Honeycomb sandwich composite(HSC) structures have been widely used in aircraft and military industry owing to their light weight and high stiffness. Mechanical properties of honeycomb core materials are needed for accurate analysis of the sandwich composites. In this study. theoretical formula for effective elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio of honeycomb core materials was established using an energy method considering the bending, axial and shear deformations of honeycomb core walls. Finite-element analysis results obtained by using commercial FEA code, ABAQUS 6.3 were comparable to the theoretical ones. In addition, we performed tensile test of HSC plates and analyzed deformation behaviors and interlaminar stresses through its FEA simulation. An increased shear stress along the interface between surface and honeycomb core layers was shown to be the main reason for interfacial delamination in HSC plate under tensile loading.

This paper presents the experimental results of axially loaded stub columns of slender steel hollow square section(SHS) strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced polymers(CFRP) sheets. 6 specimens were fabricated and the main parameters were: width-thickness ratio(b/t) and CFRP retrofitting. From the tests, it was observed that two sides would typically buckle outward and the other two sides would buckle inward. A maximum increase of 33% was achieved in axial-load capacity. Also, stiffness and ductility index(DI) were compared between unretrofitted specimens and retrofitted specimens. In the last section, a prediction formula of the ultimate strength developed using the experimental results is presented.
The fundamental period is an important parameter for seismic design and seismic risk assessment of building structures. In this paper, a simplified theoretical method to predict the fundamental period of masonry infilled reinforced concrete (RC) frame is developed based on the basic theory of engineering mechanics. The different configurations of the RC frame as well as masonry walls were taken into account in the developed method. The fundamental period of the infilled structure is calculated according to the integration of the lateral stiffness of the RC frame and masonry walls along the height. A correction coefficient is considered to control the error for the period estimation, and it is determined according to the multiple linear regression analysis. The corrected formula is verified by shaking table tests on two masonry infilled RC frame models, and the errors between the estimated and test period are 2.3% and 23.2%. Finally, a probability-based method is proposed for the corrected formula, and it allows the structural engineers to select an appropriate fundamental period with a certain safety redundancy. The proposed method can be quickly and flexibly used for prediction, and it can be hand-calculated and easily understood. Thus it would be a good choice in determining the fundamental period of RC frames infilled with masonry wall structures in engineering practice instead of the existing methods.

Textile composite materials have been widely applied in aerospace structures due to their various advantages such as high specific stiffnesses and strengths, better out-of-plane performances, impact and delamination resistances, and net shape fabrications. In this paper, a modified geometric model of repeating unit cell (RUC) is suggested based on the Naik's model for 2D plain weave textile composites. The RUC geometry is defined by various parameters. The proposed model considers another parameter which is a gap length between adjacent yarns. The effective stiffnesses are predicted by using the yarn slicing technique and stress averaging technique based on iso-strain assumption. And the stiffnesses of RUC are evaluated by adjusting the gap ratio and verified by comparing with Naik's model and experimental data for 2D plain weave composite specimens.

Computational multibody models of the elbow can provide a versatile tool to study joint mechanics, cartilage loading, ligament function and the effects of joint trauma and orthopaedic repair. An efficiently developed computational model can assist surgeons and other investigators in the design and evaluation of treatments for elbow injuries, and contribute to improvements in patient care. The purpose of this study was to develop an anatomically correct elbow joint model and validate the model against experimental data. The elbow model was constrained by multiple bundles of non-linear ligaments, three-dimensional deformable contacts between articulating geometries, and applied external loads. The developed anatomical computational models of the joint can then be incorporated into neuro-musculoskeletal models within a multibody framework. In the approach presented here, volume images of two cadaver elbows were generated by computed tomography (CT) and one elbow by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to construct the three-dimensional bone geometries for the model. The ligaments and triceps tendon were represented with non-linear spring-damper elements as a function of stiffness, ligament length and ligament zero-load length. Articular cartilage was represented as uniform thickness solids that allowed prediction of compliant contact forces. As a final step, the subject specific model was validated by comparing predicted kinematics and triceps tendon forces to experimentally obtained data of the identically loaded cadaver elbow. The maximum root mean square (RMS) error between the predicted and measured kinematics during the complete testing cycle was 4.9 mm medial-lateral translational of the radius relative to the humerus (for Specimen 2 in this study) and 5.30 internal-external rotation of the radius relative to the humerus (for Specimen 3 in this study). The maximum RMS error for triceps tendon force was 7.6 N (for Specimen 3).

The structural anisotropy and heterogeneity of rock mass, caused by discontinuities and weak zones, have a great influence on the deformation behavior of a tunnel. A tunnel construction in these complex ground conditions is very difficult. No matter how excellent a geological investigation is, local uncertainties of rock mass conditions still remain. Under these uncertain circumstances, an accurate forecast of the ground conditions ahead of the advancing tunnel face is indispensable to a safe and economic tunnel construction. This paper presents the effect of anisotropy and heterogeneity of the rock masses to be excavated by numerical analysis. The influences of distance from weak zone, the size or dimension, the different stiffness and the orientation of weak zones are analysed by 3-D finite element analysis. By analysing these numerical results, the tunnel behavior due to excavation can be well understood and the prediction of rock mass condition ahead of the tunnel face can be possible.

This paper presents an analytical prediction of the hysteresis behavior of reinforced concrete long column with rectangular section under the cyclic loading state. The mechanical characteristic of cracked concrete and reinforcing bar in concrete has been modeled, considering the bond effect between reinforcing bar and concrete, the effect of aggregate interlocking at crack surface and the stiffness degradation after the crack has taken place. The strength increase of concrete due to the lateral confining reinforcement has been also taken into account to model the confined concrete. The formulation of these models for concrete and reinforcing bar has been based on the smeared crack concept that the stress-strain relationship of reinforced concrete element would be defined using the average values. In addition to the material nonlinear properties, the algorithm for large displacement problem that may give an additional deformation has been formulated using total Lagrangian formulation. The analytically predicted behavior was compared with test result and they showed good agreement in overall behavior.

An in-cabinet response spectrum should be generated to perform the seismic qualification of devices and instruments mounted inside safety-related electrical equipment installed in nuclear power plants. The response spectrum is available by obtaining accurate seismic responses at the device mounting location of the cabinet. The dynamic behavior of most of electrical equipment may not be easily analyzed due to their complex mass and stiffness distributions. Considering these facts, this study proposes a procedure to estimate the seismic responses of a structure by a combination of a test and subsequent analysis. This technique firstly constructs the modal equations of the structure by using the experiment modal parameters obtained from the impact test. Then the seismic responses of the structure may be calculated by a mode superposition method. A simple steel frame structure was fabricated as a specimen for the validation of the proposed method. The seismic responses of the specimen were estimated by using the proposed technique and compared with the measurements obtained from the shaking table tests. The study results show that it is possible to accurately estimate the seismic response of the structure by using the experimental modal parameters obtained from the impact test.
The current trends in steel construction intend to use tapered sections to minimize as much as possible the use of excess material. This can be done by choosing the cross-sections to be as economical as possible, leaving the classical approach of using prismatic members. In addition, it is important to predict the buckling behavior of tapered member with large depth-to-thickness ratio in order to prevent the collapse of PEB system subjected to overloads. An experimental investigation of buckling behavior of tapered beam was presented. The primary test parameter was depth-to-thickness ratio and taper ratio. Using initial stiffness and load-carrying capacity proposed by current provision, the simple plastic hinge method using modified Yoda's model and finite element analysis, the prediction of a moment-rotation curve of linearly tapered member was presented. Moreover, comparisons between analytical and experimental data for moment-rotation curves were accomplished.
Suction affects the unsaturated soil as the negative pore pressure, and leads to increases of the yield stress and the plastic shear stiffness of the soil skeleton due to the growth in interparticle stress. Hence, in this study, in order to account for these effects of suction under the dynamic loading condition such as the earthquake, the element simulation of the cyclic triaxial test using induced stress-strain relation based on cyclic elasto-plastic constitutive model extended for unsaturated soil considering the $1^{st}$ and the $2^{nd}$ yield functions was conducted. Through the stress path, stress-strain relation and relation between volumetric strain and axial strain, it was seen in all the cases that the simulation results demonstrated a good agreement with the experimental results. It is expected that the results of this study possibly contribute to the accuracy improvement on the prediction of unsaturated soil behavior under the dynamic loading condition.
