentration of the rivers in the Himalayan Mountain is very high, a proper sediment management scheme is necessary. This paper presents long-term reservoir sedimentation and sediment flushing based on the gate operation. Focused on the reservoir to be constructed for the Patrind hydropower project in Pakistan, 4 different flushing scenarios were proposed in this study to prevent successive sedimentation. By extending flushing period and by increasing the flushing discharge for 2 times, the flushing rate increases up to 53.2% and 43.6% in proportion to flushing period and discharge, respectively. Based on the simulation presented in this paper, it is expected to establish efficient sediment management plan to increase hydro power generation and sediment flushing simultaneously.

  • Assume fluid eddy viscosity in the vertical direction is parabolic. Sediment particles diffuse with the given fluid eddy viscosity. However, when the vertical diffusion coefficient profile is computed from the suspended sediment concentration profile, the coefficient shows lager values than the fluid mixing coefficient values. This trend was explained by using two sizes of sediment particles. When fine sediment particles like wash load are added in water column the sediment mixing coefficient looks much larger than the fluid mixing coefficient.

  • To estimate the sediment discharge controlled by sediment-filled check-dam and thereby enhancing factor for check-dam design and dredging criteria, we surveyed slope failures and stream-bed fluctuation caused by geomorphic disturbances (i.e., landslides and debris flows) in Inje, Gangwondo. In general, check-dams play roles for restraining and controlling sediment discharge within a section under the design equilibrium gradient and a section under the design flood gradient, respectively. The results in this study showed same pattern: that is, the closed type check-dam, which has a design restraint sediment discharge of $2,111m^3$, estimated to control a sediment discharge of $3,996m^3$ in the stream section within 250 m right upper area immediately after the disturbances occurred in 2006. As a result, a design control sediment discharge of the check-dam was larger than its design restraint sediment discharge. This represents that the check-dam is still having an own function for controlling sediment discharge although it exceeded the designed capacity by the sediment discharged from upstream during the disturbances. Our finding suggests that the sediment discharge controlling of check-dam may need to be evaluated separately from its sediment discharge restraint. Currently, the country, however, does not consider the design control (or restraint) sediment discharges, based on the actual field survey, as criteria for check-dam design and/or dredging work. Therefore, the accumulation of the quantitative data is required to support that check-dam has functions for both restraining and controlling sediment discharge. This would be a way to develop our erosion control technology to the scientific technology equipped with a more objective and systematic aspects.
