  • Solutions of geotechnical engineering problems require predictions of deformation and stresses during various stages of loading. Powerful numerical methods are available to make such predictions even for complicated problems. To get accurate results, realistic stress-strain relationships of soils are dependent on a number of factors such as soil type, density, stress level and stress path. Attempts are continuously being made to develope analytical models for soils incorporating all such factors. Isotropic compression-expansion test and a series of drained conventional triaxial tests with several stress path for Baekma river sand were performed to investigate stress-strain and volume change characteristics of Lade's single work hardening model dependant on the stress path. In order to predicted of stress-strain and volumetric strain behavior were determined the values of parameters for the mode by the computer program based on the regression analysis. Predicted stress-strain behavior of triaxial compression tests and optional stress path tests for increasing confining pressure with parameters obtained conventional triaxial compression tests agreed with several test results but the prediction results for decreasing confining pressure reduced triaxial compression tests make a little difference with test results.

  • This study deals with the stress-strain-strain rate behaviour of overconsolidated clay. Consolidated-drained stress path tests were performed on the stress-time dependent condition. Stress history consists of rotation angle of stress path, overconsolidation ratio, and magnitude of length of recent stress path. Time history includes loading rate of recent and current stress path. Test results show that all influence factors have an increasing strain rate with time, and the strain rate varies with the change of the rotation angle of stress path. With the increase of overconsolidation ratio and loading rate of current stress path, the strain rate also increases. For the stress history, correlation between stress-strain and strain rate is indicated but the time history is not.

  • Overconsolidated clays have a different stress history according to the deposit environment. The stress history is classified into (i) rotation angle of stress path, (ii) overconsolidation ratio, and (iii) magnitude of length of recent stress path. Stress-strain behaviour of overconsolidated clays strongly depends on these stress history. In this study a series of drained stress path tests were carried out. Test results indicated that stress-strain behaviour of overconsolidated clay(focused on strain rate) depends on OCR and length of recent stress path, especially rotation angle.

  • Based on observation emerged from the undrained tests and the anisotropic consolidation tests, an incremental stress-strain theory for rockfill is proposed in a manner similar to that developed ky Cambridge Group for normally consolidated soils; the volumetric strain due to stress increment is the same as the increment due to an undrained component followed by an increment along the constant stress ratio path. The strains in drained tests are predicted from those in the undrained tests and in the anisotropic consolidation tests. An expression for the undrained stress path is derived based on the bilinear relationship between the pore pressure developed and the stress ratio observed during untrained tests. Good agreement is found between the calculated and measured strains. This trend in behaviour would be helpful in establishing a stress.strain model for rockfill using the elasto-plastic behaviour with the concept of plastic potentials and flow rules.

  • A new stress path test method, which is more suitable f3r evaluating settlements of clay deposits, was introduced. This new method is basically based on back pressure equalization concept and makes it possible to estimate deformations corresponding to all points on a specific stress path by only one test. As a result, deformation characteristics of a clay deposit can be predicted by a few tests and the more practical application of stress path method can be realized. In addition, anisotropic deformation behaviors following arbitrary stress paths also can be experimentally measured by this test method. Experimental applicability of the proposed method was confirmed by performing various stress path tests on remolded kaolinite samples and the actual process to evaluate overall deformation characteristics and settlements was also presented.

  • Natural clayey soils or improved grounds are in a overconsolidated conditions due to changes in vertical stress and pore pressures, desiccation, ageing and so on. These grounds show inelastic stress-strain behaviour characteristics within all range of strain except very small strain (${\gamma}$$\_$s/$\leq$10 ̄$^3$∼10 ̄$^4$%) when construction, such as excavations and retaining walls, is performed. Also it strongly depends on loading rate of current stress path and recent stress path. This study carried out drained stress path tests by varying loading rate of current and recent stress path. Test results indicated that stress-strain behaviour of overconsolidated clay depends on loading rate, especially loading rate of current stress path.

In conclusion, the parameters of Lade's model are little influenced by the stress paths. Though yield criterion parameters ( h, ${\alpha}$a) are much influenced by stress level and stress path, the parameters don't have influence on stress-strain behavior.

  • In order to review the utility of Lade's single hardening constitutive model, a series of isotropic compression-expansion tests and consolidated drained triaxial tests including as CTC, TC, RTC, and OSP were performed by Baekma river sand with various of stress path. Parameters required in model were determined using these tests. The accuracy of analysis was reviewed by back analysis of test results used to determine the 11 parameters of soil property through the test of each stress path. Also. for verifying the accuracy of prediction for the stress-strain behavior using failure criterion related 9 parameters with correlational equation and constant and yield criterion related parameters h, ${\alpha}$ and ${\eta}_1$, when stress path is different with each other, it has been obtained in the review result of stress path dependent characteristics of the constitutional model through the analyzing results of CTC, TC, RTC, OSP, and fine silica sand tests.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the liquefaction behaviour and predict deviator stress with matric suction, of unsaturated silty sand. The unsaturated soil tests were conducted using a modified triaxial cell and specimens were prepared using the moisture tamping method. The axis translation technique was used to create the desired matric suctions in the specimen. Undrained triaxial compression tests were carried out at matric suction of 0, 2, 5, 10 and 25 kPa. The specimens were sheared to axial strains of about 20% to obtain steady state conditions. The results showed that liquefaction of silty sand only occurs at matric suction of 0 kPa and 2 kPa. The results also show that at matric suctions of 5, 10 and 25 kPa, the resistance to liquefaction increases. As the suction increases, the undrained effective stress path approached the drained stress path. Also, the predicted and measured maximum deviator stress for unsaturated soils using the effective stress concept showed good agreement as matric suction increases. The deviator stress increase is nonlinear as matric suction increases.

  • Yielding is an important feature of the stress-strain behavior of clays. This study was performed to estabilish the yielding curves and properties for a marine caly from Jangheung. Chonnam Province . A series of tests was done by means of the various stress path tests. Results of the tests are as follows ; 1) The laboratory -determined Ko is very similar to that applied to the Jaky equation. 2) The shape of yielding curve is nealry symmetrical about the p' axis like other natural clays. 3) The critical state parameters, Mc and Me are the same for compression and extension tests which contrasts with the results of the isotropically consolidated soils. 4) The state boundary suface using the critical state paratmers can resresent the normalized yielding curve obtained by various stress path experiments.
