  • This study was conducted in order to identify factors that influence the will of self-reliance among workers participating in self-support programs. For this purpose, data were collected from self-support program participants in 2012 (1,301 participants in self-supporting labor programs and 128 in self-support community programs). Input variables analyzed as factors influencing the will of self-reliance were socio-demographic variables, self-esteem, and social capital. According to the results, first, self-supporting labor program participants' self-esteem was 2.328 out of 4 (S.M= .402) and it was somewhat lower than 2.406 (S.M=.404) in self-support community participants, but the difference was not significant. Self-supporting labor program participants' social capital was 2.980 out of 5 (S.M=.844), significantly lower than 3.356 (S.M=.815) in self-support community program participants. Self-supporting labor program participants' will of self-support was 4.150 out of 5 (S.M=.602), lower than 4.314 (S.M=.521) in self-support community program participants. Second, according to the results of regression analysis on self-support program participants' will of self-reliance, age (B=-.198, p<.001), self-esteem (B=.236, p<.001), and social capital (B=.166, p<.001) were found to have a significant effect. That is, the will of self-support was higher when age was young, when self-esteem was high, and when social capital was high. Based on these findings, this study suggested self-support policies, education systems, differentiated programs, etc. for enhancing self-support program participants' will of self-reliance.

Findings were that peer acceptance had a higher influence on academic-general self, peer-related self, physical-appearance self, personality self and physical-competence self than did mother's support. Mother's support had a higher influence on home self than did peer acceptance. Best friend's support and mother's support interacted with children's physical-appearance self and physical-competence self. • This study examined the effects of family climate, peer support and self-esteem on children's self-regulation. The participants in this study were 369 children (M=11.78 year) who completed questionnaires regarding family climate, peer support, self-esteem and self-regulation. Data were analyzed means by of a Structural equation model using AMOS 7.0. Our results indicated that (1) family climate, peer support and self-esteem were directly linked with children's self-regulation (2) the associations between family climate or peer support and children's self-regulation were mediated by children's self-esteem. These results imply that family climate and peer support are important antecedent variables in predicting children's self-regulation as well as their relative levels of self-esteem.

  • Purpose: This study was done to evaluate depression in child cancer survivors. Methods: The participants in this descriptive research were 103 adolescents who agreed to participate. All of the adolescents were diagnosed as completely cured but remained under follow-up observation as outpatients. A structured questionnaire including the depression scale developed by Shin et al. (1991), a self-esteem scale developed by Rosenberg (1965) and a social support scale developed by Kim & Park (1999), Lee (1997) were used for data collection. The data were analyzed using SPSS. Results: The mean scores were, for self-esteem, 36.01, for paternal support, 57.21, for maternal support, 59.98, for peer support, 22.19, for teachers support, 21.07 and for depression, 27.95. Scores for depression were significantly different according to academic achievement, satisfaction with appearances, diagnosis and prognosis. Depression was negatively correlated with self-esteem, paternal support, maternal support, peer support, and teachers support. Variables affecting depression were peer support and self-esteem, accounting for 47.0% of the variance. Conclusion: The findings indicate that peer support and self-esteem, follow by maternal, paternal and teachers support, are important variables in the occurrence of depression in these adolescents. Further study is needed to develop strategies to increase this support and self-esteem.
