  • Filament Winding Process is a comparatively simple operation in which continuous reinforcements in the form of roving are wound over a rotating mandrel. It is well established and versatile method for storage tanks and pipes for the chemical and other industries. In this study, tensile strength of a filament wound ring specimens were evaluated by a split disk test fixture and a dress disk test fixture. The results obtained from experiments were compared with the theoretical values from the rule of mixtures. The purpose of this paper is the suggestion of an appropriate test method for the evaluation of tensile properties of filament wound structures. The tensile strength of a ring specimen tested by the dress disk test showed better agreement with the theoretical values than those tested by the split disk test because of higher stress concentration in edges of a split disk test fixture. The results showed that the tensile strength of a ring specimen was influenced by the geometry of test fixture, the continuity of fibers, fiber-tension, fiber-end and stress concentration in specimen.

  • In this study, tensile strength and modulus were evaluated for a filament wound ring specimen by split disk test and compared with the theoretical values obtained by the rule of mixtures. The circumferentially wound ring specimens were prepared from 4 types of material systems. The results showed that the measured strengths of the composite systems were considerably lower than the theoretical values due to the local bending stresses around the split disk edges. for the measurement of elastic moduli of the filament wound ring specimens, the effect of friction on the strain of the ring must be taken into account. But the effect of friction between the split disk fixture and the ring specimen can be eliminated by averaging the moduli for loading and unloading state with maintaining the same crosshead rates. The measured elastic moduli of ring specimens showed very good agreement with the theoretical values.

  • Theoretical and experimental study of the unconfined penetration (UP) test was conducted to suggest a new test method (referred to as IUP, Improved Unconfined Penetration) for determination of the tensile strength of compacted sand-bentonite mixtures. The tensile strength of compacted mixtures can be calculated from limit analysis based on the theory of perfect plasticity. The measurement errors in new test method were reduced by improving the UP device. Preliminary experiment results indicate that the tensile strength increases with increasing the disk size, loading rate and pH level. In addition, the disk diameter with 25.4 mm and the loading rate with 0.5%/min~1%/min are most suitable condition for the IUP test. The reliability of IPU test was verified by through the fact that good agreement between the IUP and conventional split tensile test results is observed.

  • Processing parameters of filament winding were investigated by using design of experiment. To understand 4 main effects(fiber tension, impregnation pressure, processing rate, and temperature) and 3 interactions, $L_{27}(3^{13})$ orthogonal array table was adopted. The used materials were carbon fiber and epoxy resin. Split disk test and short-beam test, which are the general test methods for filament wound composite material, were selected as evaluation methods for a filament would part. The optimal processing parameters for the filament winding were easily found through the analysis of variance of the experimental results.

  • The soil samples used in this study were prepared with the residual granite soils passed through the #4 sieve and obtained from Pocheon in Gyeonggi-Ki do. Specifically, five types of samples were prepared. Sample A which is a natural state soil was classified as SM according to the uses. Samples of B, C, D, and E were prepared by mixing Sample A with bentonite and were classified as SC according to the uses. The plasticity indexes of samples B, C, D, and E were 15, 25, 30, and 40, respectively. The specimens, whose dimensions are 100mm by 127.5mm, were prepared by A method of ASTM D 698 with the Proctor mold. In experiments, the loading with the 1%/min was applied. Four different disk diameters, 13mm, 26mm, 38mm, and 52mm were used in the Improved Unconfined Penetration (IUP) tests. To compare the tensile strengths, the split tensile tests were also conducted on the same specimens used for the IUP tests. To find out the effects of moisture contents, plasticity Index of specimens on the tensile strength, six different water contents were used for making a specimen.

  • The relationship of the winding process variables and the mechanical properties of filament wound composites is investigated experimentally. The winding process variables considered are the fiber tensions and the fiber ends. The filament wound ring specimens are fabricated using 3-axis controlled filament winding machine. Two types of carbon fibers, TZ-507 and IZ-40, are used as reinforcements and epoxy for filament winding is used as resin. During the winding process, the fiber tensions are varied from 0.5kgf to 3.0kgf, and the number of the fiber ends are varied from 1 to 6. The fiber volume fractions and the void contents for the ring specimens are measured through the resin digestion. The mechanical properties of the ring specimens are also evaluated by the split disk test. The test results show that the winding process variables affect the fiber volume fractions and the void contents of the ring specimens, which result in the variation of the tensile properties of the ring specimens. Therefore, suitable winding process variables should be applied to maximize the structural performance and the productivity for filament wound structures.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine an effect of fluoride recharging on fluoride release and surface change of fluoride-releasing restorative materials. Six commercially available fluoride releasing restorative materials (Fuji II LC Improved: FL, Compoglass F: CF, Dyract AP: DA, F2000: FT, Gradia Direct: GD, and Tetric Ceram: TC) were selected as experimental materials. Disk specimens were fabricated with split teflon mold to the final dimensions of 15 mm in diameter and 1 mm in thickness. Ten samples of each material were fabricated and stored in deionized water at $37^{\circ}C{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ for 3 months. Before fluoride recharging, all specimens were polished sequentially from #800 to #2000 emery papers. Fluoride recharging was done at 5-day interval using 2.0% NaF gel. The release of fluoride into the storage water was monitored using a fluoride ion electrode. Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey's multiple range test. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. Fluoride recharge capability were FL > CF > DA and TC group after 12 times exposure to 2.0% NaF gel (P<0.05). 2. All the experimental materials, except for FT group, showed the increase of fluoride release and surface roughness. 3. Fluoride-releasing rates returned to base line within 3 days.
