  • Purpose : This study was to determine the levels of environmental stressor, posttraumatic stress disorder, and quality of life in intensive care units (ICU) survivors after intensive care, and to explore the factors affecting posttraumatic stress disorder and quality of life. Methods: With a longitudinal survey design, data were collected from 116 patients who were discharged from the ICU of a university hospital. The environmental stressor, posttraumatic stress disorder, and quality of life were measured immediately following and 1 month after the ICU discharge. Results: Of all the subjects, 16.4% experienced posttraumatic stress disorder after discharge. Multiple regression analysis revealed that ICU environmental stressors, experience of ICU readmission, using psychotropic drugs and narcotic analgesics, and ICU admission after surgery or cardiac intervention accounted for 22.2% of posttraumatic stress disorder. Posttraumatic stress disorder and sedation status when entering ICU accounted for 28.3% of the quality of life 1 month after ICU discharge. Conclusion: Nursing interventions focused on ICU environmental stressors would not only reduce environmental stress but also contribute to the reduction of posttraumatic stress disorder and later improvement of quality of life.

Method: The subjects of this study consisted of 210 hemodialysis patients. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, pearson's correlation coefficient, or stepwise multiple regression analysis by using SPSS/PC+ program. Result: Sleep disorder degree averaged 2.24. Stress of hemodialysis patients averaged 2.52. Depression degree of hemodialysis patients averaged 1.14. There was significant difference in sleep disorder according to age, marriage status, education, family income and help-givers. Sleep disorder was significantly associated with stress and depression. Stress, depression and marriage status explained 31.3% of the variance in the sleep disorder. Conclusion: In conclusion, the sleep disorder of hemodialysis patients is the nursing problem. The sleep disorder degree relates with stress, depression. Especially, it is strongly affected by stress among them.

  • Traumatic brain injury(TBI) used to be developed after a severe traumatic event. Therefore TBI usually induces acute or chronic stress reaction. I reviewed the concept, epidemiology, biological or psychosocial etiology, diagnosis and treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and discussed about PTSD or stress reaction after TBI. Early evaluation and management of stress reaction after TBI are important.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to identify the relationship between the experiences of workplace violence and post-traumatic stress disorder and the moderating effect of resilience and social support at work on the relationship in tertiary hospital nurses. Methods: This was a descriptive correlation study to confirm the moderating effect of resilience and social support at work on the factors affecting post-traumatic stress disorder for nurses who have experienced violence. A total of 146 registered nurses were recruited from a tertiary hospital from March to July 2020. The Participants who worked for more than one year and experienced violence at work completed self-reported questionnaires that measured the experiences of workplace violence and post-traumatic stress disorder, resilience, social support at work, and demographic information. The collected data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and hierarchical regression analysis. Results: The nurses experienced verbal abuse an average of 3.70±2.06 times a week, physical threat an average of 2.30±1.71 times a month, and physical assault an average of 0.76±0.82 times a year. The Experiences of workplace violence were significantly increased post-traumatic stress disorder. The result also showed that resilience moderated the relationship between the experience of verbal abuse and post-traumatic stress disorder in hospital nurses. However, there was no significant moderating effect of social support between workplace violence and post-traumatic stress disorder. Conclusion: The experiences of workplace violence influenced post-traumatic stress disorder in nurses and were moderated by resilience. Therefore, hospital administrators need to develop and provide a workplace violence prevention and resilience reinforcement program to reduce post-traumatic stress disorder in nurses. In addition, we suggest further research on the effect of social support in a workplace on the experiences of violence.

  • Disorder of Extreme Stress, Not Otherwise Specified (DESNOS) is the proposed diagnosis that meets the severe, complex, and prolonged psychological sequela of victims with chronic traumatization (e.g., family violence, incest, and childhood sexual or physical abuse). The hallmarks of DESNOS are a multiplicity of symptoms (e.g., somatization, dissociation, and depression), pathological changes in relationships, identity disturbances, and a propensity to experience repeated harm and injury at the hands of oneself and others. DESNOS can be directly assessed by Structured Interview of Disorder of Extreme Stress (SIDES) and Self- Report Inventory of Disorder of Extreme Stress (SIDES-SR). The treatment of DESNOS should be phaseoriented and involve movement back and forth among three basic stages : 1) stabilization ; 2) trauma processing ; 3) reintegration.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the actual status of Internet gaming disorder in university students, the relationship between perceived stress, social support, lifestyle and Internet gaming disorder, and the medium effect of social support in the relationship between perceived stress and Internet gaming disorder. The main results of the survey and analysis of 1,154 university students located in Gyeonggi Province are as follows. First, the prevalence of Internet gaming disorder among university students was 14.0 percent, which is very high. Second, the perceived stress had a positive correlation with the Internet gaming disorder. The more negatively perceived stress events occurred by university students, the higher the degree of internet gaming disorder was. Third, social support had a negative correlation with perceived stress and internet gaming disorder. The higher the support of parents, friends, and others, the lower the perceived stress and the lower the internet gaming disorder. Fourth, social support partially mediated the relationship between perceived stress and Internet gaming disorder. Even though stress was negatively perceived, the degree of internet gaming disorder was low when social support was high. Fifth, among the lifestyle habits of students, the rate of alcoholism was higher in the Internet gaming disorder group than in the non-disorder group. Finally, the results of the study and ways to prevent Internet gaming disorder among university students were discussed.
