  • Using ultrasonic standing waves, micro particles submerged or flowing in fluid can be manipulated. Due to acoustic radiation force of ultrasound, particles are forced to move to pressure nodal or antinodal lines. In this work, we propose a method to control the position of micro particle in a flow by adjusting the frequency of the standing wave. To this end, standing wave field generation system including a few millimeter thick micro channel was established using an immersible ultrasonic transducer. The present generation system works valid in a frequency range between 2.0 MHz and 2.5 MHz. We observed the SiC particles in water moved to pressure nodal lines by the standing wave. The effect of the channel thickness and operating frequency was also investigated. Interestingly, it was shown that the operating frequency have a close relation with the location of the pressure nodal line. Consequently, it fan be said that the position of particle movement rail be controlled by adjusting the ultrasound frequency. The maximum range of the controllable position was about 261 micrometers under the given condition. The resulted observations reveal the possibility of various applications of the ultrasonic standing wave to the manipulation of particles submerged in a fluid.

  • We developed a new standing wave type ultrasonic linear motor that can be driven bi-directionally. The operation principle of the motor was derived in an analytical form and the detailed structure was designed by the finite element method. Based on the design, a motor sample and a driving circuit were fabricated, and validity of the structure was verified through experiments.

  • We introduce a scheme with a maximized efficiency of detecting atoms passing through an optical standing-wave mode cavity. Consider a standing-wave optical cavity illuminated by a weak probe beam through one of its mirrors where the transmission through the other mirror is monitored by a photodetector. If an atom is put in the cavity, the atom-cavity coupling shifts the resonance frequency of the system via the so-called normal mode splitting, and thereby the transmission power will drop. In fact, this type of atom detection scheme has been used in recent single atom trap experiments In practice, however, the field in a standing-wave mode will have a geometrical structure having nodes and antinodes that when the atom traverses the cavity through one of the nodes, there will be no such effect of atom-field interaction. • An investigation into the influence of ultrasonic standing wave on the structural behavior of propane/air premixed flame has been made to get a clue to the combustion reaction acceleration and combustion instability. Visualization technique utilizing the Schlieren photography was employed for the observation of structural variation of the flame reaction zone. Evolutionary characteristics of the flame front were caught by the high-speed Schlieren image, through which local flame velocity of the moving front were analyzed in detail.

  • In this research we have used the definition of standard fractional vector cross product to obtain fractional curl and fractional field of a standing wave, a travelling wave, a transverse wave, a vector field in xy plane, a complex vector field and an electric field. Fractional curl and fractional field for a complex order are also discussed. We have supported the study with calculation of impedance at γ = 0, 0 < γ < 1, γ = 1. The formula discussed in this paper are useful for study of polarization, reflection, impedance, boundary conditions where fractional solutions have applications.

  • An experimental results on the dynamic characteristics of hydrocarbon/air premixed flames with ultrasonic standing waves are presented and compared. Images of the propagating flames were acquired by using a high-speed camera, and the flame behavior of methane/air and propane/air premixed flame were closely scrutinized through the image post-processing. At the fuel-lean conditions, the flame propagation velocity increased due to the intervention of the ultrasonic standing wave and vice versa at the fuel-rich conditions.

  • Cylindrical monopole antenna is one of most promising candidates for multi-band applications such as PCS, WLAN, DMB, and UWB wireless services. In this research, we demonstrate that there exist two types of current distributions according to the exciting frequency in a double band cylindrical monopole antenna, in which double resonance is achieved by adjusting the coupling structure of the antenna base. The operating modes of current distributions are identified from CST software simulations, the standing wave mode in a lower band and the traveling wave mode in a higher band. Also it is noticed that the mode behavior is quite similar to a helical antenna, a standing-wave (resonance) mode and a traveling-wave (non-resonance) mode according to the electrical dimensions of antenna. The effective ranges for operating modes and design formulas of the double band antenna are derived from simulation and measured results.

  • A numerical method using the truncated Fourier series is presented to predict the wave potential and water surface profile for two dimensional nonlinear standing waves. The unknown coefficients of the series are to be determined through the Newton solution of nonlinear simultaneous equations given by the governing equation and boundary conditions of the problem. In order to prove the effectiveness of the present method. an existing Stokes-like perturbation method is considered together, and a hydraulic experiment for measuring water surface profile and wave pressure is performed as well. The results are such that the present method can generally give exact solutions even for relatively big wave stiffness regardless of the water depth condition. It also demonstrates its validity by showing double humps in the crest of temporal wave pressure profile which normally appear in strongly nonlinear standing waves.

  • Time seres of suspended sediment concentration, surface elevation and velocity were measured and analysed to investigate the role of waves and the predominance of infra-gravity wave component for sediment suspension phenomena in the surf zone. For the investigation in detail, we adopted the cross spectral analysis method between sediment concentration and the characteristic values of wave, and ensemble average analysis method about long-period wave component, which is dominant to sediment suspension in the measurement point. The obtained results are summarized as follows: 1) The relationship between sediment concentration and the characteristic values of wave is stronger for the long-period standing wave components(about 60s and 30s) than the long wave components(about 100s), which have the most energetic power, 2) and also, it is cleared that sediment concentration is increased in the case of the phase, the velocity components of the first mode long-period standing wave(60sec) were accelerated toward on-shore direction, that is, the water surface in offshore side is higher than on-shore side.
