Settlement Behavior of Wing-wall type Foundation on Soft Grounds (연약지반에서 날개벽 기초의 침하량 산정)

  • Piled raft foundation is commonly used for structure on deep soft soil deposit rather than end bearing piles to control differential settlement. However, it is still expensive for light weight structures. Wing-wall type foundation has been successfully applied to reduce average settlement for light weight structure. This study will further investigate this type of foundation using bench scale experiments on clay and sand. Numerical analysis and approach method are used to verify load settlement curve of wing-wall foundation on experimentally study. Furthermore, normalized settlement curves are applied to define prediction of settlement on wing-wall foundation. In the result settlement on wing-wall foundation can be effectively done by increasing the length of wall instead of number of walls and equation for calculating average settlement can be derived using normalized load settlement curve.

  • Magnetic sensing system and automated monitoring system based on digital hall sensor for ground settlement are developed to change traditional method for monitoring surface settlement and underground settlement by manual type and to overcome technical limits of existing automated settlement monitoring system. It's possible to monitor surface settlement and underground settlement with multi-points at the same time in a single hole with NX size. It was possible to verify technical confidence and stability by several case studies of soft ground improvement project.

  • In stability and settlement management of soft ground, the settlement prediction technology has been continuously developed and used to reduce construction cost and confirm the exact land use time. However, the preexistence prediction methods such as hyperbolic method, Asaoka method and Hoshino method are difficult to predict the settlement accurately at the beginning of consolidation because the accurate settlement prediction is possible only after many measurement periods have passed. It is judged as the reason for estimating the future settlement through the proportionality assumption of the slope which the preexistence prediction method computes from the settlement curve. In this study, ARIMA technique is introduced among time series analysis techniques and compared with preexistence prediction methods. ARIMA method was predictable without any distinction of ground conditions, and the results similar to the existing method are predicted early (final settlement).

  • Purpose - The purpose of this study is to examine whether the change of settlement procedures have an impact on the distribution of day of the week effect in the UK and French markets or not. U.K and France changed their systems from fixed settlement date systems to fixed settlement lag systems Design/methodology/approach - This study adopted the data of the specific stock market indices such as FTSE 100 in the U.K market and FRCAC 40 in the French market, This study constructs a test of the differences in mean returns across the days of the week by computing the regression equations for each country index. Findings - First, this study found that the evolving settlement procedures in stock exchanges have an effect on stock return of day of the week. Second, long-run improvements in market efficiency may have diminished the effects of certain anomalies in recent periods. Improvements in market efficiency and evolving settlement systems may cause the disappearance of the weekend effect. Research implications or Originality - The Implication of this study is that recent settlement systems contributed to the disappearance of the weekend effect and explains improvements in market efficiency and diminishments of market anomaly. This study may be the first study which examines whether evolving settlement systems have an effect on the disappearance of the weekend effect in the market or not.

Parallel tunnel settlement characteristics: a theoretical calculation approach and adaptation analysis

  • Settlement evaluation is important for shallow tunnels in big cities to estimate the settlement that occurs due to the excavation of twin tunnels. The majority of earlier research on analytical solutions, on the other hand, concentrated on calculating the settlement for a single tunnel. This research introduces a procedure to evaluate the settlement induced by the excavation of twin tunnels (two parallel tunnels). In this study, a series of numerical analysis were performed to validate the analytical solution results. Two geological conditions were considered to derive the settlement depending on each case. The analytical and numerical methods were compared, which involved considering many sections and conducting a parametric study; the results have good agreement. Moreover, a comparison of the 3D flat model and 2D (FEM) with the analytical solution shows that in the fill soil, the maximum settlement values were obtained by the analytical solution. In contrast, the values obtained by the analytical solution in the rock is more conservative than those in the fill. Finally, this method was shown to be appropriate for twin tunnels dug side by side by utilizing finite element analysis 3D and 2D (PLAXIS 3D and PLAXIS 2D) to verify the analytical equations. Eventually, it will be possible to use this approach to predict settlement troughs over twin tunnels.

A Study on the Beginning Point of Secondary Compression in Consolidation Theory (압밀이론에서 2차 압축 적용 시점에 관한 연구)

  • To improve the problem that the settlement curve of the consolidation theory of Terzaghi does not match well with the actual settlement curve, we included a secondary compression settlement and analyzed it by varying the beginning point and then obtained the following results. The current methods of calculating the compression index from the  log𝜎 curve and the coefficient of consolidation from the time-dependent settlement curve for each consolidation pressure proved that the final settlement amount will be consistent after a long time, but the actual settlement amount will always be smaller than the predicted settlement amount during the settlement progress stage. The consolidation factors estimated by the curve fitting with the condition that the secondary compression begins in the second half of the primary compression showed similar values to the consolidation factors estimated by the curve fitting for the primary compression only, and the settlement curves were in better agreement throughout the compression. It showed different values, showing low validity. It can be inferred that secondary compression acts from the point when a significant portion of the excess pore water pressure is dissipated, and the loading stress begins to have more influence on the skeletal structure of the soil. Analysis results show that secondary compression begins at the range of 91 % to 98 % on the average degree of primary consolidation.

A long-term tunnel settlement prediction model based on BO-GPBE with SHM data

  • The new metro crossing the existing metro will cause the settlement or floating of the existing structures, which will have safety problems for the operation of the existing metro and the construction of the new metro. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor and predict the settlement of the existing metro caused by the construction of the new metro in real time. Considering the complexity and uncertainty of metro settlement, a Gaussian Prior Bayesian Emulator (GPBE) probability prediction model based on Bayesian optimization (BO) is proposed, that is, BO-GPBE. Firstly, the settlement monitoring data are analyzed to get the influence of the new metro on the settlement of the existing metro. Then, five different acquisition functions, that is, expected improvement (EI), expected improvement per second (EIPS), expected improvement per second plus (EIPSP), lower confidence bound (LCB), probability of improvement (PI) are selected to construct BO model, and then BO-GPBE model is established. Finally, three years settlement monitoring data were collected by structural health monitoring (SHM) system installed on Nanjing Metro Line 10 are employed to demonstrate the effectiveness of BO-GPBE for forecasting the settlement.

  • Settlement prediction has been conducted using Hyperbolic, Hoshino, and Monden methods, etc in the fields. These methods are only able to predict settlement after finishing the final filling stage. A new method is proposed to make up for such a weak point. This method was named as SPSFC (Settlement Prediction for Staged Filling Construction) method, which can be able to predict the settlement both the final filling stage and the staged filling from the initial filling stage in soft ground. To verify the applicability of the SPSFC method, firstly. The settlement predicted by the existed methods are compared with that obtained by the SPSFC method. The comparison results indicate the SPSFC has enough reliability to use for prediction of settlement. Secondly. by analyzing the settlement data measured during the initial filling stage, the soil parameters which need to predict the settlement are obtained by the SPSFC method. Then using the obtained soil parameters the time-settlement curve is predicted and compared. The predicted settlement is well matched with the measured one. From the study, the SPSFC method can be possible to predict settlement during the staged filling with only the initial settlement data.

An Experimental Study on the Settlement Characteristics of Soft Ground in the Central West Coast Region (서해안 중부지역 연약지반의 침하특성 분석을 위한 실험적 연구)

  • Purpose: An experiment was conducted to analyze the characteristics of the settlement of soft clay soil in the central region of the west coast of Korea, which has a high silt content and is difficult to predict settlement due to various stress histories. Method: Field experiments were conducted for three cases. The settlement amount of the subsidence plate was measured in each case, and the following conclusions were drawn by analyzing Terzaghi's one-dimensional consolidation settlement amount, both the hyperbolic method and the Asaoka method. Result: The predicted value by Terzaghi was analyzed to be the largest in all cases, and it was predicted to be 111% to 187% larger than the subsidence plate settlement value. That is, the subsidence plate settlement value, which is the amount of settlement of the actual ground, showed a settlement of 53.4~89.9% compared to the predicted value of Terzaghi. Therefore, it was analyzed that the expected settlement of the Terzaghi method in the clay soft ground of the central west coast of Korea is more than the actual settlement. Conclusion: It was analyzed that the Asaoka method and the hyperbolic method presented relatively similar results, and in practice, predicting the settlement amount smaller than the actual settlement amount may cause a risk, so the hyperbola analysis method predicted 6~14% larger than the actual settlement amount can be used as a safety side.

Instrumentation Management of Differential Settlement of the Deep Soft Ground with Dredged Clay Reclaimed in the Upper (대심도 준설 매립지반에서의 층별침하 계측관리에 관한 사례 연구)

  • There are a lot of difference between the surface settlement and the differential settlement measured at the Busan New Port, where the dredged and reclaimed clay layer exists and below the clay is originally thickly distributed. To find the cause and solution of this, the actual conditions of each differential settlement used for the soft ground improvement, characteristics, installation method, measurement frequency, measurement data management, and data analysis of each type were considered. In the deep soft ground improvement work where large deformation occurs, the bending deformation of the screw-type differential settlement gauge is less than that of other types of measuring instruments, so there is less risk of loss, and the reliability of data is relatively high as the instruments are installed by drilling for each stratum. Since the greater the amount of high-precision settlement measurement data, the higher the settlement analysis precision. It is necessary to manage with higher criteria than the measurement frequency suggested in the standard specification. For the data management of the differential settlement gauge, it is desirable to create graphs of the settlement and embankment height of the relevant section over time, such as surface, differential, and settlement of pore water pressure gauge for each point. In the case of multi-layered ground with different compression characteristics, it is more appropriate to perform settlement analysis by calculating the consolidation characteristics of each stratum using a differential settlement data.
