  • The side information in the distributed video coding system is generated using motion compensated interpolation methods. Since the accuracy of the generated side information affects the amount of parity bits for the reconstruction of Wyner-Ziv frame, it is important to produce an accurate side information. In this paper, we analyze the informance of various side information generation methods and propose an effective side information generation technique. Also, we compare each side information generation methods from the hardware point of view and analyze the performance of distributed video coding system using various side information generation methods.

  • Wyner-Ziv video coding is a new video compression paradigm based on distributed source coding theory of Slepian-Wolf and Wyner-Ziv. Wyner-Ziv coding enables light-encoder/heavy-decoder structure by shifting complex modules including motion estimation/compensation task to the decoder. Instead of performing the complicated motion estimation process in the encoder, the Wyner-Ziv decoder performs the motion estimation for the generation of side information in order to make the predicted signal of the Wyner-Ziv frame. The efficiency of side information generation deeply affects the overall coding performance, since the bit-rates of the Wyner-Ziv coding is directly dependent on side information. In this paper, an improved side information generation method using field coding is proposed. In the proposed method, top fields are coded with the existing SI generation method and bottom fields are coded with new SI generation method using the information of the top fields. Simulation results show that the proposed method improves the quality of the side information and rate-distortion performance compared to the conventional method.

  • Side information generation techniques play a great role in determining the overall performance of the DVC (Distributed Video Coding) coding system. Most conventional techniques for side information generation are mainly based on the block matching algorithm with symmetric motion estimation between the previously reconstructed key frames. But, these techniques tend to show mismatches between the motion vectors and the real placements of moving objects. So these techniques need to be modified so as to search well the real placements of moving objects. To overcome this problem, this paper proposes a block-centered symmetric motion estimation technique which uses the same coordinates with the given block. Through computer simulations, it is shown that the proposed algorithm outperforms the conventional schemes in the objective quality.

  • In this paper, we propose a new depth map based distributed multi-view video coding algorithm through an efficient side information generation. A distributed video coding scheme corrects errors between an original image and side information generated at a decoder by using channel coding techniques. Therefore, the more accurate side information is generated, the better performance of distributed video coding scheme is achieved. In the proposed algorithm, a distributed video coding scheme is applied to multi-view video coding based on depth map. Side information is also generated from images of adjacent views through 3D warping by using a depth map and is also combined with MCTI(motion compensated temporal interpolation) which uses images on a temporal axis, and 3D warping. Experimental results show that side information generated by using the proposed algorithm has 0.97dB better average PSNR compared with using MCTI and 3D warping separated. In addition, 8.01% of average bit-rate has been decreased while the same PSNR in R-D curves is kept.

  • In this paper, a distributed image coding scheme for multi-view video through an efficient generation of side information is proposed. A distributed video coding technique corrects the errors in the side information, which is generated with the original image, by using the channel coding technique at the decoder. Therefore, the more correct the generated side information is, the better the performance of distributed video coding. The proposed technique is to apply the distributed video coding schemes to the image coding for multi-view video. It generates side information by selectively and efficiently using both 3-dimensional warping based on the depth map with spatially adjacent frames and motion-compensated temporal interpolation with temporally adjacent frames. In this scheme the difference between the adjacent frames, the sizes of the motion vectors for the adjacent blocks, and the edge information are used as the selection criteria. From the experiments, it was observed that the quality of the side information generated by the proposed technique was improved by the average peak signal-to-noise ratio of 0.97dB than the one by motion-compensated temporal interpolation or 3-dimensional warping. The result from analyzing the rate-distortion curves revealed that the proposed scheme could reduce the bit-rate by 8.01% on average at the same peak signal-to-noise ratio value, compared to previous work.

  • In Distributed Video Coding(DVC), a low complexity encoder can be realized by shifting complex processes of encoder such as motion estimation to decoder. Since not only motion estimation/compensation processes but also channel decoding process needs to be performed at DVC decoder, the complexity of a decoder is significantly increased in consequence. Therefore, various fast channel decoding methods are proposed for the most computationally complex part, which is the channel decoding process in DVC decoding. As the channel decoding process becomes faster using various methods, however, the complexity of the other processes are relatively highlighted. For instance, the complexity of side information generation process in the DVC decoder is relatively increased. In this paper, therefore, a fast method for the DVC decoding is proposed by using adaptive search range method in side information generation process. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves time saving of about 63% in side information generation process, while its rate distortion performance is degraded only by about 0.17% in BDBR.

  • Distributed video coding (DVC) is a new coding paradigm that enables to exploit the statistics among sources only in decoder and to achieve extremely low complex video encoding without any loss of coding efficiency. Wyner-Ziv coding, a particular implementation of DVC, reconstructs video by correcting noise on side information using channel code. Since a good quality of side information brings less noise to be removed by the channel code, generation of good side information is very important for the overall coding efficiency. However, if there are complex motions among frames, it is very hard to generate a good quality of side information without any information of original frame. In this paper, we propose a method to enhance the quality of the side information using small amount of additional information of original frame in the form of hash. By decoder's informing encoder where the hash has to be transmitted, side information can be improved enormously with only small amount of hash data. Therefore, the proposed method gains considerable coding efficiency. Results of our experiment have verified average PSNR gain up to 1 dB, when compared to the well-known DVC codec, known as DISCOVER codec.

  • A new type electrolyzing cell with slits on parallel plate electrodes and wire-to-cylinder type electrode system has been proposed instead of the conventional parallel plate type. An investigation was carried out on the effect of the number and size of slits on ion precipitation and oxidant generation characteristics, evidenced by eliminated space charge limiting action and by elevated electric fields in active interelectrode spacing. And it is also studied on the effect of the diameter of wire electrode to ion precipitation and oxidant generation characteristics. With electrode with 48 slits, very oxidants generation water of 3.1 [ppmm] and 19.0 [ppmm] in positive electrode side were obtained with tap water and 0.1 [wt%] NaCl dissolved tap waterfed. In addition, with wire-to-cylinder type electrode system, it is found that oxidant contained water of 0.48 [ppmm] and 5.46 [ppmm] in positive electrode side were obtained with tap water and 0.1 [wt%] NaCl dissolved tap water fed for the case of discharge electrode diameter of 0.5 [$mm{\phi}$]. Consequently, very high ion precipitation and dense oxidant generation characteristics can be realized by having slits on the electrodes of conventional cell as these slits increase the electric fields and decrease the space charge limiting actions in interelectrode spacing.

  • The employment of the induction generator is preferable in the natural energy utilization by the minimum maintenance and the mechanical robustness, Another merit is also expected when it is connected to the power network system, because constant-voltage and constant frequency (CVCF) power generation is easily realized in spite of the variation of the rotor speed. However the induction generator needs much amount of the reactive power that reduces power factor in the primary side. The improvement of power factor in the primary side requires large VAR compensator, this point is solved, the merit of the induction machine as a main generator will become more established. This paper proposes a novel approach where the secondary is controlled by a PWM inverter not only to get CVCF power but also to improve the primary power factor. Basically the inverter is controlled so that the field current is supplied from the secondary side in this approach. The required capacity of the inverter is small, because only the slip power is controlled in the secondary side. In the experimental system where the sea wave torque simulator is used, the power factor is well improved by the microcomputer controlled PWM inverter.

  • In this paper, a transcoding method with low computational complexity and high coding efficiency is proposed to transcode distributed video coding (DVC) bitstreams to H.264/AVC ones. For the proposed high-performance transcoding with low complexity, not only Wyner-Ziv frames but also key frames can be transcoded with motion vectors estimated in generation of side information. As a motion vector is estimated from a key frame to a prior key frame for side information generation, the motion vector can be used to encode the intra key frame as a predicted frame. Motion estimation is performed with two predicted motion vectors. One is the motion vector from side information generation and the other is median of motion vectors of neighboring blocks. The proposed method selects the best motion vector between two motion vectors based on rate-distortion optimization. Coding efficiency can be improved with a small size of search range, because a motion vector estimated in side information generation is used as an initial motion vector for transcoding. In the experimental results, complexity of transcoder is reduced about 12% and bitrate performance increases about 28.7%.
