  • This study was designed to identify a more effective method of nursing interview in gathering informations by comparing the two, the structured and unstructured methods. May through October, 1976, 40patients on psychiatric wards of Korea University Hospital and National Mental Hospital, Seoul, were sampled and interviewed on their admission/within one week of admission. Both methods were used simultaneously by different interviewers ; 48 hour interval were kept between the two approaches of interview. Contents of informations gathered were grouped according to the criteria developed by the researcher, frequency, percentile score and the means were scored, and the two methods were compared; the amount of information gathered, number of questions used, time spent and the general response towards the methodologies. Results of the study are summarized as follows ; 1. 1. 5 times as many informations were gathered through the structured interview. (1366 ; 849) 2. 68.32% of informations gathered through the unstructured interview and 42.46% of the structured interview revealed to be overlapping; through structured interview, more unique informations (57.54%) were gathered. 3. The average of 33.25 minutes were consumed for the structured interview while 95, 50 minutes for the unstructured. Much higher time consumption is revealed in the unstructured. 4. Majority of patients showed positive response towards both approaches of interview (90% each), however, interviewers responded to experience of certain degree of tension (stress) in the unstructured method (35%) 5. The average of 0.88 question were used to gather one information in the structured while 1.87questions for the unstructctured were used. 6. The average of 0.97 minutes were consumed to gather one information in the structured while 4.50minutes for the unstructured. 7. The average of 1.11 minutes were consumed for one question for the structured while 2.41 minutes for the unstructured. The results of the study revealed that the structured interview were more effective in gathering informations; a larger quantity of informations were gathered in shorter time. Recommendations for further in investigations are as follows ; 1. Comparative analysis of informations gathered through the two methods by experienced professional nurse- interviewers is recommended. 2. Comparative analysis of the quality of informations is recommended. 3. Comparative analysis of the interviewing process (interactions) in relation to the characteristics of patients'health problems is recommended.

  • The life cycle of new information technologies is getting shorter, and the technologies are becoming more complex and difficult to understand. The need to better understand adoption of object orientation motivates this paper. Adoption of object orientation should certainly be influenced by prior software process technologies, such as the process-oriented structured methods, because object orientation is considered to be a paradigm shift from conventional software process technologies. This study aims to empirically analyze knowledge interference of the structured methods with object orientation. A two factorial quasi-experimental design is set forth. The period of experience using the structured methods and the period of experience using object orientation are selected as two independent variables, and the perceived ease of use is chosen as one dependent variable. Data are gathered from active members of Data Processing Management Association (DPMA), who have experiences in using both the structured methods and object orientation. The final results empirically show that previous experience using the structured methods negatively influences the perception of using object orientation that is one of critical factors to technology adoption. It is suggested here that a future study dealing with the same research topic in other countries will provide new insights about comparative studies.

  • Competencies of entry-level pharmacists are evaluated by multiple-choice questions (MCQ) examination and objective structured clinical examination (OSCE). OSCE helps to evaluate student's communication skills and attitudes, which are difficult to evaluate by the MCQ exam. In Korea, pharmacy OSCE is not implemented; however, the needs of OSCE is growing. This study proposed OSCE exam contents and exam methods that can be implemented in colleges of pharmacy. Further study is needed to develop OSCE scenarios and questions, validate examination questions and evaluation methods by performing a pilot study, and provide feedback on the curriculum and study methods.

  • This study was motivated how it might be possible to validate structured sampling with orthogonal array for optimal design of a pin. The Taguchi method by orthogonal array, one of the structured sampling methods, has much advantage that is row cost and time saving for experiments. But this method has been applied in limited areas especially for mechanical problems. In this study, we experimented whether the structured sampling is useful for applying optimal design of mechanical elements. For the experiment, we first set up a mechanical problem which was related to determining optimal parameters associated a pin's crack occurred inside a hole. We, then, calculated combination of...

  • Node is the semantic unit and a part of structured document. Information retrieval from structured documents offers an opportunity to go subdivided below the document level in search of relevant information, making any element in an structured document a retrievable unit. The node-based document retrieval constitutes several similarity calculating methods and the extended node retrieval method using structure information. Retrieval performance is hardly influenced by the methods for determining document similarity The extended node method outperformed the others as a whole.

  • One of the important research issues in mobile robot is how to detect the 3D environment fast and accurately, and recognize it. Sensing methods of utilizing laser structured light and/or stereo vision are representatively used among a number of methodologies developed to date. However, the methods are still in need of achieving high accuracy and reliability to be used for real world environments. In this paper to implement a new robotic environmental sensing algorithm is presented by combining the information between intensity image and that of laser structured light image. To see how effectively the algorithm applied to real environments, we developed a sensor system that can be mounted on a mobile robot and tested performance for a series of environments.

  • The purpose of this paper is the derivation and development of the new definitions and methods for the new estimation of robustness for the systems having structured uncertainties. This proposition adopts the theoretical analysis of the Lyapunov direct methods, that is, the sign properties of the Lyapunov function derivative integrated along finite intervals of time, in place of the original method of the sign properties of the time derivative of the Lyapunov function itself. This is the new sufficient criteria to relax the stability condition and is used to generate techniques for the robust design of control systems with structured perturbations. The systems considered are assumed to be nominally linear, with time-variant, nonlinear bounded perturbations. This new techniques demonstrate the improvement of robustness bounds from the numerical results.

  • In this paper we compare parameter estimation by Grassmann manifold optimization and sequential candidate set algorithm in a structured principal fitted component (PFC) model. The structured PFC model extends the form of the covariance matrix of a random error to relieve the limits that occur due to too simple form of the matrix. However, unlike other PFC models, structured PFC model does not have a closed form for parameter estimation in dimension reduction which signals the need of numerical computation. The numerical computation can be done through Grassmann manifold optimization and sequential candidate set algorithm. We conducted numerical studies to compare the two methods by computing the results of sequential dimension testing and trace correlation values where we can compare the performance in determining dimension and estimating the basis. We could conclude that Grassmann manifold optimization outperforms sequential candidate set algorithm in dimension determination, while sequential candidate set algorithm is better in basis estimation when conducting dimension reduction. We also applied the methods in real data which derived the same result.

  • This study focused on the improvement of field investigation process of digital mapping by location-based image data and structured digital map. We analyzed previous methods to find the parts to be improved and suggested new methods. Main concepts of new methods are conducting investigation work indoor and linked the work with map editing for carrying out both work simultaneously by using location-based image data and structured digital map. Pilot project were carried out to compare suggested new methods with previous methods and the applicability were analyzed.

  • This paper proposes the methods to construct the tree-structured database and analyze the distribution system network. In order to cope with an extensive amount of data and the frequent breaker switching operations in distribution systems, the database for system configuration is constructed using binary trees. Once the tree-structured database has been built, the system tracing of distribution network can be rapidly performed. This remarkably enhances the efficiency of data search and easily adapts to system changes due to switching operations. The computation method of fast power flow using tree search strategies is presented. The methods in the paper may be available in the field of distribution system operation.
