  • A new load/displacement parameter method is developed for the cases that loads are applied to one or more points, and displacements of a structure are controlled at one or more points sinultaneously. The procedure exploits a generalized Riks method, which utilizes load/displacement parameters as scaling factors in order to analyze the post-buckling phenomena including snap-through or snap-back. A convergence characteristic is improved by employing new relaxation factors in incremental displacement parameter, particularly at the region where exhibits severe numerical instability. The improved performance is illustrated by means of numerical example.

  • Existing construction materials such as concrete and steel have chronic problems; deterioration and corrosion. Owing to its special features of light weight ‘ high durability, anti-corrosion, composite material used in civil infrastructure can not only solve fundamental problems of deterioration and corrosion, but also reduce both construction and maintenance cost significantly. After the fabrication of deck panel with snap-fit connection by pultrusion through composite design according to stacking sequence of composite laminates and structural analysis, performance of decks will be verified and evaluated by structural tests.

  • One of the major advantages of using engineering plastics is ease of part assembly through a locking mechanism known as a snap fit. The typical snap fit involves a short cantilever beam with a projection at the free end. which slides over a one way ramp on the mating part to lock in place. The tightness of the mechanism is determined by the lateral interference of the two sliding members If too small they become loose and can't hold together. while if too large. excessive force can be generated. causing failure of the cantilever beam during the assembly operation. Therefore. the accurate determination of the force-deflection relationship for cantilever beams is a key element in snap fit design. And also. the process of injection molding should be considered when cantilever beam is designed. But it is not easy for novice designers to design them appropriately because of the profound knowledge related to injection molding. In this paper. an intelligent design program has been developed and proposed to improve a conventional empirical design method.

  • This study using ABAQUS investigates the nonlinear vibration responses when thermal and random acoustic loads are applied simultaneously to the stiffened composite panels. The nonlinear vibration analyses are performed with changing the number of stiffeners, and layup condition of the skin panel. The panel and stiffeners both are modeled using shell elements. Thermal load (ΔT) is assumed to have the temperature gradient through the thickness direction of the stiffened composite panel. The random acoustic load is represented as stationary white-Gaussian random pressure with zero mean and uniform magnitude over the panels. The thermal postbuckling analysis is conducted using RIKS method, and the nonlinear dynamic analysis is performed using Hilber-HughesTaylor time integration method. When ΔT = 25.18 ℃ and SPL = 105 dB are applied to the stiffened composite panel, the effect of the number of stiffener is investigated, and the snap-through responses are observed for composite panels without stiffeners and with 1 and 3 stiffeners. For investigation of the effect of layup condition of the skin panel, when ΔT = 38.53 ℃ and SPL = 110 dB are applied to the stiffened composite panel, the snap-through responses are shown when the fiber angle of the skin panel is 0°, 30°, and 60°.

  • The punching shear strength of RC slabs is estimated analytically by the simple truss model. To avoid intrinsic difficulties in punching shear analysis of reinforced concrete slabs, the slabs were divided into three sub-structures as the punching cone and the remaining parts. The strength of the punching cone was evaluated by the stiffness of inclined strut. The stiffness of springs which control lateral displacement of the roller supports consists of the steel reinforcement which passed through the punching cone. Initial angle of struts was determined by curve fitting method of the experimental data with variable reinforcement ratio in order to compensate for uncertainties in the slab's punching shear, the simplification errors and the stiffness of the remaining sub-structures. The validity of computed punching shear strength by simple truss model was shown by comparing with experimental results. The punching shear strength, which was determined by snap-through critical load of shallow truss, can be used effectively to examine punching shear strength of RC slabs.

  • There are two kinds of instability phenomena for shell-type structures which are snap-through and bifurcation buckling. These are very sensitive according to the shape characteristics including rise-span ratio and especially shape initial imperfection. In this study, the equilibrium path of shallow sinusoidal arches supported by hinges at both ends is investigated to grasp the instability behavior of shell-type structures with initial imperfection. The Galerkin method is used to get the nonlinear discretized equation of governing differential equation considering geometric nonlinearity of arches and the perturbation method is also used to transform the nonlinear equation to incremental form.

  • For high-speed aircraft and high-speed civil transport planes, certain structural skin components are subjected to very large acoustic loads in an elevated thermal environment. In this study, we used the single-mode Fokker-Panck distribution to predict displacements of isotropic plates subject to thermo-acoustic combined load. The single mode was formulated to predict the nonlinear dynamic responses of postbuckled plates under acoustic random excitation. Acoustic random excitation was used with Gauss distribution. Some important effects of the snap-through motion on the dynamic responses of the postbuckled plates are described.

  • The room-temperature shapes of cured unsymmetric composite laminates have out-of-plane warping after autoclave processing. In addition, they exhibit two stable room-temperature configurations due to snap-through phenomena when the side length of laminates exceeds a critical value. The cured shapes of unsymmetric laminates are influenced by many environmental factors. Experiments show that the effect of too-plate cannot be ignored and has significant influence on the cured shape of unsymmetric laminates. In this present study, approximations to the strain fields are used in the expression for the total potential energy and the Rayleigh-Ritz method is applied. The slippage effects resulting from the interaction between the laminates and the tool-plate are considered. By introducing a dimensionless slippage coefficient and correlating the corresponding value with experimental results, the influence of processing parameters is investigated. Modeling is extended to predict curvatures of plate configurations with various aspect ratio.

  • This paper presents a bending propagating actuation using SMA (Shape Memory Alloy) spring for an effective shape transition of a flytrap-inspired soft morphing structure. The flytrap-inspired soft morphing structure is made from unsymmetric CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Prepreg) structure which shows bi-stability and snap-through phenomenon. For a thin and large curved bistable CFRP structure, SMA spring is more acceptable than SMA wire and piezoelectric actuator which used in previous investigations. A bending propagating actuation is proposed which can induce snap-through of the bi-stable CFRP structure effectively. From this research, effective shape transition of soft morphing structure is possible.

  • Nonlinear equations of structures are generally solved numerically by the iterative solution of linear equations. However, this iterative procedure diverges when the tangent stiffness is ill-conditioned which occurs near limit points. In other words, a major challenge with simple iterative methods is failure caused by a singular or near singular Jacobian matrix. In this paper, using the Newton-Raphson algorithm based on Davidenko's equations, the iterations can traverse the limit point without difficulty. It is argued that the propose algorithm may be both more computationally efficient and more robust compared to the other algorithm when tracing path through severe nonlinearities such as those associated with structural collapse. Two frames are analyzed using the proposed algorithm and the results are compared with the previous methods. The ability of the proposed method, particularly for tracing the limit points, is demonstrated by those numerical examples.
