  • In distributed source localization where sensors transmit measurements to a fusion node, we address the sensor selection problem where the goal is to find the best set of sensors that maximizes localization accuracy when quantization of sensor measurements is taken into account. Since sensor selection depends heavily upon rate assigned to each sensor, joint optimization of rate allocation and sensor selection is required to achieve the best solution. We show that this task could be accomplished by solving the problem of allocating rates to each sensor so as to minimize the error in estimating the position of a source. Then we solve this rate allocation problem by using the generalized BFOS algorithm. Our experiments demonstrate that the best set of sensors obtained from the proposed sensor selection algorithm leads to significant improvements in localization performance with respect to the set of sensors determined from a sensor selection process based on unquantized measurements.

  • Objective: A formula is needed that is practical for current livestock breeding methods and that predicts the approximate rate of inbreeding (ΔF) in populations where selection is performed according to four-path programs (sires to breed sons, sires to breed daughters, dams to breed sons, and dams to breed daughters). The formula widely used to predict inbreeding neglects selection, we need to develop a new formula that can be applied with or without selection. Methods: The core of the prediction is to incorporate the long-tern genetic influence of the selected parents in four-selection paths executed as sires to breed sons, sires to breed daughters, dams to breed sons, and dams to breed daughters. The rate of inbreeding was computed as the magnitude that is proportional to the sum of squared long-term genetic contributions of the parents of four-selection paths to the selected offspring. Results: We developed a formula to predict the rate of inbreeding in populations undergoing four-path selection on genomically enhanced breeding values and with discrete generations. The new formula can be applied with or without selection. Neglecting the effects of selection led to underestimation of the rate of inbreeding by 40% to 45%. Conclusion: The formula we developed here would be highly useful as a practical method for predicting the approximate rate of inbreeding (ΔF) in populations where selection is performed according to four-path programs.

  • Untethered nodes in mobile ad-hoc networks strongly depend on the efficient use of their batteries. In this paper, we propose a new metric, the drain rate, to forecast the lifetime of nodes according to current traffic conditions. This metric is combined with the value of the remaining battery capacity to determine which nodes can be part of an active route. We describe new route selection mechanisms for MANET routing protocols, which we call the Minimum Drain Rate (MDR) and the Conditional Minimum Drain Rate (CMDR). MDR extends nodal battery life and the duration of paths, while CMDR also minimizes the total transmission power consumed per packet. Using the ns-2 simulator and the dynamic source routing (DSR) protocol, we compare MDR and CMDR against prior proposals for power-aware routing and show that using the drain rate for power-aware route selection offers superior performance results.

  • Adverse selection is a heavily scrutinized subject within the financial intermediary industry. Consensus is reached regarding its effect on the loan interest rate. Despite the similar features of financial service offered by the credit card, we still have controversy regarding credit card interest rate on how is adverse selection incurred with the change of interest rate. Thus, this paper explores how does the adverse selection, if ever, take place and affect the credit card interest rate. Information asymmetry regarding the credit card users' type represented by the default probability is assumed. The users are assumed to be rational in that they want to minimize the per unit dollar expense associated with the commercial transaction and financing between the two typical payment methods, cash and credit card. Suppliers, i.e. credit card companies, would like to maximize their profit and would be better off with more pervasive use of credit cards over the cash. Then we could show that the increasing credit card interest rate is subject to the adverse selection, sharing the same tenet with that of the bank loan interest rate proposed by Stiglitz and Weiss. Hence the current theory predicts that credit card market also suffers from adverse selection with increasing interest rate.

  • Due to the decrease in the school-age population and government regulations, universities have made great efforts to secure their own competitiveness. In particular, the selection of universities with financial support based on the recent evaluation of the Ministry of Education has become a major concern enough to affect the existence of the university itself. This paper extracts three-year data from 124 major private universities nationwide, and quantitatively analyzes the variables of major universities selected as self-improvement universities, competency reinforcement universities, and universities with limited financial support. As a result of estimating the selection of self-powered universities using the ordered logit model by hierarchically inputting 12 variables, student competitiveness in the metropolitan area (1.318**), Educational Restitution Rate (4.078***), University operation expenditure index rate (1.088***) values were found. Significant positive coefficient values were found in the admission enrollment rate (45.98***) and the enrollment rate (13.25***). As a result of analyzing the marginal effects, the increase in the rate of reduction of education costs has always been positive in the selection of self-powered universities, but it was observed that the rate of increase decreases in areas of increase of 150% or more. On the contrary, the probability of becoming a Em-powered university was negative in all sectors, but on the contrary, it was analyzed that marginal effects increased at the same time point. On the other hand, the employment rate of graduates was not able to find direct significance with the result of the selection of Self powered universities. Through this paper, it is expected that each university will analyze the possibility and shortcomings of the selection of Self powered universities in policy making, and in particular, the risk of dropout of selection for the vulnerable field can be predicted using marginal effects. It can be used as major research data for both university evaluators, university officials and students.

  • In this paper, considering the superposition transmission-based wireless cooperative multicast communication system (ST-CMS) with multiple relays and destinations, we propose a relay selection scheme to improve the data rate of multicast communication. In addition, we adopt the optimal power allocation coefficient for the superposition transmission to maximize the data rate of the proposed relay selection scheme. To propose the relay selection scheme, we derive an approximate expression for the data rate of the ST-CMS, and present the relay selection scheme using only partial channel state information based on the approximate expression. Moreover, we derive an approximate average data rate of the proposed relay selection scheme. Through numerical investigation, comparing the average data rates of the proposed relay selection scheme and the optimal relay selection scheme using full channel state information, we show that the proposed scheme provides extremely similar performance to the optimal scheme in the high signal-to-noise power ratio region.

  • With the acceleration of construction industrialization, the buildings that China has adopted the construction of industrialization technology are increasing day by day, and Precast Concrete (PC) Structure technology is one of the main technologies of construction industrialization. Compared with the traditional cast-in-place concrete structure, PC structure is more conducive to shorten the construction period, reduce the number of construction workers and the site construction waste. Nevertheless, PC structure improves the requirements of hoisting machinery in the construction site, and the lay-out and selection of hoisting machinery become an important factor influencing the construction cost. The paper regards the typical tower crane in China as the research object, and establishes the time optimization model for the lifting scheme. The influence of the different precast rate on the selection of the tower crane is analyzed. This paper obtains the time variation of the tower crane under different precast rate, provides a theoretical basis for the design of precast concrete structures under the influence of assembly construction, and lays the foundation for the selection of tower crane under the precast rate.

  • This paper investigates the capacity rate problems for a joint decode-and-forward (JDF) based two-way relaying with network coding. We first characterize the achievable rate region for a conventional three-node network scenario along with the calculation of the corresponding maximal sum-rate. Then, for the goal of maximizing the system sum-rate, opportunistic relay selection is examined for multi-relay networks. As a result, a novel strategy for the implementation of relay selection is proposed, which depends on the instantaneous channel state and allows a single best relay to help the two-way information exchange. The JDF scheme and the scheme using relay selection are analyzed in terms of outage probability, after which the corresponding exact expressions are developed over Rayleigh fading channels. For the purpose of comparison, outage probabilities of the amplify-and-forward (AF) scheme and those of the scheme using relay selection are also derived. Finally, simulation experiments are done and performance comparisons are conducted. The results verify that the proposed strategy is an appropriate method for the implementation of relay selection and can achieve significant performance gains in terms of outage probability regardless of the symmetry or asymmetry of the channels. Compared with the AF scheme and the scheme using relay selection, the conventional JDF scheme and that using relay selection perform well at low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs).

  • Coded cooperation that integrates channel coding in cooperative transmission has gained a great deal of interest in wireless relay networks. The performance analysis of coded cooperation protocol with multiple relays is investigated in this paper. We show that the diversity order achieved by the coded cooperation in a multi-relay wireless network is not only dependent on the number of cooperating relays but is also dependent on the code-rate of the system. We derive the code-rate bound, which is required to achieve the full diversity gain of the order of cooperating nodes. The code-rate required to achieve full diversity is a linearly decreasing function of the number of available relays in the network. We show that the instantaneous channel state information (CSI)-based relay selection can effectively alleviate this code-rate bound. Analysis shows that the coded cooperation with instantaneous CSI-based relay selection can achieve the full diversity, for an arbitrary number of relays, with a fixed code-rate. Finally, we develop tight upper bounds for the bit error rate (BER) and frame error rate (FER) of the relay selection based on coded cooperation under a Rayleigh fading environment. The analytical upper bounds are verified with simulation results.

  • This paper compares the four selections of performance used in the application of genetic algorithms (GAs) to automatically optimize multispectral pixel cluster for unsupervised classification from KOMPSAT-3 data, since the selection among three main types of operators including crossover and mutation is the driving force to determine the overall operations in the clustering GAs. Experimental results demonstrate that the tournament selection obtains a better performance than the other selections, especially for both the number of generation and the convergence rate. However, it is computationally more expensive than the elitism selection with the slowest convergence rate in the comparison, which has less probability of getting optimum cluster centers than the other selections. Both the ranked-based selection and the proportional roulette wheel selection show similar performance in the average Euclidean distance using the pixel clustering, even the ranked-based is computationally much more expensive than the proportional roulette. With respect to finding global optimum, the tournament selection has higher potential to reach the global optimum prior to the ranked-based selection which spends a lot of computational time in fitness smoothing. The tournament selection-based clustering GA is used to successfully classify the KOMPSAT-3 multispectral data achieving the sufficient the matic accuracy assessment (namely, the achieved Kappa coefficient value of 0.923).
