  • This paper describes the speckle shearing interferometry, a non-destructive optical method, for quantitative estimation of void defect and monitoring separation defect inside of a pneumatic tire. Previous shearing interferometry has not supplied quantitative result of inside defect, due to effective factors. In the study, factors related to the details of an inside defect are classified and optimized with pipeline simulator. The size and the shape of defect can be estimated accurately to find a critical point and also is closely related with shearing direction. The technique is applied for quantitative estimation of defects inside of a pneumatic tire. The actual traveling tire is monitored to reveal the cause of separation and the starting points. And also unknown void defects on tread are inspected and the size and shape of defects are estimated which has good agreement with the result of visual inspection.

  • In this paper, we used a split-lens speckle shear interferometer using a double speckle interferometer, which enables continuous measurement of the deformation. We made two identical specklegrams corresponding to an object. With this method we could detect the measuring limits of the deformation for various shears. This experimental results showed that the measuring limits of a split-lens speckle shear interferometer are similar to the measuring limits of a double exposure speckle interferometer.

  • This paper describes a measuring method of vibration mode shapes by the Electronic Shearography. This method called the speckle interferometer has many merits in practical use, such as low sensitivity to environmental noise, low limit of coherent-length and simple optical configuration. In this study, we developed Michelson-type shearing interferometer provided with a phase stepping mirror and with a bias modulation mirror to quantify the vibration gradient fields. Results of application to a simple cantilever plate show that the vibration amplitude fields obtained are in good agreement with those of the electronic speckle pattern interferometry (ESPI).

  • Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry(ESPI) is a common method for measuring out-of-plane deformation and in-plane deformation and applied for vibration analysis and strain/stress analysis. However, ESPI is sensitive to environmental disturbance, which provide the limitation of industrial application. On the other hand, Shearography based on shearing interferometer which is insensitive to vibration disturbance can directly measure the first derivative of out-of-plane deformation. In this paper a technique that extract out-of-plane deformation from results of shearography by numerical processing is proposed and measurement results of ESPI and Shearoraphy are compared quantitatively.

  • The paper describes the quantitative determination of out-of-plane displacement from result of Shearogrpahy, which can measure the first-order partial derivative of out-of-plane displacement directly. However, the differential sensitivity of Shearography is related to the amount of shearing, which is manually adjustable in optical interferometer and affects the quantitative determination. The relationship between those is inspected by comparing ESPI with Shearography. From the result, the amount of shearing plays a modulation factor of out-of-plane displacement and small amount of shearing gives good agreement with out-of-plane displacement.

  • Pressure vessels are used in various industrial fields. If a defect occurs on the inner or outer surface of a pressure vessel, it may cause a massive accident. A defect on the outer surface can be detected by visual inspection. However, a defect on the inner surface is generally impossible to detect with visual inspection. Nondestructive testing can be used to detect this type of defect. Laser speckle shearing interferometry is one nondestructive testing method that can optically detect a defect; its advantages include noncontact, full field, and real time inspection. This study evaluated the detectable size for an internal defect of a pressure vessel. The material of the pressure vessel was ASTM A53 Gr.B. The internal defect was detected when the pressure vessel was loaded by internal pressure controlled by a pneumatic system. The internal pressure was controlled from 0.2 MPa to 0.6 MPa in increments of 0.2 MPa. The results confirmed that an internal defect with a 25 % defect depth could be detected even at 0.2 MPa pressure variation.

  • Digital shearography, a speckle pattern method is based on the superposition of two laterally sheared images. Therefore, object points which are positioned in some distance from each other are superposed in the image plane. This shearography, one of NDT methods without contact, is able to inspect defects in pipelines and pressure vessels that are used in nuclear power plants. This is can inspect whole fields and has a low sensitivity to environmental noise. Because optical setting is very simple, it has a little exhaustion of time, cost and man power. And also it can find a defect position through real time monitoring of a part. This paper, finds out the relationship among shearing quantity image quality and defect size with this method.

  • In this study, shearography and ESPI have been used for quantitative analysis of an inside crack of pipeline and both of them appeared suitable to qualitatively detect inside crack. However, shearography needs several effective factors including the amount of shearing, shearing direction and induced load for the quantitative evaluation of the inside crack. In this study, the factors were optimized for the quantitative analysis and the site of cracks has been determined. Although the effective factors in shearography has been optimized, it is difficult to determine the factors exactly because they are related to the details of tracks. On the other hand, ESPI is independent on the details of a crack and only the induced load plays an important role. The out-of-plane displacement was measured under the optimized load and the measured were numerically differentiated, which resulted in an equivalent to the shearogram. The size of cracks can be determined quantitatively without any detail of a crack.

  • In recent years, shearogrpahy has significantly improved capabilities In the areas of unbend and separation detection in tires. Although shearography has many advantages fur qualitative evaluation, the technique remains the problem of quantitative analysis of inside defects, because shearography needs several effective factors including the amount of shearing, shearine direction and induced load, which exist as barrier for the quantitative analysis of inside defects. Since the factors are highly dependent on inspectors skill and also affect the in-situ workability. The factors were optimized and the size of cracks inside of pipeline and tire has been quantitatively determined.

  • Dual-function interferometer is an interferometer that has all features of ESPI (electronic speckle pattern interferometry) and shearography in one interferometer setup. The deformatiou of an object is directly obtained by ESPI while the slope of the deformation of an object is obtained by shearography. If the result of shearography is divided by shearing amount and integrated by numerical analyzing, then finally the reconstructed deformation of an object that is the same as the results directly obtained by ESPI can be measured by shearography. In this study, rubber and alruminum plates are used as specimen and its out-of-plane deformation is measured by ESPI and shearography setup of the dual-function interferometer. Each of the results obtained by ESPI and shearography is compared by using numerical integration to the result of shearography. From this study, it is confirmed that the reconstructed deformation results obtained by numerical integration good agree with the results obtained by ESPI.
