  • Librarians, who work for University libraries in Korea experience a lot of confusion and difficulties because of rapidly-changing technological conditions and under-developed understanding of the University Libraries' full potential on the part of the users. I present the concept of 'Subject Services' as an approach which librarians could use to overcome these difficulties in their own way. The 'Subject Services' refers to the 'subjectized' collection development and reference services, which can more specifically address the users' needs. To make this idea more concrete, I selected Pusan National University Library as the case of my qualitative research. And I made use of various research techniques such as 'participant observation' and 'ethnographic interview'. After looking into the case library in depth, I found that the concept of 'Subject Specialist'. a person who has double master's degrees including that of library and information science, is more suitable to the University Libraries in Korea at the present developmental stage. At the end of this article, propose that the development of Core Collections, the improvement of subject-oriented reference services and the continuing education of librarians should be emphasized.

  • Special libraries have purchased materials in only one or two specific subject areas which their mother institutions are concerned. Therefore, special libraries need to develop a well-defined collection development policy for themselves. Special libraries purchase items that are frequently used by their users, and provide access to low-use titles through document delivery services. It is a reasonable solution that the library should Join the cooperative special libraries' association which provides document delivery services in Korea. It is because special libraries' association has achieved document delivery service successfully, when compared with the general(non-special) libraries association. It is expected that special libraries' association can do cooperative acquisition better than other groups.

It traces users' perceptions regarding subject access highlighting problems in the retrieval of Bengali documents by subject. This study has designed to assess users' attitudes towards the retrievals of Bengali documents in OPAC through subject headings. For a collection of data, a representative sample has drawn from a large and heterogeneous population consisting of users in university libraries of West Bengal using a stratified sampling technique. Subsequently, under each of the universities, users' community was stratified into students, research scholars, and faculty members. Under each stratum, the sample selected on a random basis. The users met personally to collect relevant data, while they came to the library and went on to search OPAC. A structured schedule, prepared for the purpose, was presented before library users and consequently, interviews and interpretations recorded systematically. In this manner, several factors have identified concerning subject searching and retrieval performance for Bengali documents. This study explores the access using subject headings in multilingual information retrieval systems. Moreover, the suitability of subject headings for retrieval of Bengali resources has ascertained from the users' point of view. The findings demand standard principles and rules for the construction of Bengali subject headings to maintain uniformity and consistency.

  • The present study investigates domestic and foreign cases of library specialization, and specialization policies, areas, and effects in order to delineate future directions for research on the subject. The results of the study indicated that library specialization policies have been implemented in Korea and other countries. In Korea, a short-term policy was implemented in 1998, designating 13 special libraries, nine of which are currently in operation. Regarding types and directions of specialization, specialization of collections was found in many cases. Regional representative libraries were also found to have designated specific subjects they focus individually in terms of collections and services while providing services in subject areas. The future directions include research in qualifications and competence of professionals employed in special libraries, and in user satisfaction and needs to inform libraries' efforts for specialization.
