The Experimental Study of the Performance of the Rotary Stirling refrigerator (회전압축기형 스털링냉동기의 성능에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • The Stirling refrigerators have been widely used for the cooling of the infrared detector and HTS to the cryogenic temperature. The Stirling refrigerator with the rotary compressor are applicable to the cooling device for the compact mobile thermal imaging system, because the refrigerators have the compact structure and light weight. The typical performance factors of the Stirling refrigerator are the cool-down time, cooling capacity at the desired temperature and the input power. And the above performance factors are depends on the thermal insulation characteristics of the Dewar. In this study, the steady thermal load of the Dewar and the performance of the Stirling refrigerator were measured. The results show the dependency of the input power and the charging pressure on the performance of the refrigerator.

  • The split-type free displacer Stirling refrigerators have been widely used for the cooling of infrared sensors and HTS filters. The thermodynamic and electric performance of the Stirling refrigerator is depending on the design and operating parameters. In the Stirling refrigerator with a free displacer, the refrigeration power is a function of the pressure wave in the expansion space, dynamics of a displacer, driving frequency, and etc.. In this study, the analysis of the small Stirling refrigerator was performed to investigate the effects of design parameters on the cooling capacity. The results show the effects of charging pressure, driving frequency, cold end temperature, natural frequency of a displacer and volume of expansion space on the performance of the Stirling refrigerator.

  • Performance of integral type Stirling refrigerator used for cooling infrared detector is affected by principal factors such as design factors and operating factors. Operating factors include charging pressure and operating frequency. The purpose of this paper is to examine the basic design analysis on the integral type Stirling refrigerator and the changes in performance through experiments on operating factors.

  • A Finkelstein adiabatic analysis is performed for Stirling refrigerator with real gas properties of helium. The mass balance and the energy balance equations are formulated into the form that is convenient for incorporating an available computer code of the helium properties. The differential equations are solved numerically. The calculated coefficient of performance(COP) and the pressure variation are compared with the results obtained when helium is assumed to be an ideal gas. The relative errors in COP are presented as functions of the refrigeration temperature and the maximum cycle pressure.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of the linear compressor for Stirling refrigerator. To ensure high performance and long life of the FPFD(Free Piston. Free Displacer) type Stirling refrigerator, the operating parameters of the linear compressor should be optimized. The experimental results show that the operating frequency of the linear compressor has significant effect on the input power characteristics. and that the compressor with higher charging pressure of working fluid has high pressure ratio. For the high performance of the linear compressor. compressor should be operated at the resonance frequency with respect to the given charging pressure.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the charging gas effect on the resonance and performance characteristics of the linear compressor for small scale FPFD Stirling refrigerator. To ensure high performance of FPFD type Stirling refrigerator, the operating frequency of the refrigerator should be around the natural frequency of compressor. The gas spring effect which is induced from Pressure change in cylinder due to motion of pistons has significant effect on the natural frequency of the compressor. The numerical results show the linear compressor has high natural frequency when the charging pressure of working fluid is high and the stroke of compressor, current, input power and efficiency of compressor were shown with different operating conditions.

  • A Stirling cryocooler is relatively compact, reliable, commercially available, and uses helium as a working fluid. The FPFD stirling cryocooler consists of two compressor pistons driven by linear motors which makes pressure waves and a pneumatically driven displacer piston with regenerator. A free piston and free displacer(FPFD) Stirling cryocooler for cooling infrared and cryo-sensors is currently under development at KIMM(Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials). In order to evaluate the feasibility of using a linear motor driving cryocooler, prototype Stirling cryocooler with a nominal cooling capacity of 0.5W at 80K was designed, fabricated and tested. The prototype has achieved no load temperature of 51K and cooling power of 0.33W.

  • The linear compressor have been widely used for pressure wave generation in the Stirling cryocooler and Stirling type pulse tube cryocooler for tactical purpose. The linear compressor has small and compact structure, and long life due to having non-contact sealing mechanism. and the pressure drop through regenerator was ver important role in the motion of displacer in the expander of the Stirling cryocooler. In this study, the characteristic of the linear compressor and the pressure drop through regenerator in the expander was experimentally investigated. The results show the resonance of the compressor is very important to get maximum performance. and the gas spring force in the compression space of the compressor has effect on the characteristic of reonance. and the results show the pressure drop through regenerator is very small than operating pressure change.

  • Cryogenic refrigerator system is necessary for cooling the superconducting rotor. Among the various cryogenic refrigerator systems, on-board hybrid pulse tube cryocooler is designed for cooling the superconducting rotor. Hybrid pulse tube cryocooler is composed of pulse tube cryocooler and Stirling cryocooler. This Stirling cryocooler precools the middle point of regenerator to obtain lower temperature at cold part of pulse tube cryocooler. In this paper, only Stirling cryocooler is on-boarded then rotated by motor for various rotating speeds and heat loads at cold part of Stilting cryocooler. Through this experiment the feasibility of the on-board cryocooler is investigated.
