  • This paper presents a novel hybrid carrier based space vector modulation for cascaded multilevel inverters. The proposed technique inherits the properties of carrier based space vector modulation and the fundamental frequency modulation strategy. The main characteristic of this modulation are the reduction of power loss, and improved harmonic performance. The carrier based space vector modulation algorithm is implemented with a TMS320F2407 digital signal processor. A Xilinx Complex Programmable Logic Device is used to develop the hybrid PWM control algorithm and it is integrated with a digital signal processor for hybrid carrier based space vector PWM generation. The inverter offers less weighted total harmonic distortion and it operates with equal electrostatic and electromagnetic stress among the power devices. The feasibility of the proposed technique is verified by spectral analysis, simulation, and experimental results.

  • A novel space vector modulation strategy in the non-orthogonal three-dimensional coordinate system for multi-level three-phase four-wire inverters is proposed in this paper. This new non-orthogonal three-dimensional space vector modulation converts original trigonometric functions in the orthogonal three-dimensional space coordinate into simple algebraic operations, which greatly reduces the algorithm complexity of three-dimensional space vector modulation and preserves the independent control of the zero-sequence component. Experimental results have verified the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed three-dimensional space vector modulation in the new non-orthogonal three-dimensional coordinate system.

  • In this paper, we suggest a new space vector PWM modulation method with very short processing time which does not need identification of nearest three vectors(NTV) and duty ratio for each vector. The suggested PWM method makes mean value of phase voltage to be same as reference during every modulation period by use of a triangle in small hexagon on multi-level vector space. This paper described the suggested modulation method can be successfully applied to the space vector modulation use of multi-level inverter by computer simulations and experiments.

  • This paper presents an optimized space vector pulse-width modulation (OSVPWM) technique for a five-level cascaded H-bridge (CHB) inverter. The space vector diagram of the five-level CHB inverter is optimized by resolving it into inner and outer two-level space vector hexagons. Unlike conventional space vector topology, the proposed technique significantly reduces the involved computational time and efforts without compromising the performance of the five-level CHB inverter. A further optimized (FOSVPWM) technique is also presented in this paper, which significantly reduces the complexity and computational efforts. The developed techniques are verified through MATLAB/SIMULINK. Results are compared with sinusoidal pulse-width modulation (SPWM) to prove the validity of the proposed technique. The proposed simulation system is realized by using an XC3S400 field-programmable gate array from Xilinx, Inc. The experiment results are then presented for verification.

  • This paper presents the implementation of two-arm modulation (TAM) technique for the independent control of a two-induction motor drive fed by a five-leg inverter (FLI). A carrier-based space vector pulse width modulation technique for TAM is proposed to generate switching signals for FLI. Two independent three-phase space vector modulators are utilized to control two motors. The motor drive system applies two separate indirect field-oriented control methods. The stationary voltage outputs from the vector control are synthesized in the three-phase space vector modulator to generate switching signals for FLI. The performance of the independent control of the motors and the voltage utilization factor are likewise analyzed. Simulation and experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed method for the independent control of the two-motor drive system. The proposed technique is successfully validated by dSPACE DS1103 experimental work.

  • In this paper, the three modified space vector modulation methods are suggested in order to control effectively the shoot-through time at Z-source inverter. Both the switching patterns of three modulation methods and the modulation signals with a variation of shoot-through time are analyzed. The optimum modified space vector modulation method is determined by both the control range of the shoot-through time and the symmetry of the switching pattern and modulation signal. The performances of modulation methods are verified with the simulation results with 32-bit DSP.

  • This study investigates a bidirectional quasi-Z-source inverter (Bq-ZSI) system with bidirectional power transfer capability and a modified space vector modulation scheme for reducing the ripple of the inductor current. By replacing the diode in the impedance network with an active switch, the power flow can be bidirectional. The average inductor current of the Bq-ZSI network is negative in the regenerative braking mode, thereby regenerating the power. In addition, modified space vector modulation scheme is applied to the Bq-ZSI to control shoot-through time effectively. A 5 kW prototype is built and tested to implement the proposed system. Experimental results show that the Bq-ZSI system is capable of regenerative braking of the induction motor and that the modified space vector modulation method is efficient.

  • A novel Virtual Space Vector (VSV) modulation strategy for complete control of potential neutral point (NP) issues is proposed in this paper. The neutral point potential balancing problems of multi-level converters, which include elimination of low frequency oscillations and self-balancing for NP dc unbalance, are investigated first. Then a set of improved virtual space vectors with dynamic adjustment factors are introduced and a multi-objective optimization algorithm which aims to optimize these adjustment factors is presented in this paper. The improved virtual space vectors and the multi-objective optimization algorithm constitute the novel Virtual Space Vector modulation. The proposed novel Virtual Space Vector modulation can simultaneously recover NP dc unbalance and eliminate low frequency oscillations of the neutral point. Experiment results show that the proposed strategy has excellent performance, and that both of the neutral point potential issues can be solved.

  • The switching dead time avoiding a bridge leg short circuit in PWM voltage source inverter produces distortions of the controlling inverter output performance such as current waveform, voltage vector, and torque. In this paper, the influence of dead time is investigated. The on-line space voltage vector modulation method is used for current controller. It is possible to compensate dead time by space voltage vector modulation which generates additional pulse compensating voltage distortion caused by dead time. In addition, narrow pulse which is generally neglected can be compensated. All the algorithms, including field-oriented control are performed by one chip microprocessor 80C196MC and DSP TMS320C31. Experimental results probe that the proposed scheme provides a good inverter output performance.
